Windows 10 verdict on an old computer running X2.....
I have three computers:
A really nice Toshiba laptop (see signature) with X2 that I use as my main recording machine that is still running Windows 7 64-bit, a cheaper Asus laptop running Windows 8.1 and running X2 and a 2007 HP desktop. I haven't gotten around to upgrading the laptops yet, but I wanted to see what would happen if I tried to put W10 on the 2007 desktop. Here's the specs:
4 gigs of ram
AMD Athlon 64x2 dual core processor 4400+ 2.30GHz
Windows 10 32-bit upgraded from Windows 7 32-bit that had been upgraded from Vista (all "Home" editions)
So, as you can tell, not quite the fastest or greatest specs, but it was my first "real" recording computer and now I just use it to put ideas down and to surf the internet and do "regular" stuff. I don't mix on it or do anything serious except capturing ideas. So, anyway.....
I honestly thought that W10 wasn't even going to install on this computer because I have an nvidia graphics card that is supposedly not compatible with Windows 10. To my surprise, it worked. Awesome. It took a little over an hour for the process to complete, but it LOOKS really nice and it's very comparable to Windows 7 as far as stability and functionality.
So, of course I had to try my music stuff. The first thing I did was fire up Dimension Pro and my M-Audio keystation controller. I just kind of jammed around on a bunch of patches.... grand pianos, strings, organs, layers, splits, etc. Latency was incredible (in a good way). Actually much better than Windows 7, at least on my machine. I might be imagining this, but the piano patches sounded more clear.... I don't know why..... is this even possible?
Next was X2. Fired up X2, added an audio track with Guitar Rig 5, a MIDI track with Session Drummer 3 and a MIDI track with Dimension pro. Again, latency was perfect. Very clear tone, no clicks, pops, crackles, etc. I'm using an M-audio C-600 as my interface.
Playback was fantastic. No stuttering, none of the sounds mentioned above....no crashing. Very cool. Remember, this is on a desktop made in 2007 and running the latest version of Windows that just came out like a week ago. This had every reason to fail and I expected it to. Pleasantly surprised with both W10 and Sonar.
