Mastering house?

Not sure where to post this so this seems as good a place as any. I have a track I'd like to send out for professional mastering.

Do any of you have someone you use, and what types of rates can I expect?

thanks!

Rates are all over the map as "mastering" studios have been popping up like weeds over the last several years.  There are fairly reputable guys listed in Tape Op that will do it for as little as $30 per song...but I'm always skeptical that I could do just about as well with the tools I have.  Really good shops/engineers cost dough.  I've heard great things about "Yes, Master" in Nashville.  And I've always dreamed of having Greg Calbi master my stuff at Sterling Sound in NYC.  Yea, like that's gonna happen;-)

Just curious, why only this track?

all depends on the volume of work, and how many tracks. IF I had the budget,  the person I would use lives in Australia these days.. but thanks to the net thats not a biggy.

a few of the old london places offer an online sevice these days.

Yep, Danny has done some mastering for me in the past, he's good, great attention to detail.

Guys thanks! I actually PMd Danny about the time I posted this and got an thorough, thoughtful response (as you would expect!) I'm going to have him do it.

Ol' Pal - I <finally> have a track that I think is worthy of having someone master. Feels really good! :)

I have so many plugins to use for mastering, but so little time for my creative endeavor. I feel that someone like Danny can not only do a great job, but teach me what it takes to create a solid mix to send to an ME. I'll also have a point of reference to what a good master should sound like as I attempt to learn that art as well.

I would love to have Danny do something for me someday. I've got to get better at other things first though. I'm afraid he would probably want to re-record and mix it first! Hahaha!

Anyone have any experience with the new mastering support at CD Baby? I've bought CDs from them for years and really like their "go to market" strategy, from the original owner and what he did and is doing for independent musicians, to the current owners. Enquiring minds...

Just saw this thread...you guys are awesome! Thank you so much for the plugs and compliments....much appreciated brothers! :) And thanks smallstonefan for getting a hold of me. :)

Clint: Hahaha...it's rare I ever make anyone do that. However, I HAVE recommended they re-record instruments that are just "bad seeds". I also turn down quite a bit of work because honestly....some of it DOES need to be remixed or re-recorded. I will NEVER be one of those guys that just takes on a project that can't be improved upon. Seriously....how do these guys that do that sleep at night? Granted, I can make a small improvement on something that is really bad....but I'd rather do the honest thing and tell someone "mastering will not make this as good as a remix with good instrumentation will". From what I've heard from you, you'd be easy to work with man.

That said, unless you are going to release something and charge people money, you should be able to get away with little "m" mastering for your stuff on your own. It's nice to have things sounding as great as they can as well as having the extra set of ears the ME can give you, but you really don't need that unless you're going to put something into production. The extra set of ears can bail you out because you're too close to the material, ya know? It's huge in my opinion. But for demo purposes or sharing with friends, you should be fine doing things yourself. :) But hey, if you ever need anything.... :)

I'm working with Danny right now and he's helped me prep my mix to a state that I would NEVER have gotten to on my own. I'm learning so much AND my song is sounding amazing (to me). Danny is the real deal and a class act. :)

I'll let you all know when the song is up in the songs section - it's close. I've been <encouraged> (cough cough) to re-record the bass line using a real bass instead of a synth. :) Once that's laid down, I think I'll be done!

To anyone thinking of using Danny - you should try it once. you won't regret it!

Hi,

I would expect at least half of the folks here capable of mastering and then some!

Hi,

Anyone is capable....but not many do it right. Guaranteed if people posting tunes posted mix and then their master that they did, you'll like quite a few  mixes better than their masters unless they have an understanding on how to master. I wish I could post all the client mixes I get over-using ozone or t-raxx. They were closer to a good product without that stuff. But hey, whatever works best.

...

Actually, you were missing the wall hangers that had the finest selection of whips since that leather shop on Wilshire (was it Wilson something or other?), and a few chains ... and maybe a few different types of rope.

Also missing a drain in the middle of the floor, because the only way to clean it all up afterwards is to turn on the garden hose and water it all down ... !!! Ohhh ... also missing a few passages on the wall, from MGL's "The Monk".

That should do the trick. Not sure that a few Dennis Wheatley quotes would be as good, otherwise! too artsy and weird for this board, I'm sure! Nobody likes that kind of music! (I think I've seen too many movies in my life!)
