Acronis Backup
I have about 14 backups saved on my internal HD (need to put it on my External HD) ever since I started using Acronis 13 (summer of 2014). Should I only keep the latest 3 (just a random guess) and delete the rest or what's the best way to do this?

Hi Mesh! I make a Full system image weekly but I only save the last 3 so, at any time I will have the last 4 images available. I really would not want to have to go back and re-install all the software and updates for a period greater than that. I also keep a backup log (.txt) that lists everything I have installed, the date, and the Image name it would be on. I do however keep the original Clean system image that Jim made before he shipped my machine. Just my way of doing things. Kind regards, Rick

Hi Rick, That's true, no point in keeping an outdated backup...... I've setup Acronis to do a backup on the 1st of every month (of course, if I just recorded more often, I would be doing the weekly thing ). That's a good idea to keep a backup log of everything installed (at least my plugins and software)......will also start doing that. Good info here Rick.....Thanks!!

Incremental. Haven't tried differential yet.....(don't really know much about it either).

Good to know......I still haven't changed anything yet. Is it better to do a FULL rather than incremental.......and just keep the last 3-4 backups? What are the good/bad to look out for?

it's all relative to what you want. incrementals will need a full backup to be restored, but they save more space on your hard drive that way. 3 full backups will take up a lot more room than 1 full and 10 incrementals (normally).

I have plenty of space on my 3TB HD, so that's not a problem in doing a full backup. In a worst case scenario, is this the preferred method?

Incremental backups are basically quicker than full backups. If you want to delete backups try and do it through the Acronis user interface (less agro later).

I agree, don't just dump incremental backups, it might be OK, but there's less chance of a problem if you do it through the Acronis interface.

No worries at all Rick.....no harm, no foul. Before jumping into anything, I always check here with you guys as well research it online so I don't accidentally blow up my PC. I'm also inclined to do the full backup and will start that this weekend. Thanks everyone for the input.

Restoring from incremental backups can be a real PITA. If one image has a problem you will hate life. Been there, done that. With cheap storage, there is no benefit to having 10 incremental backups (except for time). I have backed up and restored many images over the years. I've learned to use only full images. I have one full image of my machine that is a factory default, before any software was installed. I then keep the latest 3 full images. Just my OCD $.02

Never had an issue myself with incrementals. Maybe a decade ago when the software wasn't that good. I find if a backup takes too long I tend to do less backups.

Mesh, restoring a full image is usually a piece of cake (no pun intended). Slap a new HD in the box and a few clicks. The best feature, IMHO, of full images is having the ability to restore an image to a completely new computer if your motherboard dies. I suppose you could do that with incrementals, but not as smooth. Acronis and Ghost have a feature that allows the image to be restored to different hardware. It then resets Windows HAL into setup mode to load the new drivers. Very sweet. You do have an Acronis boot disk don't you? I don't use the Acronis application or service. When I want an image, I boot to the CD and create the image without Windows loading. PM me if you need anymore advice.

Only time I would do that is when I have no choice. Would not do that when moving machines. Def a good facility though and only present in newer versions. Ghost is out of support from Windows 8 and does not work. Cheers.

I have moved servers, workstations, and DAWs. Two to three hours sure beats the crap out of 2-3 days worth of installs. If you have a stable system, there is no need to re-install everything. Especially when moving a complex system, there is always the risk of missing something. A driver, utility, tweak, etc. If you have a good clean stable system, just move it. On the other hand, if your system is a mess, installs/uninstalls/demos/crashes/malware/flakey drivers, then by all means start fresh.

Doc A, Yes Ghost 2.5 had some hardware limitations. Mostly due to the WinPE version though. If you use a boot disk, OS version is not an issue. Ghost 3.0 works with 7,8, and 8.1. If you use the WinPE5 AIK you should be able to go to Win 10!
