Behavior when cloning soft synth track

I am using SONAR artist version.  I am by no means an expert on DAW software but the behavior I am observing when cloning a track is unexpected and for what I am doing, inconvenient.  The volume, mute, solo values of the cloned tracked are all linked to the original track ("Link to Original Clips(s)" is unselected).

DETAILS:
I start by creating a "NORMAL" project.  I created a track by right clicking in the track view, selecting "insert from track template" -> "soft synth track template" -> TTS-1 piano (or lush strings).  I record a measure or two from my keyboard and then I right click on the newly created track and click "clone track".  I unselect everything but "Clone Events" ("Link to Original Clips(s)" is unselected), and click ok.

I expected I would get a single soft synth track that was identical (maybe with a (1) after the name or something like windows does if you copy a folder).  Instead, I get 2 additional tracks, an audio I think, and a soft synth with the copied notes in it.  Additionally, the created soft synth track's volume, mute, and solo (and maybe more, I dunno) features are all linked to the original clips.  For example, if I try to lower the volume of the created track, it also lowers the volume of the original track.

I've run into this twice now.  Once when I was to create a backup copy of a track to play with changing one of them, and next when I was trying to have 2 TTS-1 instruments play the same line (I wanted different volumes on the different instruments).  I can instead create a new synth track and copy the note/clip data over but the clone track behavior seemed strange enough to me I figured I'd ask about it.

This is nothing new. Best to avoid cloning instrument tracks. If you feel the need to clone instead of copying the MIDI data, split the instrument track, then clone the MIDI track.
