Focusrite Scarlet 2i4 causing Sonar 7 crash....
I thought this was a corrupted sequence but I now know it's the new Scarlet 2i4 crashing the system I've deleted the old ASIO divers and downloaded the current from website and installed. Tried every USB port...same result Optimised the PC system for audio according to Focusrite website. Sequences play all ok..but when pressing STOP button the PC crashes EVERY TIME ! I bought an AKai EIE which gave me no end of problems...imagine how I feel buying the replacement Scarlet only for it to be worse...? I'm using a brand new audio custom made PC (£500) with windows 7 and Sonar 7 producer. I wish I had my old EMU card system back..at least it worked. ( I am betting it's the drivers causing this .......is there a definitive way to install the drivers correctly ?)

Standard advise to follow first: Do all full uninstall of the Focusrite drivers. Reboot Install them again: http://us.focusrite.com/usb-audio-interfaces/scarlett-2i4/downloads Make sure your Windows update maintenance is totally up to date. Run intel driver update to detect if you need up to date chipset drivers: http://www.intel.com/p/en_US/support/detect See if there is a motherboard BIOS update from your PC manufacturer. Temporary disable virus scanner... If no cure, please check the Windows event viewer for crash messages, paste them here. ... and consider updating Sonar! Thanks..

Definitely confirm that the BIOS and Intel chipset drivers are up to date (Though the DAW builder should have done that for you). Are you sure the interface is plugged into a USB 2 port -- and not USB 3? The USB3 ports are not always backwards compatible.

Thanks for all your help...
I'm pretty well dissolutioned with PC recording ...you buy stuff in good faith after reading all their super adds and doing research.... and then get nothing but grief grief grief ....this has happened to me times many....and to thousands of others no doubt.
Should companies be allowed to sell their stuff that might/might not work on an if and a promise ?
I cannot believe I have to now try to super refine my brand new dedicated music PC to try to get this thing working...!
I really believe it's time something was done about all this gear that's being sold that is supposed to work but invariably doesn't...or at least only does after hours and hours of problem solving.
I'll certainly try all the suggestions to try to get the thing stable...but really I want my money back and just want something that's reliable and works...

Yes..thanks...I've tried ALL USB ports ..everyone with the same resultant crash.
I've taken the advice above and deleted /reloaded drivers then plugged in the Ai4 ...it now seems to be more stable ....it's not crashing every time I press STOP ...I'm sure it's the drivers giving the problems or how their loaded etc I'll use it for a while and see how many times it crashes... Thanks again for help

Edit I notice you posted while I was writing this Yet I'm still gonna leave this as I wrote it … Well it is apparent that you seem to be getting some pretty decent advice here from the posters that have tried to help you so far … depending on who you ask , it may go downhill pretty fast from this point on w me trying to help you out I have the 2i4 myself , at first it was a little problematic for me…( this was about a year and a half ago ) the 2i4 seemed OK in SONAR but in another program I liked to use I was getting major buffer overloads…. to give you an idea of what type of problems I was having on my lap top …( W 8 64 bit ) running ASIO the "then current driver " did not have a section that came up in the control panel where I could access my sound card and set my buffers and sample rate to taste … I had to do it inside of SONAR …( I thought that was a little weird ) I got major system buffer overloads regardless of using buffer sizes 4 times my preferred compromise setting my compromise setting is 512 in ASIO …. I wound up contacting tech support and did a back and forth correspondence with the tech that was assigned to help me out … Having had a good experience w the tech may I suggest to you that it may be a good thing for you to consider …open up a support correspondence w Focusrite …. What eventually happened was the tech sent me a link to a beta driver for W 8 . since then everything has been working fine ever since …my device shows up in the control panel , and it runs very good another thing to consider , since your other sound card had extra USB ports for all you other peripherals ….. Did you get used to having all of those extra ports and decide to try to run you 2i4 connected to a hub ? The 2i4 has to have it's own USB hub I found this one for myself ….. I have a feeling that the 2i4 may draw a lot more USB resources than some other USB sound cards … Somebody I know want's to give me an XP lap top that is collecting dust ….(once he finds the charger ) I plan on trying out Linux on this lappy…I have no experience w that OS so I feel it may be a good machine and place to start . I did a little research on compatible sound cards for that OS …. my other USB sound card was listed as compatible on The Wiki ….when I looked up the 2i4 , it was listed as compatible in that OS , but it stated plainly that in that it had to be powered by and externally powered USB hub before going into the computer … that little tidbit / info is where I got the impression that the 2i4 may need to draw a little more than some cards good luck to you I hope you get it sorted out , Kenny

+1 I think if you just assume this to be the case with every USB interface and get a PCI/PCI-e USB2 add-on card, your life will likely become a lot simpler. I've used a PCI-e USB2 add-on card with all 3 of the USB interfaces I've had, and they've run solidly since day one.

Thanks for this info...so far the system is stable...so far ....I unchecked the "save power" boxes on the USB ports in systems ..but as I say all the USB ports gave same results..crashes..but now I've loaded the drivers in sequence with box connection things have improved but not sure if there solved. So I'm really sure it's a driver problem.

No....despite observing all the above info and Focusrite instructions, the system still crashes almost every time I hit the STOP button. It seems I have nothing left to try..apart from maybe getting my money back.

Help me understand something here , When you say " Focusrite instructions " are you talking about what they have on the web page and their videos , or are you talking about having opened up a support ticket w Focusrite and going through the one on one help and instructions they may have offered to you to help fix the problems you are having ? Hey , after all that , if your actually "went there" and your not happy w the 2i4 I can certainly under stand that you may have to do what you have to do … Kenny

Sorry I should have been more precise.
I'm referring to the Focusrite web page that has the "set up your PC for optimum audio" plus all the other tips they recommend. But just now I've opened a case with Focusrite ...I've sent them all my details so am now waiting for a reply.
But again, I'm sure this is all to do with drivers...maybe my particular PC is simply unfriendly towards them ?
I'll keep posting until there's a conclusion one way or the other.

I noticed you mentioned Akai EIE. Do you have ASIO4ALL installed? It is worth mentioning that should be uninstalled (simply "not running" doesn't work in most cases).

I'm not a faan of USB powered interfaces. I'd go trade it in for one with a power supply as an option. ANd a big plus to never having asio4all in your system if you have real drivers.. but that would not cause a crash.. And You should really try a demo or buy for $30 a newer version of Sonar. Sonar 7 is very old and not going to be very stable on a newer system.
