First Song Using Sonar Platinum "World That I Know" Cover

This is a cover version of the 1995 Collective Soul song "The World That I Know".

This is my first venture into Sonar Platinum.
It is also my first extensive use of automation and my first attempt at blending snares in Toontrack Superior Drummer via the X-Drum.

I tried to stay true to the original but due to instrumentation I had to pan a little differently than they did.

Enjoy!

Cool mix, Mark! As usual!

Was the bass panned a little left? What acoustic guitar are you using, is it vst? Just wondering . . .

Towards the very end, you have an open hi hat poking through, like a snake coming out of the tall grass and hissing at you, then retracting its head. Yes, that is an odd analogy. I think you might tuck him back a little?

I was not familiar with this song, and I'm sure you are doing it justice here.

cheers,
-Tom

Re: First Song Using Sonar Platinum "World That I Know" Cover 2015/08/25 13:28:10 (permalink)
Actually the band is Collective Soul.
I also forgot to mention that I mastered it differently too...some of the cymbals and percussion came out a little hot.

The left guitar is a 12 string from MusicLab's Real Guitar and the right is a Nylon guitar from the same software. I recorded them with different velocities to get the strumming effect that is on the record but I did not stay true to the original fret inversions...

The bass is mono straight down the middle but there is a cello part that is panned off center.

I have noticed that Sonar does some weird things during mixdown in songs that have large amounts of instrumentation. I've had to redo a few because of it, but that was in X3.

I'm going to go find that snake and cuts it's head off!

Thanks for listening guys!

Mark

Mark, maybe start up around 3:20, I think it's on the four . . .

We should have a "90's cover" project contest. Quite a few great tunes, surrounded by so much dreck.

nice job,

Mark,
I'm not familiar with this song, but its a very good one.

I like your version quite a bit. Your vocal is outstanding and the arrangement has an expansive quality that highlights the lyrics well. Good dynamics with surges at the right moments.

Well done,

Thanks everyone...been tied up the past few days...gave it another listen and determined that it is a stray choked cymbal hit note. I will remove it...like a cymbolic snapping turtle!
Thanks for the input...that's what I get for not checking the final mix with headphones...

Not familiar with the original. Really great sounding mix. Vocals are top notch as is the mix. I just upgraded to Platinum too. Not sure what X-drum is or what you did to the snare here but that is one great sounding drum kit.

X-Drum is a feature in Toontrack's Superior Drummer 2.0...it let's you add more sounds to the standard kits you would load. From what I've read many snare drums on hit records are mixtures of several sounds. I read that some producers will blend in a clap sound to add a snap to snare drums. On this song I added a full sounding deep snare to the standard snare in the kit I normally use. It was pretty close to Collective Soul's snare. It is definitely something I need to explore more....

Mark, really enjoyed listening to this, I'm also unfamiliar with this song, but there were moments when I thought I had heard it before, but I guess it's a song from 20 years ago now. Extremely well recorded, balanced, and as others have stated the vocals are spot on. I also use Music Lab Real Guitar on some of my tracks, and I wasn't sure if this was a VST synth guitar or not ? . . . so well mixed and programmed there.

I use Musician Real Guitar on almost every song since I don't own an acoustic. RG sits really well in most mixes with very little EQ required. I also use Indigenous Acoustic Guitar to get some variety. (Great for Acoustic guitar solos BTW)
I learned on the Music lab forum that the secret to realistic sounds on their products is to use lower velocity. Their philosophy is that it is more based on feel than it is loudness.
I usually average about 65 or 70 in velocity and the raise the harder strums for an accent. Sometimes lower in the 40s for quicker strums.
By using two instances of RG I pan them wide and alternate the velocities to simulate an auto pan effect. To me it sounds better than using an effect to achieve that with one guitar...

Yup, I know this one...    nice cover!    Very well done IMO.     About the only thing I sorta wanted to hear was maybe a bit more of the doubled vocal effect on the chorus for more variation from the verses.  Otherwise the vocals sound really good - I like your voice.    All of the instrumentation sounds good too!

Oh yeah, I remember this one :)

Call me crazy, but there's something about your voice that makes me think Peter Gabriel. Great performance. Sounds good!

If I had one bit of feedback, it's that I wanted to hear a bit more fullness from the electric during the chorus. Maybe double-track it? I think letting the strings dominate is the right idea, but I think that might actually be easier to accomplish with a stereo guitar track.

That notwithstanding, great job.

Sounds really good Mark!  Your vocals are excellent, and the production work is top notch.  One thing I did notice is the bass seems a bit too staccato, while the original bass notes were more legato.  Anyway, great job!

I glad some people remember Collective Soul! I remember this being a pretty big hit when it came out! I thought that maybe I just imagined it...

Thanks for the mix suggestions...I wrestled with all those things you guys mentioned...doubling and stereo-ing  the guitars, staccato bass...and fattening up the chorus vocals.

The original mix was much more separated and very "thick"...I couldn't replicate that with any techniques..

There are also a lot of instruments playing at once through out most of the tune plus it is building in volume...

As for the Peter Gabriel (MESAYRE) the original singer from Collective Soul actually sounds a lot like PG. I don't have that throaty bottom end but it's a nice compliment!

Thanks for all your suggestions and help...
