Auto-Punch Question

Good morning all, first post here, new to Sonar but not new to DAWs.  Quick question, and I'm sure I'm not doing something quite right.  I have recorded several takes of a vocal in Comping mode with no issues, everything is behaving as expected.    However there is one phrase I wanted to re-do so I activated auto-punch for that phrase only.  It records just fine but along with the new material I'm also hearing the previous take which is a bit distracting.  I have input echo=on.  Is this normal behavior for Sonar?  Should I use another recording mode for auto-punch?

I'm using Sonar Professional Hopkinton update.  Windows 7, I7 3.2G, 16GB RAM, 500GB SSD and 500GB standard hard drive.

Any ideas or suggestions?

Thanks - Mike

If you click on "Take Lanes" and look for the clip that's playing and hit 'K' to mute it, will that work?

Also, I usually don't have "Take Lanes" expanded when I record.. keeping it expanded (for no specific reason) sometimes has caused issue for me.

There are several recording modes available in preferences... sound on sound or overlay... something like that. Try the different choices. One of them will mute prerecorded sound once you reach the punch region and record becomes enabled.

I think you can also tweak this from the control bar, but I'm not at my computer.

If you use layers to mute the prior takes, you will not be able to entrain to the previous takes before record gets enabled at the punch point because it will be muted.

I make some videos. This one shows how to do a physical loopback on the RME UCX to get many more equalizer nodes.

Thanks for the quick reply.  I suppose it would work to manually mute the take lane but I was under the impression that being in Comping mode I would not hear any previous material.  I typically don't open the take lanes until I'm ready to start comping.  Thanks - Mike

Thanks Gswitz, yes, that's the problem with muting the entire lane.  I could also mute just the section to be punched and thereby hear everything up to and after the punch.  I think Overwrite mode will possibly work, although I haven't tried it yet.  I was hoping not to have to switch recording modes.  Like I stated in my original post, Comping mode works just fine until I go into Auto Punch mode, then I'm hearing the latest take along with the new material.  I just didn't understand why.

I wonder if I remember totally wrong, but (using 8.5) I remotely recall seeing something like "Mute previous take" in the Options-dialog (Preferencies in newer versions) or somewhere. I've never experienced this as 8.5 doesn't have comping mode (or does it :o/?).

There is an option for muting previous takes in auto punch mode, however as far as I can tell it doesn't just silence the previous takes, it applies an actual "mute" to the previous take which requires you to manually "un-mute" if you want to hear it later.  I suppose it's not a huge deal, there are plenty of workarounds, it's just not the behavior I expected and was wondering if there was something I was overlooking.

    Thanks all!
