Windows 10 Crash

Well, searching reveals I may be the only one having Windows 10 totally crash when trying to use Sonar Platinum (latest update)(Same for the Gloucester, before this).

My system:
OS Name Microsoft Windows 10 Enterprise x64  (installed on a clean hard drive, not an update to anything)
Version 10.0.10240 Build 10240
i7-2600 CPU @ 3.40GHz, 3401 Mhz, 4 Core(s), 8 Logical Processor(s)
Memory (RAM) 16.0 GB
Creative X-Fi feeding into M-Audio Delta 1010LT
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560

Everything else works fine: Sound Forge, Visual Studio, Vegas Pro.

Platinum starts, but if I try to do ANYthing (start a new project, open an existing, even just load a MIDI file), I get the swirly Wait icon and then the system crashes with a DPC_WATCHDOG_VIOLATION and it reboots.  Half the time doing a checkdisk of all the drives.  The last time with beaucoup errors on the disk containing Sonar.

Any ideas?  I doubt anyone wants to see the 1GB memory crash dump, but I have it.

There are NO errors in any of the Event logs for the time it crashes.  Is there anyplace else I can look?

I would get rid of the CL X Fi if it is in any way a component of your computer.

Your system sounds a bit unique. If you can get Sonar loaded, then you should get into the preferences to see how your components are configured. Sonar should also be producing a crash log that could be sent to tech support. My last advice would be to have the latest nvidia drivers installed with Win 10.

The tech support folks are really good. I would contact them because they will know what the issues are. On the forums you will get lots of suggestions, some times too many.

Welcome aboard!

Regards, John

Hi. I would as John suggested disable your CL X Fi. Which drivers do you use? If you use ASIO4ALL, just uninstall completely. I do not know if the M-Audio 1010lt has drivers for win 10, but you could check on M-Audio's website.
Best of luck.

I would, if I could find something else that would use SoundFonts.  I've never managed to get any of the VSTs players to work properly.  :/  Any one have a step-by-step for one of them?

Even so, Platinum on Win7 works fine with the X-Fi, and the X-Fi doesn't cause any problems with Sound Forge or the rest of the system on W10.  I hate problems like this.

I'll play around with it and see what happens.

Thanks.

DPC_WATCHDOG_VIOLATION is most likely drivers. Please go to the Windows Event Viewer and see if you can paste the full error message here.

You could use sfz in SONAR to play SoundFonts. I would still disable you soundcard, and use the 1010lt AI with win 7 ASIO drivers (as Tom mentioned earlier). And if you have ASIO4ALL, uninstall (for good)! If you want to make the best of your SONAR experience, use an Audio Interface (since you have it), that has ASIO drivers, and is made for audio production. The Creative X-F is made for gaming and playback, not for audio production.

Best of luck.

That's the problem: NO errors in any of the logs, no mini dump from Sonar, and if I try to force one through the Task Manager, I can't...it's locked up, too.  :(

Some driver is running into an issue - most likely power management. Definitely make sure that you are running the latest NVidia drivers for your graphics card. They have released at least 2 updates. Also for your audio interface.

If you still have the error after that some info on the web says to try disabling "fast startup" in control panel | Hardware and sound | power options | choose what the power buttons do. You may have to click "change settings that are currently unavailable"

Not a problem, that's telling us it's drivers all over...

Just update your drivers and firmware everywhere. Display, audio interface, etc. You could even try updating your motherboard chipset and BIOS.

One of these will probably fix it.

Well it's a really good way to seperate and route your windows sounds for instance (e.g. YouTube). It's nice to have a dedicated audio interface for your DAWs and other recording software so it does not get in the way. I do it myself, I own a saffire Pro 40 and a NI Z1.

To all:  Removed the X-Fi drivers and disabled the card  (have to leave it in place for when I boot into another OS0.

That was the problem.  All better now.  Thanks for the help!  :D

Now the only problem I have is I can't find the "Create Perfect Mix & Master" button.  Sigh.  I guess I'll have to do all that stuff by hand.

hay...hope all is moving along?.
Just a thought.

Nvidia control pannel (when I right click on my desktop, and select Nvidia control ...And select audio, I can disable the HDMI audio.

Wonder if this helps ponder the try and see method?
