They got it!

https://reverb.com/blog/breaking-gibson-to-revert-prices-and-specs-on-2016-models?_aid=fb

There might be some hope after all.

I've noticed a growing trend of people around me moving to ESP's twist on classic designs for new guitars.

I'm not particularly surprised at the abandonment of the newfangled features. It's basically the 80's all over, when Fender and Gibson tried new things only to find that the primary appeal they had for most people was tradition.

Gibson is probably better off either using one of their other brands or creating a new brand for anything that deviates too much from traditional designs.

In order, then, to discover the limit of deepest tones, it is necessary not only to produce very violent agitations in the air but to give these the form of simple pendular vibrations. - Hermann von Helmholtz, predicting the role of the electric bassist in 1877.

i've been actively moving away from the Gibson brand, and the Fender Brand,
since 1979.

and there is no reason for me to change that modus operendi now.

spend your money wisely.

Yup. When I was in the market for my Gibson Les Paul, I was after tradition, not innovation. I'm not such a purist that I would have tried to score a vintage instruments, but I definitely didn't want anything 2015, especially considering how much they were asking for those.

I'm happy with my 2012 (IIRC) white LP Studio.

....... the primary appeal they had for most people was tradition.

Which in itself is strange. If you ask guitar players what their biggest fears are, one of the answers would be:
  • I'm in a middle of a song, I just played my solo and now my guitar is out of tune
But the guitar players don't like the automatic tuning systems. So there must be a design fault.
If you'd design a guitar that looks traditional but has  invisible automatic tuners hidden in the stop tail piece or something like that, guitar players would complain less.

Or find something else to complain about!
(Heck, if we were low maintenance, we'd play bass right?  )

My LP has a couple cosmetic flaws - but then again, I had a discount on it. As for the rest, I think it's a great guitar. I check out other instruments quite regularly, but I prefer my little Studio. Best neck I've played.

Got lucky, I guess.

I still remember trying about two dozen LP Standards, Classics and Customs at a Guitar Center and they were all wildly different.  Only two seemed to be completely free of some minor, and easily noticeable, deficiency like sharp fret edges, neck issues, loose jacks, wobbly knobs, etc.  Very disappointed considering they were all going for around $2,000+.  DEFINITELY don't order one without being able to try it first!

Course, that means that before too long you'll be able to pick up a 2015 for a drastically reduced rate on eBay and such. So, there's that.

Crap on sale is still crap. I think a lot of the QA issues would improve if retailers sent back stuff that was sub par. One store I deal with goes to the warehouse and hand picks the stuff for their store. If people keep buying sub par gear and do nothing more than complain to their friends, they deserve it.

I am glad to hear they are listening...finally. To me, this was a little like the New Coke experiment, years ago. I hope they revert back to the old neck size as well. The wider neck felt extremely uncomfortable.

It's kinda funny to me as I had a bet with one of my best buds (who is a killer diller player) that all these new features...especially the moto-tuners) wouldn't last more than a year or two at best.  He said Henry is too stubborn to go back on a decision that quick.  He now owes me a bottle of wine.  Tee hee.  Thanks Henry!

Your buddy has a short memory Ol' Pal. Remember the Firebird X and the robot guitars? Gibson has a lo9ng history of making at least one of everything. My buddy has a collection of Gibson's and some of them have never really been seen by the general public and are assumed to be one-off's or employee built.

interesting thing about the L6, tho, is that it was designed by Bill Lawrence (whose pickups i use, and suggest everyone try)....

The L6-S was the first cooperation between Bill Lawrence and Gibson. It was designed in 1972 and first released in 1973.[1] The idea was to make a "multi-sound system" under a very tight budget.
The popularity of the L6-S gradually dropped after 1974, despite high profile endorsements from the likes of Al Di Meola and Carlos SantanaPat MartinoJohn McLaughlinKeith RichardsPaul Stanley and Mike Oldfield also used the model during this period. All models were dropped from price lists in 1979. The L6-S Custom remained in the catalog in 1980 and was still being made in the Nashville plant. The L6-S is now generally considered to be the most underrated of all the Gibson solid bodied guitars.

Glad to see traditional tuners and nut are returning.
Lower cost is certainly a welcome change.
Ocean Perimeter quilt models are gorgeous - just don't know if I want to stretch to $4500.
Maybe at next year's Gear Fest...

Got rid of my 2013 Les Paul Standard.
struggled with that decision... but it had been a year since I'd taken it to a gig.
Though the Standard is a "better" guitar and I like the 60's neck, I prefer the electronics/options on a Traditional-II Pro.

I'll get another Les Paul at some point.
