What else can I turn off to prevent Sonar from crashing??

Running SoPro in Win764, disabled the network card so no internet, Have shut off everything I can find, I got a few tracks up but they are blank and empty. I have turned off or removed all the plugins I can l find, And still with only the piano being run and the drum track, Halfway through the third take, Sonar freezes, then becomes non responsive, then shuts down. I'm not sure how many times tonight but I been trying to record this little 46bar piece for some time today. 4am now and this has been going on since at least 7 PM. I don't mind finishing this in Audacity I guess, just curious if this is happening to any one else. May I don't have enough RAM or HDD room, Only 32GB ram and 4TB of HDD, maybe its the CPU, it only has 8 cores and it runs only around 4 to 4.5GHz.
Sigh.....

Hi. I have almost the same pc as you (smaller cpu and less RAM), and mine is running very smoothly (had Win 7 until a week ago). I think it is a settings issue of some sort. Do you use ASIO drivers with your Octa Capture? Is windows and other drivers up to date?
Best of luck.

Re: What else can I turn off to prevent Sonar from crashing?? 2015/09/01 17:45:42 (permalink)
Thanks guys!
Thanks for the advice and for letting me vent. I ran windows update, (a bad update is what caused my last complete system crash which required a complete reinstall of windows), which was a bit behind, but only50 or so updates, and after a few heart stopping scares it is all done, firmware and drivers are all up to date on my OctaCapture, no updates from Roland on that in a year or two, and I don't have any loops and the only tracks I have with anything on them yet are the two I'm recording on. Ahem...excuse me, trying to record on. (trying in sonar as recording in Audacity works just Peachy!) Every third or fourth crash/lockup/freeze it would request permission to send a file/notice to the bakers to which I readily gave permissions for, but that has dwindled to ...well I haven't seen one in a while, just the notice that the program had crashed or was not responding, from which it never recovers. Ya think I should call cakewalk even though they have the reports? Actually I think its easier to just do my diddys on Audacity, I also hear that PreSonus has a free Studio One product for free now.  I just happen to enjoy Sonar when it works, had been wrestling for a while about upgrading to Plat but that fight is well over. ...and yes, on the second take, after the updates, Sonar has crashed again, quickly enough to know that the first take wasn't saved. My error there indeed.
Thanks again guys,

Run windows update again see if there is any more. Check out the optional updates as well (you might want to install these). Keep running it until done.

Have you installed the latest system program for the interface?

Consider getting the latest chipset drivers (intel driver update site) and your motherboard BIOS from your PC supplier.

Update your display drivers

Can you please paste any errors from the windows event viewer?

If you are running ASIO4ALL uninstall!

Always back up!

Thanks doc, I have everything there current, I just did recently a complete reinstall from the windows crash from a faulty update, updated BIOS and chipset drivers then, ASUS tells me everything is current. I have exhausted the windows update program, no joy there. No ASIO4ALL, undid that years ago. ..And I cant backup tracks that I can't finish because of the crashes, although I have learned to hit save as soon as I get something to work with.
I do appreciate you covering all the bases for me though, we all inherently overlook something and sometimes indeed it is something simple. I will dig in the event viewer in windows and see what I can come up with, this will be lengthy I'm afraid. I do so appreciate your help!

I am on a cell so hard to read. Are you writing to an internal disk? Bumping up the read/write buffers to 512kb in advanced preferences for both (sync and caching). A crash when tracking hints a lot at a data stream choke.

Ah! My Mettel friend with the sweet cherry car, always with good advice!
Yes I am writing to an internal drive. And come to think of it, I had been playing with the buffers in an attempt to placate a Melodyne persistent prompt. Maybe a short time prior to the constant crashes. Buffers always confuse me a bit, sometimes high buffers are good (Melodyne wanted them increased) , sometimes low buffers are good ( for Latency issues I think). I dunno. should I turn em up or down?

Also, in the sync and cach, should the 'enable read' and 'enable write' be checked or no?

Buffers can be bad if set to extreme values on either end. Too short and the CPU has to run like a race horse to keep up, and too slow and the system can be left "waiting for data." Since you are already recording "happy go lucky" and your system choked, it seems like either a streaming issue or some service came online that kicked SONAR to the curb (unlikely). Some of those messages above hint at fails to call storage requests, but not researched them specifically.

For buffers, the sort of "happy mediums" to start with are:
Preferences->Audio->Driver Settings: Buffer size of 256 (set via the ASIO panel). These are the ones that are best lower when tracking, and higher when mixing. Unless you actually see Melodyne do freaky things, blow off that warning message. I tend to track at 96 samples and mix at 128 or 256.
Preferences->Audio->Sync and Caching (requires advanced mode at the bottom): File System section. Playback and Record I/O buffer size of 512KB (default is 256). Enabling the read/write caching may or may not help, most likely not since your system is resource heavy. I bumped mine up to 512KB on a massive project a couple years ago, and left them there since.

Just in case on the latency/process side of things; have you tried running LatencyMon on your machine (download is in "Free Downloads on the left-hand side)?

For drivers, Iobit has a utility to check them versus current called Iobit's Driver Booster. You can use this just to check and choose to download manually if it identifies things (since it is slower than dirt to try to get you to buy their paid version). If you choose that, be sure to create a manual system restore point prior to use, so you can back out if it completely (including its installation) if something goes weird with it. I couple of forum users reported the drivers it chose were not correct a couple years back; but I just rebuilt my Win7 with it and was fine.

Thanks again!
I did the buffers to 512 and will go back and uncheck the enable boxes that I had just checked and see, cuz it just locked again. I did have the LatencyMon before my last reinstall, I'll get it back and see. asus keeps telling me their drivers that I'm using are current and Roland hasn't rolled out an update of Win7 drivers for the Octacapture in a few years. They did an update for Win10 but I'm still on 7. But ill check out what the driver Booster has to say. Thanks again so much for the help!

It has been a while since a permissions crash has been posted - I pulled an all night edit on a business plan so I have to grab a couple hours sleep - if nobody else jumps in, I will try to help after I recover a little brain.  :)

I am dimly recalling where installs were not getting the elevated permissions that explicitly using Run As Administrator gives, and that performing a clean removal of Sonar and launching the installer again but this time right-clicking on the installer icon and telling it to use Run As Administrator.

There are other brain farts telling me that some folks had had issues where their anti-virus/anti-malware software had been running during install or post-install where that software was causing Sonar to hiccup, and they too had done a clean removal of Sonar and another install - also with Run As Administrator, and also with anti-virus and anti malware software either temporarily suspended during the Sonar install or possibly adding things to the 'exclusion list' kind of thing - but I think the temporary suspension during Sonar install was a bit cleaner of a way to go.

Anyways - hopefully the above will either help you or will jog someone else's memory to jump in and help get you going, while I grab some much needed shuteye.

I WILL check on this after my nap :)

Thanks Bob, I will try another install, and check.
Mettelus, I did the latencymon with no probs noted, and the drive boost found a few drivers that I had disables like the high def audio and such that I don't use, but I updated anyway just to be sure. Still failing to respond , checking for solutions, and closing....., maybe the reinstall will help. thanks so much guys!!

Re: What else can I turn off to prevent Sonar from crashing?? 2015/09/02 12:02:24 (permalink)
Check out this post about that error.

To boil this down, Win7 has had drivers installed for a peripheral storage device (USB connection), and is prompting a connection call to it (when it is not even connected). One post makes reference to a "Sony Powershot DSC-H9" (camera) drivers, but this could be drivers for any external hardware it seems (camera, phone, etc.).

Do you have any external hardware you connect via USB that has 1) internal storage and 2) specific drivers to run?

Quick edit: another possibility may be your keyboard is running at permission levels above SONAR. Try running SONAR as administrator and see if that helps (right click SONAR->Run as Administrator).

I see that you mentioned that you're running your CPU at 4.5GHz. If you're running it over-clocked, I suggest seeing if the issue still occurs at the stock clock speed.

I would turn off the HDMI Audio Adapter by right clicking the "Speaker" on the taskbar and selecting "playback" and "Recording Devices" and disable it in both, this interface can sometimes override the internal soundcard and cause sonar to crash...

Re: What else can I turn off to prevent Sonar from crashing?? 2015/09/02 13:32:25 (permalink)
Thanks again guys! I do so appreciate the time and effort of all! You and this forum is one of the big things that keep me trying to work Sonar out!
I tried a uninstall and a reinstall, no glory.
Mettelus, I'm looking but I have no connected devices that  have internal storage other than two flash drives, one that keeps an emergency Linux OS on it the other is for the BIOS and they have been in place since I built the machine in '11 or '12. I have had cameras connected in the past to do videos (that worked out rather nicely I might add) but have not been connected for some time, and the external hard drives that I keep for backups are disconnected/unplugged. My Keyboard is a Roland Fanthom X8, and like the OctaCapture no updated drivers from Roland in a few years, I do use it for analog as well as MIDI control, could that be a problem, I am currently, as I have many times in the past without problems, recording both an analog voice through one track and a controlling a softsynth MIDI voice through anther. I'll try and doo those separately and see if that's makes a difference, (that'd be a real bummer as I kinda need the MIDI notes in perfect sync with the analog voice, and I never play anything the same way twice.:/)
-e, I may have over spoke in my frustration, the stock speed on the CPU is 4K and that's where she's at, no overclocking done, thanks for the observation though. I'll try to keep the facts factual.
Shawn,  yessir, all other audio adapters have been disabled for a few years now, except the OctaCapture, I just updated the drivers on those to make sure I am complying with all suggestions to make this work. Thanks though.

FWIW, I have noticed for a while that I get a white screen flash whenever Sonar loads the default template on startup, and the past four or five lockups/crashes/freezes or whatever they're called, what ever I'm recording, I still get that audio and I get the metronome hits but the other tracks, drums etc. drop out. Maybe normal but I thought  strange.

On the subject of USB storage once connected but not at the moment, Windows often keeps a kimd of ghost version of them hanging around. Also does the same thing with MIDI devices.

Windows often can't seem to tell if the device attached to USB port 1 is the same device that was attached to USB port 2 last week. So it launches a fresh initiation of the relevant driver twice (or more). If you go into Windows control panel/device manager as administrator and on the view menu pick "show hidden devices" the ghosts will be displayed. Deleting any to do with MIDI devices or storage might be a good idea, especially the MIDI ones as they count towards the maximum number of MIDI ports Windows can handle.

Flash drives are highly unlikely, but the camera you used for videos may be worth looking into. Does that camera have a software package or driver set loaded onto your machine? If so, you may want to try uninstalling software/drivers for that camera to check, but see below first.

Another thing that came to mind for that would be to check Windows "Sound Card Properties" and see what devices are listed. Does that camera show up as an input on the record tab? If so, it would be simplest to disable it temporarily there.

Thanks once again,
tlw, I looked under 'show hidden' in the device manager and a host of items populated, am I safe to delete all the storage volumes and/or all the storage volume shadow copies (there are many many shadow copies)? I don't see anything MIDI related, maybe that's under a different terminology?
Mettelus, I don't find anything related to the camera, the only options in the windows sound is the OctaCapture's various outputs.
Now I haven't changed anything since I did yet another reinstall, I have been able to record analog piano, vocal, and I did a bass  line recording my jazz and Raptures round wound simultaneously, with out a crash so far. All my fingers and toes are crossed. Not sure what happened, which is really frustrating as I don't know the fix for next time or for someone else.
I will press forward, I am eternally grateful to all!!

RDID1110 is Octacapture.
Do you have USB storage as well? What is it?

Suggested steps.

Remove Octacapture drivers, reboot and install install the latest (whether you are on latest or not). Are you definitely on the latest system program?

Go to intel driver update site.

Try different USB sockets.

Try running Sonar as Admin (or not running Sonar as admin).

Ta.

Re: What else can I turn off to prevent Sonar from crashing?? 2015/09/02 17:52:39 (permalink)
Howdy-  I used to be pretty good at using even logs, but in my years of dealing with this stuff, it's usually more than one problem.  Having said that, I have a 64 bit Win 6 x64 system that seems to run fine, but I'm out of practice, yet may have a few tips.  If someone else has already suggested these, "never mind."

Your event log shows multiple instances of registry keys not getting written due to no access (regsetvalue with a cause of access denied) so the questions as to whether the programs were installed as administrator were relevant.  It also refers to missing updates, and realtime protection from Windows Security Essentials ?    When do programs crash ?  Usually when the don't see something they expect, or they see something they don't expect.

I would turn off security essentials realtime protection when system testing.  It's mentioned in the event log.

As far as ghost USB stuff,  you may not actually be seeing all the drivers installed in the USB section:  Take the following and stick it in a batch file, then turn on show hidden devices:

@echo on
SET DEVMGR_SHOW_NONPRESENT_DEVICES=1
devmgmt.msc

This should show you non connected devices, and I generally delete most of that stuff from device manager (except controllers and root hubs).  The drivers usually re-install if you need them, but sometimes, the reinstall in itself can be a problem if the driver isn't ready for prime time.

If the no access is due to a device that isn't there, the last device manager trick may help.  It sounds like you have one or two flash drives plugged in, one for emergency Linux boot ?  Are they still plugged in ?  I have several ASUS MBs and I've seen them get confused when other boot devices are present, however......  it's usually a boot issue, but sometimes it's just a bluescreen.

TLW referred to windows identifying (or not) duplicate USB devices.  Windows "enumerates" or creates a separate ID for each USB device, so you could plug in two identical MS Mice, and it would know which is which.  TLW is right, that after they are unplugged, it doesn't remember which is which, and often, if not always installs a new driver. Another reason to use the technique above.  You can always skip the batch file, and type SET DEVMGR_SHOW_NONPRESENT_DEVICES=1 into the command line.

Hope that helps.  My system should be in my sig, unless I broke that too

Re: What else can I turn off to prevent Sonar from crashing?? 2015/09/02 19:33:38 (permalink)
Thanks again Doc, No USB storage on the OctaCapture, it is connected via USB though.
I will try a reinstall of both the OC's system and device drivers. I wonder if it would behoove me to install the win 10 driver as its the only update Roland has done, it carries the same version number as the last one.
David, thanks a bunch, I'll give that a try as well. whether or not I'm having crashes at the moment it does appear that some house cleaning may prevent future problems, if I'm understanding correctly. I'll try it and see. Thanks again for all your time and effort!

I mean USB storage like usb external hard drives, your sound interface does not have a storage facility.
Not just reinstall. Removal and reinstall of the device drivers.

Def try different USB sockets (USB 2),  intel driver update and running Sonar as Admin (or vice versa) as well.
Ta.

Thanks so much Doc, trying to follow instructions, I did a complete removal and uninstall of the OC's drivers, and did a download and reinstall of both that are required. Went a whole day without a crash then here again. Trying to enclose a snippet of the details, not sure if I know how but am trying.
