Melodyne - lengthen notes?

I've been tinkering around with Melodyne (2.1.2, Sonar X3) - and was wondering if there's a way to lengthen sung notes, even just a little bit?   I have a good take, with a note or two that just a got a tiny bit clipped b/c I breathed in the wrong place.

Not a big deal, because I could punch myself in and re-sing it, but was just wondering since I was in Melodyne if there's a way to slight length clipped notes?

Yes, the Timing Tool is what you are looking for. There are hot spots within the blob while using it (to adjust the lead, entire blob, or tail), and other options (like holding down ALT while dragging to ignore the timing grid).

ASUS ROG Maximus X Hero (Wi-Fi AC), i7-8700k, 16GB RAM, GTX-1070Ti, Win 10 Pro, Saffire PRO 24 DSP, A-300 PRO, plus numerous gadgets and gizmos that make or manipulate sound in some way.

The timing tool is indeed the trick. I know we all love to jump into the action, but I think Melodyne is one of those pograms that it is well worth reading the whole manual for. It really isnt terribly long and you'll be amazed at what you can do. You will save time in the long run.

Just to double check did you click on the timing tool link in mettelus' post?

It is in the Melodyne toolbar - not the sonar toolbar.

yeah I did - on my Melodyne tool bar I don't have nearly that many buttons as it described in that link and definitely no icon for the Timing Tool.   I only have three buttons on my Melodyne toolbar - the Arrow, the Hand, and the Magnifying glass.

I'd attach a screenshot, but when I click on the Attach Images in the upper right here at the Forum,   the "Gallery/Upload" tab is completely blank with no area for me to attach.

I'm only using the bundled Melodyne also (Essentials) and don't have the timing tool icon. You can still however do exactly what you are after by using the main tool (the arrow.)

If you zoom in and click on the blob you want to work on, move the mouse around the blob and you'll see the editing options change as you move around it. You will be able to shorten or lengthen notes as you wish (within reason!)

On related note (pun intended),   how does one modify or straighted those squiggly lines that go through a note in Melodyne.   I assume those have something to do with the attack/release of a note being sung?   I have a note that has one of those squiggly lines through it going upward, and it makes the pitch sound just a tad wonky at the end of the release of the note.   Is there a Melodyne tool to adjust those too?  (remember I'm using 2.1.2 Essential)

It is well worth it to upgrade to standard for the "DNA" thingy, and I bet that's what it takes for the timing tool as well....

Re: Melodyne - lengthen notes? 2015/09/08 15:47:35 (permalink)
You can also extend a note without Melodyne. Split it within the clip, and use SONAR's timing tool to stretch the end. The shortcut is to grab the right edge of the clip while holding ctrl; the edge turns into a yellow line, then drag to the right. This gives you a preview which doesn't sound very good, but bouncing the clip to itself invokes the offline rendering algorithm, which is pretty much as good as it gets with current technology.

If you don't want to stretch the attack, split further into the note, do the above, and then crossfade some of the attack into the stretched section.

Thanks all.  I found that with Essentials - most of the tools are there but either hidden or scaled back somehow.   Found the Timing Tool though it wasn't at all on my toolbar or anywhere to be found.  If I highlight a note blob, and mouse over the very left or right edge of it, my cursor turns into the Timing Tool.  :)
