New Instrumental Track: Out of Time

Hey all,
I've been lurking around the forum for years but haven't ever posted anything here for, well, no good reason.

Here's one I just finished today. I'd describe it as...ambient + indietronica?

Thanks for listening

    Hi Mike,

    Welcome to the Songs Forum

I'm listening to Out of time right now. I liked that didgeridoo type sound you use... Kinda like a vocal effect or a squawk box. How did you do that? Is it a vocoder perhaps?

Good composition and everything fits together well right through the piece.

    I like it

    cheers

Welcome! Nice tune indeed.  I wonder, what resolution of a file did you upload to Soundcloud? the entire song had a little graininess to it - I'm suspicious of what they do to files sometimes. What kind of sound card are you using? Just curious . . .

I liked the ending jam the best. I could tell you had some fun and you found some cool tones to work with.
I listened on headphones, and found the bass a little strong. I'll give it a listen later on speakers.

    thanks for posting!
    cheers,
    -Tom

    Hey Andy

That weird didgeridoo sound is just Massive with some crazy sync'd modulation.

       Thanks for listening!

Thanks for listening and your thoughts, Tom.

Note accepted on the bass. Sometimes the groove carries me away :)

I uploaded a 48/24 wav file to soundcloud. God knows what sort of voodoo they work on it. Their docs say they encode to 128kbps MP3. I guess I've never tried encoding my own compressed file and uploading that - think they re-encode it anyway? I'm using a Focusrite Saffire 6 on input. Though the only thing that actually went through it was the guitars.

Can you tell me more about the graininess? Is there a place where it's most prominent? What frequency band is it in?

    Thanks,
    Mike

Nice arrangement.  Good instrument choices. Overall the mix is a tad muddy.  This could entirely be the mp3 conversion.

I was curious about this too as I really dug that sound (and I like digi's in general). Thanks for sharing part of the secret sauce!

Welcome to the Songs Forum, Mike.  You debuted with an interesting piece.  I liked it.  The opening synth was particularly cool.

Yeah, that was pretty cool.  Neat ideas and arrangement.   The mix sounded OK here, nothing jumping out on these cheapo headphones.

Of course, now I'm going to have to mess around with Massive a bit...
