Sonar Platinum not connecting to Neyrinck V-Control iPad virtual control surface

Hi, hope someone can help - I cannot get Sonar to connect to Neyrinck V-Control Pro using Mackie Control as the protocol.  Trying the Sonar forum here as well the Neyrinck forum in case a Sonar user has figured this out.

I have V-Control running on an iPad Air. Sonar Platinum Update 7 32-bit running on Windows 7 64-bit on a Dell Inspiron laptop. Ney-Fi version 1.8 installed, Bonjour working, Firewall ok etc.

In V-Control, I have selected my laptop (Inspiron.local) in the list of available computers, and selected SONAR as the DAW. In V-Window on the iPad I can watch my Windows desktop in real-time, so I'm pretty sure the Ney-Fi Bonjour connection to my iPad is ok - no Wi-Fi problems.

In Sonar, I followed the instructions to set up V-Control, V-Pan 1 and V-Pan 2 as MIDI devices, then created a new control surface, choosing Mackie Control, with V-Control for input and output, enabling metering of Signal LEDs + Meters. Then I just see "Connecting..." in the controller module in the command bar in SONAR. V-Control doesn't work.

I've noticed though that when I move a slider in V-Control, I see the Sonar MIDI-in activity light blink in the Windows system tray. This shows to me that MIDI data is being received by Sonar from V-Control. If I right-click on a fader in Sonar in the console, and choose Remote Control... -> Learn, then waggle a slider in V-Control, the controller is interpreted as Note #G8. This results in the slider just toggling all the way up or all the way down, i.e. it's a note on/note off control, which is useless.

I saw in another thread in the Neyrinck forum to delete the ttseq.ini and ctrlsurface.dat files which I did, then restart Sonar and repeat the config. Didn't fix the problem. Also tried restarting the laptop and iPad, no improvement.

Any suggestions for how to fix this?

Cheers, John

I guess you have a problem in the output configuration (from Sonar to V-Control). Sonar is continuously sending "Hello" to V-Control and indicates "Connecting..." till replay. You should see MIDI activity toward iPad (Sonar MIDI activity, Bonjour, etc).

Note #G8 is "fader touched", "fader moved" sends PitchBend MIDI. But you should try to solve bi-directional communication instead of using alternative (unidirectional) approach.

Thanks Alexey.  I've verified in MIDI-OX that the V-Control faders are generating pitch bend as well as note on/off.  I can also see the Sonar MIDI-out activity light come on as soon as I configure the control surface, so I'm guessing Sonar is sending the "Hello" messages but is not receiving an answer as you suggest.

Will see if the Neyrinck team have any ideas how to fix this.

    In this order !

    1) : fire up NeyFi
    2) : fire up Sonar, press P
    3) : Midi Devices - make sure V-Control figures there
    4) : Control Surfaces - select Mackie Control and make sure In and Out ports are set to V-Control
    5) : Apply then Close
    6) : in the Sonar Toolbar, select Mackie as the control surface and let it connect.

Took 5 seconds to connect for me just now. V-Window also working perfectly.

One problem that i had many moons ago was that my ADSL box didn't use the latest WiFi protocols. When i changed the box for a newer one that used more protocols, bam, it all worked.

    Cheers,
    Jerry

Thanks Jerry, that's good to know.  That's the same steps and configuration that I've been following, so maybe it's my home network.

Just to check: what version of Sonar Platinum, Windows and iOS are you using please?

    Hopkinton
    W10 Pro
IOS 8.4.1 on an iPad 2
Latest versions of NeyFi and V-Control

I use the WiFi of my ADSL box - i stay away from WiFi dongles and all WiFi is turned off on the desktop.

Just a thought - if you have rptMidi (for other DAW controllers), turn it off, disable it.

    Cheers,
    Jerry

Re: Sonar Platinum not connecting to Neyrinck V-Control iPad virtual control surface 2015/09/13 06:34:42 (permalink)
Thanks again Jerry, I don't have rptMidi, have tried a few more tests now but still can't get this to work:

    1. I ran both Neyrinck and Sonar with Administrator privileges (and without)
    2. I’ve tried using both the Sonar profile and Mackie Profile in V-Control Pro
    3. I removed all other MIDI devices apart from the V-Control, V-Pan 1 and V-Pan 2. I also tried unchecking everything apart from V-Control in the list of MIDI devices, no change

To confirm, in V-Control Pro I can use V-Window, and select Sonar screens such as the console and track view, and can move sliders in V-Window and see them move in Sonar. This to me proves that the Sonar <-> Ney-Fi <-> V-Control Pro communication via Wi-Fi is ok, and that the problem is MIDI-related and/or related to the Mackie control surface protocol: Sonar sends a Hello message to V-Control when the control surface is selected, but receives no response (I can see the Sonar MIDI Out activity light come on in the system tray as soon as I select the Mackie Control control surface, but no MIDI In activity is received in response.)

I’ve also tried using Mackie Control C4, Mackie Control XT and Mackie Control as the control surfaces in Sonar, still doesn’t work.

Would Cakewalk have any diagnostic software I could run?  I tried using MIDI-Ox but the Ney-Fi driver is not multi-client, so I can't watch MIDI messages between Sonar and Ney-Fi/V-Control Pro; either Sonar uses the Ney-Fi MIDI driver or MIDI-Ox does.

    1) Install my plug-in (see my signature).
    2) Attach it in place of Mackie Control (so, in/out to your VControl)
    3) In the "Options" Tab find "Tweak current configuration...", select "Mack.. control"
    4) switch to the "Overview" Tab.

You will most probably see "Device(Offline)", that is the same as "Connecting..." in the original plug-in.
Right of it, change "Offline" to "Online". That is (almost) the same as receiving Hello response.
Try move some fader in sonar. Do you see corresponding movement in VControl?

If no (most probable), MIDI messages sent from Sonar to selected MIDI Output does not reach your VControl. Either the port is wrong/not configured correctly or something inside VControl App is not configured correctly. There is nothing to check on Sonar side then.

Awesome, thanks azslow3.  I ran out of time this weekend but will try out your software in a couple of weeks when I next have some studio time at home.

I've also just updated the V-Control Pro app on my iPad, and the latest version now crashes when I attempt to use V-Window, sigh...  Looks like the Neyrinck team have a new replacement V-Control Pro 2 for the Ney-Fi software client, but right now is Mac only, PC version to follow.  Seems like this is all in flux anyway, so perhaps my problem will be fixed - or I'll have different problems with the new version...
