Windows 10 Upgraded - Edirol UM880 Not Working

Hi All,
I finally took the plunge and upgraded to Windows 10 from Windows 7 this weekend.   I'm running the latest Sonar Platinum with a MOTU Ultralite Hybrid interface.  Everything so far seems to be working fine except the Roland UM-880 midi interface.   I checked the Roland support site and don't see any updated drivers there yet.   Wanted to see if anyone has any information.   Any word if updated drivers are coming soon?  Is there a work around to get the Win 7 or Win 8 drivers to work in the meantime?

Did you try installing them? I would think W8 drivers would have a good shot of working.  BTW are you using your MOTU with firewire or USB? That ? has nothing to do with your controller.

Hi ibartley.

I'd be very interested in this outcome because I use both, a UM-550 & a UM-880.

Try what kitekrazy1 has suggested, installing the Windows 7 drivers again or even better, the Windows 8/8.1 drivers as I checked on the Microsoft site & it states that USB drivers for hardware written for Win8.1 should work under Windows 10 because there's no change to that sub-system.

Also, I've been annoying Roland by Tweeting them about updating drivers so how about you also contacting their support.  The more people annoy them, the more likely they'll update the drivers.

It would be a grave shame if they don't update them because potentially, Win10 is going to be the last major version of Windows because future updates will be rolling ones so any driver written for Win10 should work for years to come.

Incidentally, what version of Windows are you using, 32 or 64-bit?

Good luck & keep us posted dude!

Hi RickJP909,
I tried installing the Win 8/8.1 drivers as suggested but no luck.  I attempted every combination I could think of including running Setup.exe in Windows 8 compatibility mode but no go.  It looks like the driver itself would install, but when connecting the UM880 to complete the installation, it could not be recognized.  It would just show up as an unrecognized device.

Looks like I have an expensive doorstop unless Roland provides a Windows 10 driver.   I'll try spamming Roland support to see if maybe we can get some attention on getting new drivers.

To answer your question, I'm running Windows in 64-bit mode.   And to answer kitekrazy1's question, the MOTU is connected through firewire.

IF anybody finds out any information on getting this thing to work please post.

I don't have UM-880, so I may be wholly off track here, but many (including me) have found it possible to hack Roland 8.1 driver installers very straightforwardly to get them to work in 10. Search this forum "roland hack" for more.

In the Roland's, the .inf file is where the hack is as Roland wrote the .inf file for specific OS.  Changing the 8.1 drivers, for example, to read Win 10 instead of 8.1 is all that's required.  Then when you connect the device, point Windows to the hacked .inf file and it is installed.

The Edirol MAY be the same way.

In some cases, such as my Frontier Tranzport, installing in a compatibility mode (in this case Vista) installed the drivers and the device works perfectly in Win 10.

Changing the 8.1 drivers, for example, to read Win 10 instead of 8.1 is all that's required.

It's not quite that simple, partly because MS's "mfg name" designation for is not 8.1 but 6.2 !
If you search for posts by me, you'll be able to find the exact recipe, courtesy of our friends at Vguitar Forums.

i got my ancient UA-1000 working in win10 by using the vista(!) x64 drivers:

have the driver package downloaded and extracted somewhere,
plug in the device & power it on,
wait for windows to do its thing,
then in device manager it had the warning icon,
right-click it, choose "update driver software",
then choose "browse my computer for driver software",
browse to the extraction point, choose the driver
ta-da

maybe you can have similar luck? i'd never have considered the vista driver unless i;d read it on a (french) forum
hth
good luck!

This list unfortunately confirms that the UM-550 and UM-880 won't be getting Windows 10 drivers: .

There's also the option of using the generic MIDI driver for the device - see page 49 of the user manual. Not having used either of the UMs I don't know what the difference in functionality is between the drivers...

That's a real shame that the 8.1 drivers didn't work. How about the Win7 drivers, have you tried them? As suggested by others, I've heard of people hacking Roland drivers so that they work on newer OS's but one thing is getting them to install (which you appeared to have done) & the other is getting them to work!

Is there anyway you can try the interface on a different PC with Win10, just in case there's some weird compatibility issue going on with your USB ports & the Edirol?  I once had a similar issue with an M-Audio interface on WinXP! In order to get it working, I had to buy a PCI USB card & then I was able to get my PC to recognise the M-Audio MIDIsport interface.

Worth a try otherwise we should head to one of the Roland forums & build some momentum to other users to annoy Roland & see if we can put some pressure on. Failing that, does anyone know a developer who'd take this little project on, even if it's for a fee?

Re: Windows 10 Upgraded - Edirol UM880 Not Working 2015/09/11 11:49:09 (permalink)
On the back of the UM880 is a switch to make it class compliant. That way Windows 10 will install it's microsoft driver for it. That's one way to go about. Much has changed in the MIDI support by Microsoft. So that would make it work. Another option is simply use the WIN8.1. driver.

But before you do. Just connect (after installing Win10) the UM880 and let it sit. After about half an hour it will probably be recognised and if Microsoft does have a driver it will make it available for you using Windows Update. Many drivers have been integrated by Windows. I am updating my studio right now. So I will let you know how I will succeed (or fail) with the UM880.

For more instructions look at page 47 of the manual.

Re: Windows 10 Upgraded - Edirol UM880 Not Working 2015/09/12 09:39:26 (permalink)
Hello Muziekschuur.
I've got both, the UM-550 & 880 and neither of these unit have such a switch to make them class compliant but you're right in that there appears to be a generic driver mode which can be invoked by following the startup mode procedure, by going into the setup mode and changing the driver operation mode which is great news as it means the device becomes OS agnostic!

That's a great find so thank you and it just shows you why we should all "read the manual" as it appears we all overlooked this feature!!!  Also thanks to Xhedron as you also mentioned something about this mode.

However the bad news is that it disables the FPT (Fast Processing Technology) for MIDI Transmission which means they maybe MIDI latency issues.  This remains for someone to test and report back.

Just in case people have lost the manual, here's that procedure which consists of pressing 4 buttons:

Specifying the startup mode

Here’s how you can specify the type of driver used by the UM-550/880, and how Patch mode will be selected.

1. Put the UM-550/880 in Setup mode. Simultaneously press the [P.SAVE] button and [UTILITY] button. The indicators of both buttons will light.

2. [UM-550] Press the INPUT [3] button.  [UM-880] Press the INPUT [5] button. A button's indicator will light, indicating the currently selected startup mode.

3. Select the desired startup mode. To change the type of driver that will be used Press one of the following buttons.

OUTPUT 1 = EDIROL original driver mode - FPT technology will be used to perform high-speed MIDI transfer. We recommend that you normally use this mode.

OUTPUT 2 = Generic driver mode - Use the standard MIDI driver provided by your operating system.

* FPT = Fast Processing Technology of MIDI Transmission: This optimizes MIDI data processing by making efficient use of the USB bandwidth according to the amount of MIDI data being transferred.

Interestingly, Roland provides info on Win 10 drivers for a different, "lower end" midi interface, the UM-3G:

Here's an update on what I've done.   I decided to go the route of setting the UM880 up to use the generic drivers.  There is no switch on back on the unit but I followed the instructions on page 49 of the manual.   That worked with no problem and the UM880 now works!!

I can't say if there are any performance problems running in this mode but initially there are no obvious problems.   I did one quick test recording and everything seemed to work fine.   I'll continue working in this mode and let everyone know if I come across any problems.   Hopefully Roland will still update its drivers for Window 10 soon.

If your MIDI controller driver won't install properly under Win10, try running the installer in Win7 or Win8 compatibility mode.
ie: This works for installing the drivers for both Komplete Kontrol and Machine Studio.

Jim,
Unfortunately, I did try installing the driver in compatibility mode but it still would not install successfully.   It seems that it has a check for the OS and will not install since Win 10 does not pass the check.   A hack was provided earlier in this thread that would allow the driver to be installed but I've decided to use the generic class compliant drivers for the time being.

Does the powerup sequence needs to be done everytime. Or is it a one time only?

Hi Muziekschuur,

Sorry for taking so long to respond.  I haven't been at my computer for a few days.

The power up sequence is persistent and only needs to be done once.  So far has been working pretty well for me.  I'd like to know other people's experience.

Re: Windows 10 Upgraded - Edirol UM880 Not Working 2015/09/29 18:30:41 (permalink) ☄ Helpfulby mitchellm44 2017/06/05 02:23:58
this may help I got it off this site somewhere when I had problems with my PCR-500 and Sd-90 both from Edirol/Roland,
IT WORKED!!! I have the 700 running right now in Windows 10.  Still testing it for stability and have a few things I have yet to install... but so far so good.

Process I used (Many thanks to MACK for getting this far )  Will be a bit loquacious here, because I'm still not exactly where in this process I went wrong in my first attempt.  I took the liberty to go back up and copy much of Mack's helpful suggestions so we have everything in one place now.

My current system is an INTEL(R) Core(TM) i7 CPU  [link=mailto:920@2.67]920@2.67[/link]GHz with 9.00 GB (64-bit Operating System, X64-based processor) running Windows 8.1.  I'm running a fully updated version of Sonar Platinum Producer.

While still in Windows 8 I did the following steps (1-4):
1.  I uninstalled my 700 drivers and made sure my 700 was turned off (but didn't unhook it)
2.  I transferred my copy of the 700 V2.02 to the desktop.
3.  in the  \vs700_w81d_v202\vs700_w81d_v202\Files\64bit\Files\ folder I found the  RDIF1089.inf file and opened it in Notepad.
4.  I cut and copied the following (from Mack's work above) into the [Manufacturer] section:
;---------------------------------------------------------------;
[Manufacturer]
%MfgName%=Roland,NTamd64.6.2,NTamd64.10
;[ControlFlags]
;ExcludeFromSelect=*
[Roland]
;; Windows7 - Windows XP 64
;; not supported
[Roland.NTamd64.10]
;; Windows8
%RDID0089DeviceDesc%=RDID0089Install, USB\VID_0582&PID_00FD ; VS-700
%RDID0090DeviceDesc%=RDID0090Install, USB\VID_0582&PID_00FE ; VS-700 M1
%RDID0091DeviceDesc%=RDID0091Install, USB\VID_0582&PID_00FF ; VS-700 M2
%RDID0089DeviceDesc2%=RDID0089Install, USB\VID_0582&PID_0100 ; VS-700
%RDID0091DeviceDesc2%=RDID0091Install, USB\VID_0582&PID_0101 ; VS-700 M2
[Roland.NTamd64.6.2]
;; not supported
;---------------------------------------------------------------;
5. Installed Windows 10 (At the end I had a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 650 card that did not load up so my video looked wonky.  Also the second monitor isn't working because of this... but I'm ignoring this for now)
6. Went into the Device Manager (right click the Microsoft logo on the bottom left and open the Device Manager) and disabled everything that was in the sound, video, and game controllers folder (I have an onboard audio, MOTU 2408 PCI card, and NVIDIA options here that you might not have)
7. Turned off the driver-signing signatures:  I'll outline the procedure here for Windows 10.
-Find the power options on the Start Menu (the microsoft symbol in the bottom left).
-Hold down the SHIFT key while you click Restart.
-Once your computer has rebooted you will be able to choose the Troubleshoot option.
-Head into Advanced options.
-Head into Startup Settings.
-You will select the restart option.
-After it restarts again, you will be given a list of startup settings. The one we are looking for is “Disable driver signature enforcement”. To choose the setting, you will need to press the F7 key.
-Your PC will then reboot and you will be able to install unsigned drivers without any error message.
8.  Run the setup.exe from the VS700_w82d_v202 directory \vs700_w81d_v202\vs700_w81d_v202\Files\64bit\ folder and install as you would normally.  When prompted plug in/turn on your 700 interface. (Note, if you've already installed the driver before, the install tool may prompt you to uninstall and reboot - if this happens, you'll have to turn-off driver signing and reboot again!) (I did try this and it does work to uninstall and reinstall...)
Once detected, you should get a warning about installing unsigned drivers.  Just accept the risk and let the driver install.

If all goes well, after a few minutes, drivers will install and the installer program will run to completion...

I went and started my Sonar Platinum program and everything worked perfectly except for Addictive Drums which now didn't recognize my computer!  Reran the XLN Online Installer and added the computer to the profile and after some waiting had it running again in SONAR.

I now will install the NVIDIA graphics drivers and see about getting my monitors back and start using this puppy again... let you know if I run into anything else that's crazy...

Best
Dur

the PCR-500 works fine but no Luck with the SD-90 hope  it'll help

Re: Windows 10 Upgraded - Edirol UM880 Not Working 2017/06/05 02:30:43 (permalink)
I had not tried to use my UM-880 for a while - after I did an upgrade to the Sonar Platinum as I was just not seeing the location to see the patches. I emailed them and after a VERY long delay got a reply but did not have time to look at again for another VERY long time. When I went to try I found the UM880 not available.. and found this thread. I think at the start I had edited the definition file - but the key for me was to uninstall - and do the UNSIGNED Driver install on Windows 10. Then the installer installs with a big warning - but it installs and works otherwise it just declined to install at all - this is using the 8.1 driver from Roland. (I have a memory of editing the manufacturer definition file in the setups - but it literally was at least 7 months ago). The Shift-Click on Restart to get the special options and then telling the setup to disable signed driver check (Number 7 or F7) and that allowed the driver install.

Note of caution folks. The Windows 10 update (patch Tuesday) of 6.14.2017 seems to have broken the UM-880 driver install in a new and problematic way. I have a correctly modified .inf, and run the BCEdit turn driver signing off command. I have successfully reinstalled UM-880 drivers following previous Windows updates without issue.
I'll note I was under a time constraint this morning and didn't have time to investigate. I did see a Windows pop error about a file hash being wrong and possibly tampered with. I'll be trying again tonight or tomorrow.
For right now my DAW is totally crippled, so be cautious with the update.

Driver "signing" (one part of that, it checks to see if the driver has been hacked) has been enhanced in newer Win 10 builds.  I've seen other software/devices that will no longer work under Win 10.  Since the Roland/Edirol drivers need to be hacked, this MAY be an issue with driver signing.

I had a PCR500 and it initially worked OK with the hack driver and Win 10 but the Anniversary upgrade caused problems and I finally gave up.  I sold the PCR500 to a person that is still on Win 7 and can use it.

Follow up on this is I did get the driver to load. Didn't really have to do anything differently. Disable integrity checks and driver signing, use the modified .inf for the installer. I did notice when restarting after disabling driver signing Windows was still saying 'Configuring Windows updates'. This PC had already booted multiple times during the update and had put me through the whole 'Hi we're setting a few things up' screens (or whatever that says), yet apparently I had not been patient enough.
There is nothing in the update that was worth the nuisance for usage as a DAW. And Microsoft decided to make it harder to get to Control Panel and a cmd prompt by removing them from right clicking on start, because I guess we needed that.
In the end I suppose the blame is still directed at Roland for refusing to just basically take the same driver they've got and getting it signed for Windows 10. For me, my MIDI setup is fairly complex, including some multi port drum maps, and there are over 350 projects to deal with. Converting that all over to a new interface is not a trivial task. I'd much rather be just creating music. I guess all the money I spend on Vdrums, SPD's, Fantom, Integra, etc., doesn't mean anything to Roland.

Here is a comment from a security expert on another forum:

The Patch Tuesday Windows updates are vitally important for your Windows computers' security. The Shadow Brokers have released more of the exploits stolen from the NSA and are prepping them for zero day attacks. Microsoft has responded by creating special patches to block the most prevalent methods of exploitation. Updates are even being offered to people running the out-of-support Windows XP and Server 2003.

Most of the Roland hardware, that is supported, now has Windows 10 "plug and play" drivers (built into Windows drivers).  The old products have to be hacked, if possible, to make them work in Win 10.

Yes, true enough, everybody security is beating their chest how dangerous the threat landscape is and how important they are to IT. I won't derail this important thread for Edirol/Win 10 users other than to note the first Ransomware exploit was predicated around an obscure exploit in SMB 1.0. Hardly an issue for Windows 10 users.
Nonetheless, Microsoft will likely be releasing a steady stream of exploit patches for the foreseeable future.
Hopefully by temporarily disabling integrity checks and driver signing those of us relying on the tips from this thread will continue to have usable Edirol devices (perfectly good hardware, just abandoned by the manufacturer).

I just want to share what I found joy the UM-880 again. I did take it out from the rack and just about to junk it, but my conscience doesn't clear why Roland make such junk. It should be a way to work. I get try and try again.
Here is How to make the Edirol UM-880 work with the w8.1 driver work. Download the latest driver from the Roland website. https://www.roland.com/global/support/by_product/um-880/updates_drivers/ > install it to your computer, >Plug and turn on your UM-880, >Restart your computer, >After your PC back, type UM-880 to the searching bar, >When it pop up, right click on the UM-880 icon and click "Run as Administrator" and restart your computer. After you PC on, make sure your system channel output must be flashing. It works again. I love it!

Re: Windows 10 Upgraded - Edirol UM880 Not Working 2018/09/16 19:44:12 (permalink)
My findings for future reference.  Both the .INF update and disabling driver signing were necessary steps:
1. Uninstall broken driver / 'Unknown Device' from device manager if necessary.
2. Update [Manufacturer] section in the .INF file to add a Windows10 option:
;---------------------------------------------------------------;

[Manufacturer]
%MfgName%=Roland,NTamd64.6.2,NTamd64.10

;[ControlFlags]
;ExcludeFromSelect=*

[Roland]
;; Windows7 - Windows XP 64
;; not supported

[Roland.NTamd64.6.2]
;; Windows8
%RDID0015DeviceDesc%=RDID0015Install, USB\VID_0582&PID_0014 ; UM-880

[Roland.NTamd64.10]
;; Windows10
%RDID0015DeviceDesc%=RDID0015Install, USB\VID_0582&PID_0014 ; UM-880

;===============================================================;

3. [Shift] + restart Windows 10.  Buried at the end of the resulting page menu is an option to restart disabling driver signing... restart.
4.  Install driver as instructed allowing unsigned installation on resulting dialog.
