Weird problems with Windows 10 and Sonar

This is on my laptop, not my DAW, which is still W-8.1. Everything is wonderful on the DAW... however, I have Sonar on my laptop too. I rarely use it on my laptop but I'd like for it to work in case I want to use it and until now it did.
I upgraded to W-10 and just opened it but it was not until yesterday that I tried to use it.
It loads but it stops before any sort of start screen and just sits (I also tried X-3 and had the same problems). I accidentally found the way to make it work by right clicking the icon on the taskbar and choosing to close the program. It does not close when I take that action but the message box pops up that tells me I have no output set for the metronome. I click OK and then Sonar loads HOWEVER, the Control Bar at the top is inactive, greyed out IIRC, (I'm on my DAW now I'm defragging my laptop after seeing that suddenly the drive was almost full, I deleted some music and got back to about 40gb of free space on a 500gb drive)... so,
I also bumped into the "fix" to make the Control Bar work. Clicking on the Now Time slider activates the Control Bar.
I was able to play back a project. I didn't try recording anything yet.
I downloaded Reaper last week, just to look at.. I have no intentions of taking the time to learn another DAW but anyway, I imported a couple of tracks from North is False into Reaper tracks and they player there too and everything seemed to work. I don't know if knowing that helps or not but I thought I'd throw it in since I tried it and it seemed to work fine.
The only thing I've done other than tweak what ever privacy settings I can on W-10 was to update CCCleaner and run it.
I wish I had tried working with SPLAT or X3 before I did that, but if wishes were....
Since both X3 and Platinum are having the same weird it makes me think that it isn't a problem with the programs but I don't have any idea what could cause this sort of behavior.

So, any ideas of what I can do? Anything to check? I'll be out for a while this evening so I may be able to check back later today or it may be tomorrow. The C drive didn't need to be defragmented at 9% but I ran it anyway. System is 12% and it recommends a defrag, and I will but it is set to automatically check and run every week.

One other thing... I don't remember how much free space I had a month or two ago but it wasn't under 20gb like was last night.
Could W-10 be using up a LOT of space? I am considering rolling back to W-7 on the laptop unless it has been too long or I removed what I needed for a rollback when I ran CCCleaner.
Dang it. Maybe I should get a new HD...

Thank you.
Julien

Hi. When I upgraded my laptop to Win 10, I had a number of leftover folders from Win 8. I tried to access them one by one, and deleted the folders that could no longer be accessed (running as admin, with all folders showing). After that, I gained a substantial number of Gb.
    No problems afterwards.
    All the best.

Run disk cleanup utility in windows.
Check your Sonar downloads folder and other places you do downloads.
Run chkdsk /R from an administrative command prompt.

    Cheers..

I was able to check again, the defrag finally finished.
I opened Platinum, the "Start Window" came up. I chose a project. The window went away and then nothing happened, none of the controls worked. I right clicked on Sonar in the toolbar. I tried just clicking on Sonar Platinum in the popup menu but it did nothing. I chose Close this window and then got the metronome message and the project loaded. I tried and was able to add a VST instrument to a track. The Control Bar was inoperative. Everything was greyed out except the slider for the Now Time. The Now Time > and < buttons did nothing but when I clicked on the slider everything in the control bar lit up and seems to work. Obviously, I have not tried everything to see.

    I have rebooted.

I tried to defrag the "System" it says it is 12% and when I try to run defrag it does a little, tells me it is 25% and stops and again tells me it needs to be optimized. So, I'll see if the reboot to install updates helped. Someone is one the way to get me... going to see Minions with wifey and grand daughter...

    Later and thanks!

Am having a little trouble with the cleanup utility as noted in my second post.
What to check for in downloads folder?

I'll run chkdsk, I know how to do that. I'll get back with you tomorrow, thanks!!

Not cccleaner (avoid it! May screw your system windows 10 has not been out long enough), but the disk cleanup utility:
    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-gb/windows/delete-files-using-disk-cleanup#delete-files-using-disk-cleanup=windows-8

Just delete downloads you don't need any more. In the Sonar downloads folder you don't need old versions for instance.
You could also offload your downloads to an external hard drive.
    And don't forget to backup!

    Cheers...

well, I already ran CCcleaner.... I'll get it sorted out over the next few days or get someone to fix it. Maybe reinstall W-7 and upgrade again later. I still have the numbers on the bottom of the computer and I'm sure I know someone with a W-7 disk. I hope I don't have to do that. I can get extra space, I just want Sonar to run correctly.
I just got back. Will check since the reboot and new install of updates to see if a reboot helped.
    Tomorrow!
    Thanks,

Well, the reboot seemed to fix whatever was wrong. Everything seems back to normal... and I now have nearly 48gb of free space too. Gift horse and all I guess... I'll take what I get if it works!

    Thanks. Computer weirdness...

Ha.. I just assume people do reboots all the time and I never recommend it. Reboot is first thing you should try, shutting down at the end of the day is always recommended.

Anyway you have advice for further maintenance should you need it, I recommended that everybody does chkdsk /R and disk cleanup utility and defrag, at least once or twice a year...
