Focusrite Clarett 8PreX

Looks like at least one major player is not ready to declare thunderbolt dead for pc.  Any thoughts on this unit?  It looks pretty impressive to me.

Sub question.  I have a thunderbolt ready motherboard.  I am not quite certain what that means.  I know it means I still have to buy a card if I want to run thunderbolt.  What are the options for thunderbolt cards and what do they cost?

A lot.  Usually your higher end vendors have thunberbolt.  Resident Audio T2 is the lowest price unit $199.
You also have to do research that your board is compatible with the add on card.

Check out Sweetwater's site on TB interfaces.  They are pricey units. Firewire is dead.  You are seeing a lot of those FW Scarletts on sale.  How long until they become doorstops.

You want to buy the Thunderbolt AIC (add in card) that was specifically made for your motherboard.

I was thinking about this last winter. I am under the impression that my ASROCK Z97 Anniversary mobo can't take a TB adapter for my studio desktop. I've added 2 -2Tb Seagates and 32 gb of G Skill since getting it, but should have paid more attention to the mobo.

After Jim suggested the MOTU Ultralite AVB I/O, I got a great a deal on a Scarlett 18i20 then an OctoPre Mkii, so I am plotting upgrading to the AVB at some point. I've also considered the Audient i22 and am still waiting to see/read reviews on the Arturia Audio Fuse.....

And I found this one supports my motherboard.  Considerably less than the $199 someone mentioned earlier. $70!  But the Clarett 8preX is $1300!  "I got no car and it's breakin my heart. But I've got a driver and that's a start"

Yes this is correct. Just thought I'd bring it up as it sheds some light on the topic of PC and Thunderbolt etc.

Currently, all Thunderbolt audio interfaces (running under Windows) are using Firewire protocol via Thunderbolt.
(PCIe via Thunderbolt drivers are not yet available)

Some Thunderbolt audio interfaces don't offer Firewire protocol drivers... and thus won't (currently) work on PC.

So essentially, thunderbolt is reduced to the speed of firewire?

@HighAndDry - "Protocol" is just the language between devices. It's nothing to do with speed (although efficiency can play a factor).

FWIW, Firewire protocol over Thunderbolt does not yield PCIe performance.
