Pro tools free
Just wondering if any body has used the free Protools?
How much of a cut down version is it. and would it be an 'informative excercise' to play with it for experience - or would it be a waste of time?

16 tracks max. You can record no more than 4 tracks simultaneously. The songs get saved to the cloud only, not your disk. You are only allowed 3 songs then you have to erase or pay for more cloud space, but you can save the rendered mixes to disk.

And it would definitely be a place to "start to get familiar" with Pro Tools..

So worth investigating...
are any views like Sv disabled?
I assume If I install axx plugins it will pick them up. - but what about rtas or vsts?

Yeah, definitely install it so you can see how bad it sucks. I made my first "song" which was only an imported wave file so I could try the included effects, clicked "save" and it took about 10 minutes to save to the cloud. It kept telling me about the free "Expand II" so I went to the store (right there on the menu bar ) and bought it for $0.00. The download started and after about one hour it still wasn't finished so I gave up and canceled everything. During that one hour my quad core was at 100% on all 4 cores. I have never seen that happen with any software before! I was actually going to purchase Pro Tools because "everybody uses it". I'm not going to purchase it anymore. You don't know how good you have it with Sonar until you try someone else's software. To be fair to Pro Tools, I assume that there is probably an issue with my computer/audio interface that is preventing it from working properly. I probably could contact Pro Tools support and get it straightened out, but I'm not going to.

I tried it yesterday. Installer required reboot. OK, no problem. First launch: some random error message and it crashed. Second launch: crash again. Third launch: now it worked(!). Pro Tools Free is practically a launchpad for upgrading and paying $$$.

I hooked up my old Digi 002 rack and while it plays audio OK, it locks up when trying to save and uses 100% cpu. The firewall is off. I can't get the mixer view to appear, only the track view, so something is hosed. I'm going to try to uninstall and reinstall this evening and see if anything changes. I really want to give it a fair try. @Elfin, How's it working for you? Edit: I just found out that Pro Tools is not Windows 10 compatible (yet): http://avid.force.com/pkb/articles/compatibility/Windows-10-support-for-Media-Composer-Pro-Tools-Sibelius-EUCON-and-ISIS

Good thread. I still get those reminders saying "you haven't downloaded your free version" ... I reckon I won't ... DAW is offline, don't want anything in the cloud, either ... 16 tracks max is not representative how real mixing would feel and sound like ... You guys saved me a few hours fiddling with something that I don't need. Thanks!

Yeah. I had to purchase it from the store for $0.00. it's in "My Products" now and says no serial number or activation required, free download. It is a 1.23GB download. This is their sneaky way of getting you "conditioned" into using the store. Resistance is futile. You will be assimilated. The link for the store is on the tool bar!!! LOL. I also thought this was very clever of them: If you open a project that contains a plug-in that you don't own, a pop-up appears that alerts you that you don't have the plug-in, then it asks whether you want to purchase or rent the plug-in!

Yup way things are going. I would not be surprised if Sonar start menu goes this way in the next few years. Actually would have nothing against it as long as it isn't in your face.

Ouch... I hated it! Got rid of it as soon as I could. But then again, I never had so much love for pro tools. I was hoping I could treat simple projects that I get for work with it. But now, too many issues.
