Relapse - Opinions needed

Folks,

Relapse, a song written around the "flaw" of many mortals, the kink in the chain, wether thats addiction or emotional disaster. Its an electronic diachotomy in that its has laid back floating electronic parts and in your face aggressive electronic sections. Its about 90% done, few tweaks and barely mixed but

Does it flow?
When do you get bored?
What bothered you?
What would you do different?
Is is s good as other song of mine that you have heard?

Thanks,

Cian

Hi Cian,

Yeah... I mean, it is different, for sure, but your vocals are, yet again, sound as a pound (or euro). Accompanying music fits well, in my opinion.

At 90% complete, I'm sure there are still things you yourself want to improve.

Flow? Get bored? Bothered me?

Don't know about flow, exactly. It seemed okay to me.

The song is too short to get bored of. I mean... Have you tried to listen to one of my ten plus minute ambient shabookas (made up word)? I'll give you bored

I'm no songsmith so will let others feedback on that. From an instrument point of view the minimal arrangement works very well, everything has it's own space in the mix. The use of sfx fit in really well and as for getting bored, not here I enjoyed the listen.

If anything I may have put a touch of reverb on that very last gunshot, but that's my own taste.

it's got some great some parts, especially from 3.10 min onwards it's fantastic....the drama is great imo.
perhaps a 'heavy dance/R&B bass and drums type' would spice up the stuff before.
just a little of mouth noise, a little further from the mic would fix that probably.

talk or sing, no need to 'set your throat' just sing from your lungs (and heart ofcourse).
your pure voice is great, and the louder / full throttle parts are killer, will get people to listen again and again.
let me know if I need to shut up, just say thanks...no worries + good luck

The sound stage is well set.  Mix is good and vocals too. Lyrics are engaging.

It sounds like it's around 100bpm.  Did you consider a faster tempo?  If you are looking for a perspective change and if it's not too much trouble, you might consider having a listen to the music at around 120bpm.  Even if you decide that the current tempo is what you prefer, hearing it faster may spark some ideas.

much enjoyed!

I liked the song and the lyrics seemed meaningful to me. The time/feel change in the end was interesting. It might be useful to do that in the middle of the song and then back to the beat as it were.

You have a lot of different elements in the song and the transitions are nice. It kept me entertained till the end even though its not my typical listening style choice.

I like you vocal style also and it worked well with this.

I would change the sound of the snare and maybe the kick as well.

Good job.

nice tune, sad subject, very well mixed indeed. I think it's the subject matter that keeps me at arms length, not your arrangement, parts, vocals - all of those are excellent. Really quite well done!

I could see you popping up the gain or automate the volume a spike on the "lapse" part of "relapse" - as it is, if I didn't know the title I might have assumed it was "relax" which is a dramatically different interpretation than what  I think you are going for here.    :)

your stuff is always a pleasure to listen to.

cheers,

Hi folks,

Thanks for all your feedback. I went back and had another pot at this.

Seems that the second half of the song interested people so I decided to place that in the middle.

I have included  many other modications including bass, sound effects, percussion samples etc

Im still keen/cian ;-) for feedback in a sense of impact of the track, coherency and what elements of the song are/should be to the fore.

Second and third sections were really strong, the opening is the weakest IMO, but I can't really put my finger on why. I think Wouter says it best though...

As for the song itself, I like what you've done. On second listen, from 1:30 on, you've got the makings of something special here.

I really like what you've done with this Cian. Far from celtic though :).....I can't find much to nit about on this, I mean, we all have different approaches and opinions on what we think sounds good. The mix was really hot in my cans..if I would have been at half volume I would have probably hurt my ears, yet it didn't sound overly compressed. You've done a great job of limiting it to maximum loudness for this kind of music.
As to my earlier comments about our opinions, I'll give you a few of mine but they are only opinions and not necessarily any better or worse. When I listen to the vocal it comes in vocal spurts...statements are grouped with a definite stop and go feel. If it were me I might take more advantage of that in the music. IOW I might make the stops more abrupt coinciding with rhythm..does that make any sense to you..probably not :) I think it would make the beat and movement more dynamic. Sounds great what you've done!

first time I've heard it so I can't comment on improvements etc.
Great song and production.
I would like to hear the vocal a bit more 'in your face' and dirty. Maybe reduce the reverb and add some saturation?

Thanks guys
Dan, from 1:30 is that catchy hook "Relapse....relapse" I obviously need to get to it quicker or play it more.
Starrise, thats a good one I always think I struggle to get that loudness. I do know what you mean by the music phrasing, you mean emphasise it.
Daryl, thats a good idea and yes I prob will saturate it take the sugar off it.

Any other comments before I go at it again?

Hey Cian,
great subject and one very dear to me.
these are just MY thoughts, you asked for personal opinions so here's mine...
I'm not that fond of the first part myself
the part at 1:21 where you're doing some kind of Eastern sound is very different, too.
1:48 is where I started to get interested but then at 2:17 I started losing interest again.
3:26 my interest started back up again... ;-)
that last gun shot was clearly VERY different from the other ones in the song and so it made the previous ones seem like there was something wrong with them.

again - these are purely opinion and taste, these are NOT things I think are wrong from a performance, mix or production standpoint.  purely taste and only because that's what you seem to be asking for in your OP!

feel free to ignore!

performances, especially vocals, were awesome, as usual from you!

Beagle,

Exactly the feedback Im looking for. Thanks

Seems to be a common place where people's attention wilt.

As for the last gun shot, yes it is different, just cos well I could but if that what you observed then it may be better to change it.

Thanks
