Nice faithful version. On first listen - vocals and drums (esp snare) too loud, which is making the whole track sound a little empty. All the good stuff in the middle is there, but a little buried. Snare needs to be bigger, but further back.

Hi, Mark, Wow, another amazing re-creation of a great classic track! It's always great to hear one of your fantastic covers! Excellent playing as always, and a faithful redux of the original instrumental tones used by Genesis, and MGC59 did a super job on the vocals and harmonies. My only minor crit is that to my ears, it seems to be lacking a bit in overall low end, at least here on my monitors. But, I haven't heard the original in forever, so maybe that's what it sounded like and what you're shooting for. Anyway, dynamite job as always, Mark, looking forward to your next one! Have a good one! Bob

The tracking and performances are really good.... a very faithful re-creation of one of my favorite songs. I agree with jamesg1213.... the vocals and drums (certainly the snare) seem to be too loud and it takes away from the depth of the music. When doing a faithful re-creation like this - do you reference the original during mixing? You likely should - at least for the balances. But I'll end the way I started.... this is great. You've mastered the tones and the timing.

James, Appreciate listen and the critique. I have already done a few tweaks to the mix, based on your comments, and will post an update soon. I know you are a Genesis fan and have a lot of knowledge of their musical style and mixing techniques so very much appreciate the feedback. The unfortunate effect of hearing a song too many times is that you become blind to certain aspects of it. As soon as I read your message, could immediately hear the problems:) The playing and production are also challenging for this style of music but am happy with the way they all turned out. For me the struggle is always more with the mixes than the overall playing or arrangements. This forum has been an invaluable resource for further developing that skillset.... Lot's of great ears here/hear..... More to come. Regards

Nice! Great version... Mix-wise it's already been said - more balance between the vocals/drums and instruments, and a bit more bottom end needed. When the toms come in the lows seem OK, so I think it's mainly the bass itself and perhaps more thud for the kick (which is nicely punchy as is).

Sorry I have been remiss in responses, have been slammed at work and also had a plumbing incident at the house over my music room so had to evac all my equipment for repairs..... In any event here is an updated mix based on feedback above. Also posting the link at the top of the thread along with the previous mix. Thanks for the suggestions. Sorry to hear about your plumbing incident......(I just replaced a toilet that always seemed to be clogged.....no more plungering...YAY!!!). Anyway Mark, I have to say this new mix is just SPOT ON!!! It's night & day (I listened to the old mix first and then this one). Now, everything sounds upfront, loud, and clear......mixed & performed very well!! Excellent work....this is a keeper (in my book). :))

That's got it Mark, excellent! Nailed it. MGC has a great voice, even reminiscent of Ray Wilson who sang with Genesis for one album.

Mesh - Appreciate the re-listen and comment. Good to hear that everything is in its' place. Glad you got your plumbing issue sorted as well:) It is a real pain to deal with that kind of problem. James - Appreciate you stopping back to check the newly updated mix. Very happy to hear it is meeting expectation. I agree on the singing, very good job. Thanks to everyone for the comments after the first mix was posted for the excellent suggestions. Made all the change updates that were commented on and a few other additions. Used Wave's Center to push the guitars and keyboards busses out to the side a bit more. Also added the UAD Ampex ATR-102 2-Track Tape to the Master output which added a nice touch to the mix. Appreciate it.

Hey Mark Man I love me some Genesis and this is one of the great ones! I didn't listen to the old mix, just the new one, however, I personally think the vox and snare AND the toms are too loud in the mix. performances are all excellent, including the vox; very nice! if you are going for a faithful repro, I'd revisit that arp, the sound is not quite what Banks used from my recollection... sounds and performances are fantastic!

Reece - Appreciate the listen... I wonder if you clicked on the old version (still posted in the thread and on the Soundclick Page) The Toms, Snare and LVox were too loud on the original mix but I think they are reined in now. Maybe not? Walt - Thanks for the comment. Appreciate it. Dan - Thanks for checking out the updated mix. Glad the changes brought it up a level. Was a fun song to work on for sure.
