One in a million chances

Or more like one in 8 million chances.

Today I found someone's keys and ID card on the sidewalk and managed to track the person down and return them (thanks internet). But it reminded me of something that happened a few years ago when I found a purse on the bus and contacted the person, who turned out to be a woman I'd had dinner with almost exactly ten years previously. She was Brazilian, had just arrived in New York and had asked me for directions in the subway - we'd gotten to talking and ended up having some nosh later on. No subsequent sparks flew and I never saw her again, until I returned her purse to her and she recognized me. What are the chances in a city the size of New York?

Which in turn reminded me of perhaps the one in eight millionest thing that has ever happened to me. A few years ago, an old friend from Newcastle contacted me and said that a female friend of his (Toni) was coming to New York and that we should meet up. So I did - we ended up going for a curry and having a good laugh and joke. We arranged to do it again a couple of days later - she had some other friends she had to visit. Two days later, I'm walking a dog on the Upper East Side of Manhattan and a strange old lady approached me and asked if she could pet it. She said her name was Betty and we got to talking, during which she asked me where my accent was from. I told her Newcastle, and she said oh how funny, I just met someone from Newcastle in Central Park earlier, we talked for ages. A nice girl by the name of Toni. I asked her to describe Toni and it was indeed one and the same. I called her later that evening and said "I hear you've been talking to Betty in the park," which completely and utterly blew her mind. I mean what are the chances that this old lady would randomly meet two people in New York City on the same day, who happened to be from the same city in England and knew each other?

It's called the "Small World Effect" or, as I refer to it, the "Don't burn any bridges with people because you never know when you'll meet them again" syndrome.

I had a similar funny thing happen in my 20's where I was at a party two hours away from home and meet a guy who knew my date.  His name was Frank and he was there by chance with his wife.

The next week, I'm at work and I go into the computer room (a large room that requires you to open a combination lock to enter) and... there's Frank.  Turns out he repairs large hard drive packs (this was in the late 80's).

That Friday night I'm at my favorite nightclub talking with the shot girl (a friend of my then girl friend) and this somewhat familiar looking girl comes up and starts flirting.  About two minutes later I realize who it is when Frank shows up and says "Hey, you remember my wife, right?"  The whole bizarre meeting thing is becoming funny.

Over the weekend I go to a friend's house where a band is practicing.  Guess who's there?  Yep.  Frank.  Turns out his brother is in the band (and my friend's friend).  Getting a bit weird now!

The last straw was when I came home from work and there, KICKING BACK IN MY FLIPPIN' BEDROOM WITH MY ROOMMATE, is Frank!  WTH???!!  Now, first I should mention that I had a HUGE 18' x 28' bedroom where most of it was converted into a living room / club (where I could test out lighting ideas) and my one roommate was allowed to come in while I was at work and use the bar.  Turns out, Frank and my roommate had known each other their entire lives - their parents were both in the same hospital at that exact same time giving birth so they kind of grew up together.  As for me, I was more than a little wigged out with all the coincidences!

I've had 2 of those "small world" things happen.

    1. I was in Jacksonville NC and shopping for a few essentials at a local store up the street from my apartment. I heard someone call my name and turned around to see my ex-girlfriend standing there with the guy who was the singer in a garage band I was in back in NJ a few years prior.  Turns out that she married the guy after we split and the band dissolved. He joined the USMC, as I had done and was just getting to his duty station. They were in a motel less then a quarter mile from my apt. Since I knew them both, we got together one time for about 30 minutes and I haven't seen either one since.

    2. Still in Jacksonville several years later..... maybe 4 or 5..... playing in a working band, and our drummer had quit. We were talking with a drummer from another band and they were playing at Topsail Island that weekend so the drummer said he'd stop in on the way home to Kinston. My current girlfriend and future wife was with me that weekend.  So  the drummer pulls in to the drive mid afternoon on Sunday. He has the singer with his band with him. They came in and sat down and we talked. The singer was a girl, and she was planning to leave the band too so he explained that everything was cool and we could talk. I'm setting there looking at the singer and thinking how she kind of resembled a girl from 6th grade in NJ whom I had a crush on but never had the courage to tell.  Without too much reflective though on the matter, I mentioned this to her. She said that wasn't very likely since she was from NJ. I asked where in NJ. She said a town called Burlington. I then realized my huge mistake in stating this before considering a better way to have phrased it. I said, you went to BTMS..... and she said yes.... it was her.
I found out that she was working as a nurse in a town in NC with a big college. Turned out all of her kin were actually from the northeastern section on NC originally. Again... like the first "small world" meeting.... we never saw each other again.

So far.... that's about it on the small world thing.

It is also the "weird things effect". When I was about 30yo I saw a hairless Chihuahua and a long haired Chihuahua, on the same day, in different places. I didn't even know they existed. I haven't seen one of either, in person, since.
    Life does weird things sometimes.
That same woman thing is like Twilight Zone stuff. What are the chances... I bet they are a lot higher than 8 million to one.
    Thanks for sharing.
