found solution to: recording automated mute with mouse click- Now with Video

I have enabled the automated mute on a track and tried to record clicking to turn on and off the mute. during playback I watch the automated mute envelope and nodes get created when I click but when playback stops all the nodes fall to the bottom and are off.

I did a google search and see that others have had problems but thought it was related to a controller. I have no controller so that is not what is causing me grief. I also see that other say it is working fine.

I have tried this in console view as well as track view with the same result.

I kept banging on it but I was getting nowhere. Finally I deleted all the nodes to start over and changed the curve type to Jump.

Then I tried again.

This time my clicks were recorded same as before but each click behaved as they should.

I was going to cancel this post but I thought that it might help someone else who was having the same problem.

I have always resorted to a volume envelope to do this as automated mute wouldn't work.
I will try what you have done.

    Thanks.

I searched and found others complaining about this going back several years. No solutions were to be found and some claimed that it worked just fine for them.

If others confirm that it does not work when the curve type is not "jump" I will report. For all I know this is how it's intended to work and the documentation is incomplete.

Good looking out I was trying to utilize the mute function automation style the other day and had to do a work around - whoohoo will give it another try...

In order for it to work you MUST right-click the Mute icon and select "Switch to Automated Mute"

Thanks Bristol but I already did that and it recorded nodes but they would fall to the bottom as soon at the recording stopped and were useless.

As I said that final solution was to change the curve type of the automation lane. Then the automated mute recorded correctly.

If you can get it to work correctly using a mouse without changing the curve type that would be good to know.

Not sure what the video is telling me to be honest.

But, you've got the track armed for recording, what happens if you switch it off?

Also, you do need to right click the Mute control and "Enable Write Automation" to record your mutes, then disable it when you've finished and make sure Read Automation is enabled.

If you look you can see the icon is changed on the mute and Enable write automation is already turned on. It does the same thing whether the track is armed or not.

What is happening is I am playing the project and clicking the tracks mute button. Then I stop playback change the envelope curve to jump. then start playback again and click the mute button turning it on and off. then playback is stopped and the nodes recorded with jump stay placed as they should. While the nodes that were recorded when the curve was not jump all fall to the bottom as soon as playback/automation record is stopped.

I haven't tested this but come to think of it, a "switch" automation's native action would be to jump...a switch can't have a curve. So it makes sense that a switch would want a jump.

I am getting the same results as Tom but ONLY when there is already an automation line present.

This is what I'm seeing in the first part of Tom's video.

If you remove the envelope and just use write automation when starting the transport it behaves exactly as it should.

The morale is, you don't need to have an existing envelope in order to write automation, in fact the very presence of one prevents a curve from being plotted, even though the nodes are written.

    Edit:
Further analysis shows that if you change the Automation Write Mode option in the Track Inspector from Touch to Latch causes an envelope to be generated even when there is an envelope.

    Good catch Bristol_Jonesey.

I guess my urge to watch what was going on while recording the automation was causing the trouble. As soon as the automation lane is opened it creates the envelope.

I noticed it also creates the envelope when viewing automation on the main track in TV without the automation lanes opened.

I like the way latch works better than the jump, but I can imagine forgetting it is set for latch when trying to later automate a different parameter like volume.
