Selecting From and Thru To Export Audio

Hey forum folks!

This has been nagging me for a while now and I'm sure that I'm missing something.  In the past (Sonar 8.5) I was able to select all then place the time marker in the timeline and select F9 to select the beginning of the selection and F10 to select the end of the selection then export the tracks and the export would be of the selection.  Now with Platinum Ippy it seems that when I do this with an AD2 drum track (still MIDI) that it doesn't export anything.  The selection is highlighted but zero contents in the exported file. I seem to have to split the AD2 track at the times I want to export if I don't want to export the whole thing. When I do the splitting the export works fine. Does that make sense?

How do I select part of the song to export?  Do I have my keyboard shortcuts setup wrong?

Thanks,
-Brian.

F9 is now "Draw Tool" while F10 is now "Erase Tool." I don't think there is a default keyboard shortcut for from or thru any longer. Since updating I have just been clicking on the toolbar to select from and thru.

Yes. That's the spot. I am still trying to decide what keys I want to use.

Thanks for the reply.  I changed my F9 to Edit|Select|From and F10 to Edit|Select|Thru

When I select from the timeline it seems as though only audio clips are selected for the export.  The midi clips are not selected unless the midi clip fits in it's entirety.

I just tried this the other day.  I had recorded about 15 minutes of midi drums through my vdrum setup.  I wanted to mix down the last 5 minutes or so to a wav file.  Ctl-A to select all - click dragged on the timeline to select the portion to mix down - export audio - wow that finished fast - no audio in the file.  Select the whole clip - exported the whole 15 minutes.
Split the clip near 5 minutes to the end.  Click dragged the timeline.  Now it shows the clip is selected - export and done.  Do I need to split the midi clip or is there a way to export just the selection without splitting?

and maybe (probably) I have the key bindings setup wrong.  So the From time should be Edit|Select|From = Now and the Thru time should be Edit|Select|Thru = Now?

Thanks for everyone's help.  I know this is operator error :)

Defining a time range should work for exporting MIDI-driven soft synth audio as well as recorded audio, but you have to select the audio output track(s) along with the MIDI unless it's a Simple Instrument track.

One of the first things I did when X1 was released was to re-bind F7, F8, F9, F10, Ctlr-F9, and Ctlr+F10 to their old functions. I was not ready to give up on 20-odd years of muscle memory.

Ok, I will double-check to make sure that when selecting the tracks for export that the audio output tracks are indeed selected with the midi.  But I'm almost certain that I use Ctrl-A to select all as part of my muscle memory from over the years...

Yeah. The Ctrl+A thing is a annoying. I wonder if making the drum track into a simple instrument track would eliminate the need to split the midi clip?

Thanks for everyone's help.  I think I must have been selecting just the midi track without the accompanying audio output tracks. Doh!  Tried it last night and was able to export a selection using the timeline or with F9/F10 when the midi *and* audio output tracks were both selected.  Makes perfect sense.

I'm a long time Cakewalk user but have only started to use midi and virtual instruments with Sonar Platinum. Hopefully this post will help someone else with the same question.  This forum rocks as always!

Cool. Glad to help. If you have only MIDI tracks selected, SONAR will warn that there's no audio in the selection, but if you have MIDI and unrelated audio tracks selected, it doesn't see a problem.
