Light Painting

I'm really fascinated by the light painting technique in this video. Love creativity like this.

Music by Floating Points so of course beautiful

Hi,

One of the pictures I have used many times for a background in my website was from Kit Watkins, the keyboard player for "Happy the Man" and one "Camel" album. It was a bit of "light painting", but in actuality it was a picture taken of a show they did, and the angle caught the reflection ... and it was a wonderful "light composition" ... and Kit went on to do some more of them as well, although it appears that it was by a friend of his, not him. Not sure about that part.

Music is not about notes and chords! My poem is not about the computer or monitor or letters! It's about how I was able to translate it from my insides!

Tell Her Indoors that this is a fantastic picture... I've seen some pretty good night skies in the UK, but not where I live. I've got to get away from suburbia, and even then, I have never seen anything like that .

That was about a twenty minute exposure, taken in the Lake District. At that length of exposure digital cameras tend to struggle with "noise." My D70 (which I used for that, but has since broke), and now my D7100 has some internal software to try and deal with that.

I can't remember if I posted this here yet:-

Wasn't happy with that at all. When I checked the picture afterwards, there were a few stars in it, and they looked like a small line, which suggests either the camera moved slightly during the  five second exposure, or the sky moved. I'm guessing the former...

Best moon shot was this:-

So, did you rent time on that thing? Are you a member of an astronomy club? Did you use your own camera back? What was your initial thoughts on seeing that picture that you had taken? Is it something you do regular? How much is one of them things? What is its focal length? Do you type in some co-ords and it goes off to find an object? Do you mind if I ask you so many questions?

Me too... if I wasn't 63yo I'd order a 12" cutting of San Pedro cactus... to grow of course. I thought I was having one but it turned out to be a torn retina..
Do you think anyone ever really had a "flashback" or do you think it is just a residual change in perception.. Like once we have opened the door, it remains slightly ajar but not enough to even peep through, just enough for the odd wood grain to look at you funny? How I loved those days, and I cannot deny... but they are gone.

I owned it and built my own little sliding roof observatory for it.  IIRC, the scope was around $2800.  It was a Meade 12" SCT (LX200).  I sold it to an astronomy club back in '00 +/-

F = 1250mm, f=10.  I used a special purpose Peltier-cooled CCD camera to take the pic.

Yes, you could type in coords and it would "slew".  Accuracy depended on a very long calibration process - the reason for permanently mounting/housing it.  This feature was really handy for imaging objects that can't be seen naked eye.  I also did some piggy-backing with a 35mm SLR.

Here's my furthest reach ... Stephan's Quintet 290M light years

And a prime focus shot.  25 minute guided exposure on slide film
