Dream Together

https://soundcloud.com/arcanor/dream-together

This song is a recent collaboration with my friend Paul Frick.  It's kind of a dance/electronic song, but with a funk beat and heavy guitar lead in the middle.  Vocals by vocaloid Avanna.

Your comments and criticisms are always welcome.  Thanks for listening!

Super well mixed as usual. I waited for the snare to come in, and when it did, the transients were clipped just right. It nicely drives things along. Guitar soloing reminded me of prog rock so I guess this is downtempo prog rock!

You strike a sweet balance between atmosphere and groove on this one. Very well done!

Very nice Walt! Love the laid back groove you've got going. Guitar solo was pretty nice, was that you?

BTW, if you ever get tired of Avanna, give Blue a try. Once you figure out how the legato phrasing works, its pretty good as long as you don't try to get her to sing too fast.

Dan

@emeraldsoul: Thanks Tom!  I hadn't thought of prog rock, but now that you mention it, it's obviously been an influence on me.  Glad you liked it!

@Mesh: Thanks Mesh!  Glad to hear it works in phones, since I didn't actually mix that way on this one.  I should have tested it with phones on, but forgot.  I appreciate your diligence. :)

@dcumpian: Thanks Dan!  Yeah, I had some fun with the guitar solo.  I do want to try to do more guitar leads in my music.  I feel like it's something I am not too bad at, but I need to work at it more so I can successfully execute the ideas floating around in my head.  My hands are never as fast as my brain!  But on this one I think it came out pretty well.  And thanks for the tip about Blue, I will check it out!

Hi Walt,

Nice work by you and Paul

How on earth does Vocaloid Avannah work? I've done a bit of googling and drawn a blank. It appears to be a stand alone app. But how are the vocals produced? Are they samples? Or do you provide a phrase and note?

I'm intrigued...

cheers

@synkrotron: Hey Andy, thanks for listening!  The vocaloid editor is indeed a standalone app.  It's a bit painful to use, but I've been muddling through.  As far as I can tell, there's no way to input a melody directly from a MIDI controller, so you need to play and record your vocal part melody in another program (like your DAW), export the MIDI data, drag it into the vocaloid editor, add lyrics to each note, tweak notes/durations/phonemes as needed, render the vocaloid audio, export to a WAV file, and finally import the audio back into your DAW.

It's not as fun as it sounds. ;)  But that's the price you pay for having a vocalist on demand.

Really nice mix! Everything sounds just wonderful and I really dug some of the panning fun I thought I heard going on in there. From a structural perspective I would have been tempted to put some breaks in there to add some dynamics to the tune, maybe something to allow you some space to unleash that guitar a bit. This tune certainly works as it is, though. Thanks for posting this!

Really cool piece, love that bass tone so nicely carved, a bit panned to the right? Really cool solo breaks. Background and mix is top shelf as always.

@daryl1968: Thanks mate!  This was a fun one.  We started off with just some chord changes, and started noodling around a bit.  We were trying to figure out if it was going to be a more ambient piece, or more rhythmic.  Then Paul laid in the bass line.  The drumkit drop then became inevitable, and then I had to throw on the guitar lead.

@kevinwal: Thanks for listening and commenting Kevin!  We did do a little bit of panning on some of the parts.  Mostly pretty conservative, but looking at all the tracks, I guess we did pan about half of the tracks slightly to the left or right.  As for "unleashing" the guitar, I'm afraid that might already be all I've got in the tank these days. :)  This was a more edgy/aggressive style of guitar solo than I've done, perhaps ever before.  I'm usually a "slow hand" guitarist. :)

@ohgrant: Thanks Grant!  Yeah, we really LOVE that bass sound.  It's the Scarbee Rickenbacker sound library for Kontakt (which I got as part of Komplete Ultimate - http://www.native-instruments.com/en/products/komplete/bundles/komplete-10-ultimate/ ).  Most expensive music software pack I've ever bought, but it's also the one I'd keep if I had to lose all others.  There's just so much in there!  Anyway, glad you enjoyed the piece. :)

Nice track, the groove is really infectious.   My favorite part is when the guitar comes in, reminds me a bit of some of Bowie's guitar players, Alomar, Slick, Fripp, et. al.  That sort of vibe..  Really cool stuff.

Very nice Walt, mix is great and the feel sublime. I was listening over breakfast and it really eased me into the day. I would've liked that guitar to be just a little louder, you played it well and it should stand out more.  I think it's my favourite piece for the day.

Great mix of styles and instrumentation, something I often like to do myself.  It works really well.  The guitar parts sound good!  The only thing I might change is to bring the track forward just a little... it does get lost just a bit here and there.   I also liked the poly-synth tone, and Avanna sounds just right in this context.

I liked this tune overall, and it is probably the first time i have heard a vocaloid use that sounded right -- not robotic.  I've been curious about when that technology would be 'ready' -- you've proven that, in your hands at least, it has arrived!

Hey, Walt,

You've got a very cool, elegant and stylish bit of smooth Electronica here with a fresh, pro sounding, dynamic mix as always!

The synth part that comes in at around 1:12 immediately took me back to my old Yamaha CS-15 which is still somewhere upstairs in my attic.  It and my two other synths at the time got dragged around the whole Northeast while my band was on the road back in the 80's.  Your song made me want to dig it back out because I always loved the early dual monophonic and polyphonic synth sounds.  The guitar work and tasty melodies on this sounded really nice, too.

Both you and Paul did an excellent job on this, great stuff!

Have a good weekend, Walt!
Bob

Walt,

Great groove/rave number with good definition, variety, and clarity of orchestration. It has a good dance groove, but its not metronomic, with lively, driving drumming and bass. i like the way the Santana-esque GTR solo segues with the more legato vox/horn/polyphonic segment.

Cool stuff,

Bert
