Volume changes not retained, Kontakt cutting off notes

I am having a couple of issues with Sonar and am wondering if anyone else is seeing the same before I report.

First, it appears that volume automation is being written with write being enabled.  While a project is playing, I will change the output on an instrument (I have seen this with both Kontakt and Omnisphere) and, after doing that, the change I made sticks.  If I stop the project and restart it, and then change the volume, it will revert back to wherever I set it the previous play.  I see nothing in the automation lane to indicate any change, yet the volume changes.  It's very odd.

Second, I am getting notes cutting off in Kontakt on a regular basis, particularly with piano parts.  I have removed sustain pedal control changes, thinking that I might have an up/down overlap, but the notes still cutoff/out.  The strange thing is that it is not consistent, meaning it might be these two or chords on one playthrough and different chords/notes the next time.

I haven;t had any issues with Sonar for quite some time, but these annoyances are really impacting my workflow to the point where I am considering using another DAW.  Anyone else seeing anything like this?

Thanks in advance!
Michael

Updated my sig.  Thanks for pointing that out.

Kontakt issue resolved.  Again, thanks.  Evidently, I inadvertently selected the 8 out version of Kontakt.

With regards to, "Try disabling in preferences allow changes in playback/record," I don't see that at all.  I do see Allow MIDI recording without an armed track and that is not selected.  I also see Allow Arm Changes during Playback/Record.  That is also not checked.

Appreciate the assistance.

Your description is a little hard to follow, but if you're changing the instrument's volume level in the synth's GUI, and it's changing back when you start playback, you probably just need to right-click the volume control in the MIDI track (or MIDI tab of the Inspector for an Instrument track), and choose Disable Control. MIDI volume controls are disabled by default, indicated by parens around the value of (default = 101). Adjusting the control automatically enables it, and if enabled that value is sent as a CC7 message on every restart of the transport, and will override any change you make in the synth GUI.

This might be close to what is happening.  I will test this.  What I thought was happening is that I changed the volume via the synth GUI and Sonar was recording that.  I did not touch the volume in the MIDI track.  So it's as if the first time I touch the volume control in the synth GUI, Sonar is recording that and, from that point, relies on the MIDI control to handle it.  I am still experiencing this but have found that I can add automation to take care of it.  It is just not something I remember having to do in all the years of using Sonar, and I started with version 5.  If I had not purposely set the MIDI volume control in Sonar, I could adjust the volume on my synth GUI all i wanted without anything being recorded.  That no longer seems to be the case.

Thanks for the feedback.

Changed the title of the thread to more closely match the actual issues.

Take a look at:

http://forum.cakewalk.com/m/tm.aspx?m=3266563&fp=8

For a given instance of Kontakt multi-rack, you would need to do the above for each loaded instrument, FYI.  It only takes a few seconds for each instrument within a Kontakt instance.

Hope that helps,

I've been having the same problem with the volume control in the Kontakt player, keeps dropping down to low levels on playback regardless of what I do.  Great advice, brundlefly

That was exactly what was happening - right clicking and disabline the MIDI track volume solved it for me!  Thanks - WAY better method to get rid of this headache than all the Tylenol I'd been taking!
