Celtic Starise- Quintessential Day

A long title for this one. This is a remix. I didn't post the first version since it had a vox I wanted to remove. Crits welcome!

As always, first rate. The only thing that might have improved it (for me) has nothing to do with mix, but rather, composition. I'd like to have heard a contrasting segment, then returning to your main idea. Again, not criticism really, just a matter of taste. The piece stands nicely on its own. Bravo!

Bapu-  Thank you Ed! I keep waiting for a celtic purist to attack me, but so far it hasn't happened so it must be close :)

    Biodiode- Thank you !

herbroselle- Yes I could have made it return to more of a focused theme. I think this is what I hear you saying. I do need to work on that more in the future. Thank you!

Bob- Thanks man. I really appreciate it!

Very nice piece. I love the instrumentation and feel.

I think I have commented before on some of your other work on wanting bass (instrument, low toms, bass drum, etc.) in the low end to be added. Still feel that way.  All the instruments you have are extremely played and mixed. I find myself wanting some low end to fill out the whole spectrum.

AGREE WITH several of the other comments...
needs some low end items.... either big tympani style drums, kick drum, or bass guitar, just doing drone notes even...

    but, it's a cool tune,
and is begging for a vocal. LOL
it's basically just one repeating riff, over and over...it's very pleasant, but a vocal melody could go everywhere that the main melodic rhythm doesn't go...
and really tie it all together.

just sounds like a demo of an idea right now..

    post the vocal version too.......

    Hi Tim,
Another Journey in the foggy Gaelic kingdom, full of mysterys, strange creatures and .....well cool chords.
    Thank you.

Ps: I am amazed to discover how prolific you are. Good job in all ways.
Ps 2: if you make the flight here to France, you must go directly to a place named :"Cap Frehel"and it will surely talk a lot to you,(I've been there only once but my grandfather was grown up not far from there... Yes some celtic blood is pouring in my veins.😎)
    Cheers.
    Olivier.

Tim, The entry piece was just a tad off or odd, but then the guitar kicked in right off, so that was helpful. Nice guitar work and additional instrumentation. Does have that Celtic vibe to it for sure. Nice remix for the most part, but need a few separation tweaks on the instrumentation, IMO. Nice clear sound though.

hey Tim, great performances and great mix, but I agree with others I'd like to hear some bass and drums (not just the light percussion) to give it some strength

A wonderful, evocative piece. Nice atmosphere with a lot of intriguing things happening, but unfortunately too much of it is lost behind the guitars. Love the flute parts, but they should be much more up front. If your goal is to highlight the guitars, then I would lose some of the other parts altogether.

Re: Celtic Starise- Quintessential Day 2015/10/30 10:59:21 (permalink)
Rimshot- Thanks ! I remember those comments from before. I made one song with bass in it and am looking into more of that. I am rolling off with a fairly stepp curve at around 60hz and pulling down some of my mix in the 200hz range since I have this nasty bump there in my studio. Without ARC 2 that nasty bump shows up. With ARC engaged it all goes away, so I figured that it was my room. Maybe I've gone too far the other way. Also the bouzouki doesn't have as much low end as a guitar. I just loaded a few new drum programs so maybe I'll see if I can make something sit in there. Suggestions are appreciated!

    Andy- Thank you!!

    Daryl- Thanks a bunch!

Wookie- Yeah that thought kinda sux...lol! Thanks!

Batsbrew- Yes I agree there are some repeating motifs but no more than most other songs that have V/C. And I use different motifs..If I change it too much it drifts away from the theme imo. I hear what you're saying about adding a vox though. This might make it far more engaging. I hear you on adding bass and beats or both "bottom end" . This is basically mixed like folk music with a much different approach than rock or pop. I am looking into ways to add bottom without being too overt. Suggs always welcome :) Thanks for your comments.

Vilvilo- Thank you! I have never heard of the place you mention but it sounds like a very cool place. I am amazed to find such a celtic influence in France. Maybe one day I can make the trip there! Thanks for taking the time to listen! I appreciate the comments!

Rimshot- I'm unfortunately on a short break at work, but I plan to come back by to listen. I really appreciate the link. I will see what it is.

    John- Thanks!

Beagle- Thanks for the vote on bass. I see I have some work to do.

Mark- I always appreciate it when someone comes by to listen to something they might not be very keen to. It shows a lot of effort on your part and I think that it's folks like you and the others that make this such a nice place to visit!

Nice work as always, Tim!   Clean and clear.

Although, I do agree with others in that I'd like to hear a little more bottom, maybe something like a bodhran and baritone acoustic guitar (or similar)?
