Step Sequencer skips notes, what MIDI parameter should I adjust?

Step Sequencer skips notes, what MIDI parameter should I adjust?

I struggle with this all the time... Step Sequencer works OK for a while but after a while it begins to skip notes and sometimes it may go totally silent. GUI shows that pattern is playing but nothing comes out. Resetting audio engine heals the problem but it may arise again in few minutes. It's not just playback issue; yesterday I exported project with one bar Step Sequencer drum pattern and it exported only the first bar.
 
I'm not very familiar with MIDI related settings. All have default values.
Any ideas, what setting should I look first?
 
Is this related to Step Sequencer:
SONAR Preferences | MIDI | MIDI Playback | Prepare Using: [250] Millisecond Buffers
 
EDIT:
In the latest problematic project Step Sequencer was on NI Battery4 Instrument Track.

    250 is a pretty small value. The default prior to X1 was 500. I would bump it up to the old default or 750.
