    Only talks about sample rates and bit depths but nothing on what that actual rms levels or LUFS levels should be though.
     
    It might be interesting to track down something relevant to levels as well.

    i think the article assumes you already have that knowledge,
    and is just trying to clue folks in to how to deliver what you've already supposedly 'correctly' recorded.
     
    there is nothing that dictates what actual RMS levels or LUFS should be,
    that is a matter of style of music, and end user

    Except for iTunes. They say around -16 LUFS is the perfect level for iTunes. It won't attempt to turn a -16 LUFS master down in any way with 'SoundCheck' engaged. Once you go higher than that then iTunes starts ripping down the level of your superloud track.
     
    Just out of interest if you master your rms level to the K System -14 standard you get a nearly perfect -16 LUFS reading.

    yes, but more modern sounding recordings (almost any 2015 release rock) isn't going to get mastered to k-14

    Just got the copy of Steven Wilson's Hand. Cannot. Erase that I bought just because it sounded really good. Good enough to add to my collection of references. And guess what? It's K-14. 
     
    Does it qualify as "rock"? To me it does. Prog rock, anyway.
     
    [EDIT] Just brought it up in Audition to see some amplitude statistics. Oh my, it's got the prettiest histogram I've seen since the 90's. Dynamic as a classical recording. Peaks at exactly 0dB, and Audition thinks it may have 20 overs. Other than that, it's perfection. Oh, and it sounds frickin' amazing when you crank it up!

    Yeah, Steven Wilson is an amazing...everything!  But especially his mixes and masters. Just beautiful.  Have you heard the Yes remasters he has done?  Gorgeous.

    Not necessarily. In time that sort of thinking might be old fashioned. It's downright boring mastering everything to within an inch of 0 dB FS.
     
    I managed to get my last mastering client at least around K-12. Not as good as K-14 but getting there.
