New Guitar Anthem Loops

This is NOT meant to be a criticism to Craig whatsoever... but I miss the days when writing/producing a song meant more than looping something someone else created.

I think I'll buy my cat some loops and see what he creates as he walks across the keyboard ;-)

All in good fun of course :-)

True, we should be spending more time on our 'natural talent" as the base for our music, but yet I find these loops to be very helpful in putting some additional creativity into a song bed. Sometimes, just a little clip/sound can trigger the build up of a song idea......or just looping a clip to jam with can be fun. I used some guitar, keyboard, and bass loops in this song https://soundcloud.com/user278850197/one-chord .....although it's nothing fancy, it just started out as jamming loop.

It all depends on how you look at it......keeping an open mind can lead to something very creative. I sometimes get drum ideas from just listening to the rhythm of an office printer.....a bit odd, but I always look for music in day to day life/sounds.......i.e. Pink Floyds (cash register) intro to Money.

Caveat. This is not a slam on the OP, it's just my opinion on this whole looping thing.

I've played bass with some fantastic musicians in my life (some even went on to be famous). What that has taught me is that I'm not even a beginner drummer, only a passable rhythm guitarist and a novice keyboard player. But, I'm pretty sure I know what I want good drums, guitar, keyboard etc. to sound like.

Every band member has almost always learned that the band is only as good as its weakest member.

So what am I supposed to do if I want to compose a song but my skills are not up snuff? I could collaborate, and I have.

But sometimes I just want compose a song and not wait on collaborators. Now what?

Enter EZKeys, MIDI drums patterns, guitar loop libraries and (gasp) the high end Band In A Box with Real Band (i.e. real players). These tools are heaven sent (IMO) for the composer who is not skilled enough to play what is heard in the head. And as my man Mesh says, sometimes these tools are nothing more than a gateway to the completion of a song by collaborators.

So for those purists who can do it all, I salute you. Feel free to look down on anyone who chooses to use such tools. Most of us won't even feel the **** you're attempting to put in our armor.

I admit it!  I'm a sub-par cowbell player and, since we all know we need more cowbell, I've had to resort to sampled loops... *Sigh...*

Loops are there to be mangled as far as I'm concerned. Some artists go to the scrapyard, fill a shopping cart with junk, take it home and forge it into a masterpiece. I'm not saying loops are junk, just raw material to be used creatively.

Let's say you're a songwriter in a band and your guitar player contributes a part. Are you any less of a songwriter for not having written that part?

I used to use loops for ideas then, if I really liked the loop, I would re-record it slightly different so it became mine.

I also used to make my own loops.  Almost all of my older songs (rock and trance) were lost because they were stored on a Panasonic CD/PD - supposedly safe backup for 30 years, it wasn't...  I only have one loop left (which I just found and uploaded!).  Here it is: http://www.nwdreamer.com/download/140%20-%20Song%20002%20section.wav

It reminded me of all the stuff I've lost...

Yay.

They are all tools. I'm glad we have loops. Samplers... great! EZDrummer, EZKeys, EZEverything... it helps!
There is SO much I don't understand even in Sonar so it is all a help.
I have a bit of disdain for Hip Hop songs that remix the music of past "real musicians". I guess there is a place for it but it seems, to me, to be insulting to my sense of music and creativity.
Obviously some people like it but I don't... that said, I kind of understand, I mean... pretty much everything has been done in the genres of RocknRoll, RnB, and Blues. People like LZ in the late 60s/early 70s covered most of the classic American blues tunes... and how many different ways can you play RnR ? So I understand remixing... I just don't care for it.
Loops and samples are mostly other people playing and we take their parts, rearrange them into out work and it surely helps. What if we had to hire someone to play every part we cannot play? That would SUQ big time. It is supply and demand... in that way it is GOOD!
Who knows where we will be or what we will be doing in ten years. Yesterday was (I think) Back to the Future day. They missed everyone having a cell phone to their ear... we don't know what the future holds but I would guess that it will be better that we could imagine... if the economy does not collapse and the world does not end. Eh...

Good things! Good times!! EZMix too!! Now if I could just hear those high frequencies, lol. I bet my neighbors can hear them!

I still have ACID Music 3.0, I have over 100gb of ACID loops. My favorites are the Mick Fleetwood loops. I've always considered Fleetwood and McVie to be on of the most solid drum and bass duos in history.. they just ROCK!!
I like my Beta Monkee loops too.

I want to get a Digitech TRIO pedal with foot controller, that sounds like something really useful and fun! I like to sit on the porch or in my chair and paly more than playing with my DAW. It is comfortable and conducive to creativity, IMO.

There's an art form in sampling records and putting them together to make new tunes. I agree it's a bit lame when you get a hip hop track that's just plain stolen the hook from somewhere else, but if you look deeper there are some really talented sample sequencers out there. One of the classics was DJ Shadow's Entroducing album from the 90's, I had that on heavy rotation with my headphones & doobies....he managed to create some truly beautiful vibes by piecing together stolen samples on an old Akai sampler and making completely new tunes out of them. If done well, the marriage of say a guitar solo from one record over the bass line and drums from a couple of other records creates a unique sense of depth. The talent is in going through hundreds of records to find the right parts and having the musical judgment to know which are going to work together.

You can always take it in the experimental/krautrock kind of attitude ... then it becomes serious art ... !!! Craig loves it and so do I! Even better at different speeds ... try farts backwards!

Music is not about notes and chords! My poem is not about the computer or monitor or letters! It's about how I was able to translate it from my insides!
