Subscription Question???

I have about 9 months left on my 1st years Subscription and I was just wondering.... When its time to re-new if I don't and then say like 6 Months later a really cool new feature comes and I re-new at that point, do I pay for the previous months that I missed? Or does my next year start at that point?
I'll probably just re-new anyway but I'm just curious!

    It starts on the day you renew. No penalty for the months you missed.
