Scarbee Trial Versions??
I've heard a lot of good things about the Pre-Bass and Rickenbacker Bass virtual instruments from Scarbee, but their website only has a "Buy" option. These days, it seems pretty standard to give people the option to try before you buy...any idea why this seems to be an exception, or if there actually is a trial/demo version available that I'm not finding? I get that the Scarbee instruments don't break the bank like a lot of virtual instruments do, but still. You'd think a guy would be allowed to play around with the software a bit before dropping $80-$100 on it.

These are excellent products. Unfortunately is very rare to get trial versions of this type of sample library, regardless of the manufacturer.
You can try out Kontakt, the software it loads into by downloading the free version of Kontakt players but that will not let you test the Scarbee basses.

Scarbee Jay-Bass is my go to bass library! I have used nothing else for bass guitar sounds since acquiring it. I have intended to get the Pre-Bass one but never got around to it and I really prefer a Jazz Bass anyway. If the Pre-Bass is anything close to the Jay-Bass, it is worth every penny!!! BTW, I do play bass myself so mostly I use a Fender Jazz Fretless Modified bass (looks like Jaco Pastorius's) running thru GK Amplification Pro or Mark Studio 2 and play the part in myself.

My real bass sounds a lot like Scarbee Jay- and Pre- basses. Any recomendations on MM-Bass?

The Scarbee basses sound great with the Fishman Triple play. I think you get six with Ni Komplete Ultimate. No demos to use but there must be recorded demos to listen to. The Ric is the business

I'll admit that this is my first foray into the Kontakt universe (downloaded the free player), but I remember having the ability to demo my EWQL orchestra libraries (Symphonic Orchestra & the Hollywood series), Pianoteq and Addictive Drums, so I guess I assumed the same would hold true for this series of instruments. Granted, the orchestral instruments especially are considerably more expensive than the Scarbee basses. Thanks for the input though.

Good to know. I have a bass guitar, but truth be told, I'm a pretty poor player. :) I can pluck out some basic stuff (albeit only with a pick; my finger picking is dreadfully sloppy) but some of the bass lines I write are too difficult for me to play. I have been using Cakewalk's virtual bass instrument and it's alright, although I do struggle with getting it to sound more realistic and getting it to cut through the mix. Even with trying out different samples/settings and EQ, it just doesn't quite cut the cake which is why I'm very interested in the Scarbee stuff. I typically do guitar-centric rock and some country-style music, so I was thinking that the Pre-Bass might be a good all-arounder.

Yeah, there are demo tracks available on the Scarbee website for their various instruments and they sound good, but none of the styles really gel with the type of music I record, which is why I was hoping to try a few out and see which one has the best feel for what I'm doing. As mentioned in my previous post, I was initially interested in the Pre-Bass since that particular Fender is pretty common in all types of music, but I've also heard that the Music Man, Jazz and Rickenbacker basses are phenomenal as well.

I have Trilian but have to admit that there have been a few times that I've struggled to get the sound I wanted, tried dropping a Scarbee bass into the mix instead, and have found that it just fitted a lot better. I don't know, I sometimes think the Trilian basses have way too much low end and I frequently have to make massive cuts, whereas the Scarbee basses require less work. Having said that I still love Trilian.

I have the MM and the Jay bass, but would LOVE to get ahold of the Rickenbacker and Pre-bass (can't wait for the sale to come back around). As for use, my Jay bass goes on just about everything! Very few times have I found that I couldn't work it through a line easily. The MM bass seems to take more work for the kind of music I compose (mainly Smooth Jazz, R&B and some Urban stuff). Will continue to work with it though as I find it quite interesting. Sure, I have other basses. I have a few that are quite good, but don't really have the "playability" of the Scarbee basses.

So I just checked out a fairly detailed tutorial/review of the Rickenbacker bass on YouTube...oh man, that thing looks pretty killer. Kind of bummer that it only uses samples played with a pick - would be nice to have picked and fingered options - but it looks incredibly versatile and I imagine I can probably get just about any sound I want out of it. (And to be honest, who knows if I'd even be able to tell the difference between fingered/picked in a mix. I'm only interested in the fingered option simply because most bass players I see don't use a pick. But what do I know?!) I do like the option of using the amp/cab modeling within Scarbee or just using the DI samples and running them through another amp sim. And the articulations really drive the authenticity. There's no substitute for a real bass player of course, but for a bum like me, I know this virtual instrument would sound a heckuva lot better than anything I could plunk out on my bass. :) So yeah, I guess I'm now leaning towards the Rickenbacker instead of the Pre Bass. Totally blown away by that video.

If you want a fingered Rick sample library look at Orange Tree Samples Evolution Rick I have both the Scarbee and the OTS and they compliment each other nicely. The OTS Rick does require the full version of Kontakt where Scarbee can use the free Kontakt player. This could change soon as OTS are moving towards regestered libraries that can be used in Player.

I will add that the Scarbee Bass samples are among the best I've heard. I use the Scarbee MM Bass mostly. They simply sit in a mix the way a real bass guitar should. The version I have came with NI Komplete 9 . . . and it was the first time I ever had a Bass sound so great in a mix, without a lot of monkeying / EQing. I have a lot of issues NI and their samples, but the Scarbee MM series is one where I really think they got it right.
