This has never happened before

Hi - For absolutely no reason I can think of, the last 3 times I've fired up ANY software for music - Platinum, Kontakt, Vienna Instruments, UVI Ravenscroft - I get the ultra distorted sound that happens when sample rates are off.But, they're not. I have a lock between my RME and Presonus FS at 44.1. My UAD card is a happy green. The RME is set as my default. And, a project that purred at 32 samples with 38 tracks and a load of plugs while recording, is now pushing the 1st core at better than 60%. At a loss. Any takers? thanks much, Shep
 
I've got the same problem even in a brand new project with a single wav file loaded, zero plug ins.

    Additionally, I turned on WMP - it played fine. I minimized it, and now I have a steady click coming out of the left speaker only. Freakin' weird.
