the biggest problem with nervousness before performing on stage, IMO, is lack of confidence.  know your stuff.  be confident that you are a good performer and there will be nothing to be nervous about.

Be well prepared...
Get to the show early for setup (so you're not rushing).
Allow yourself to have fun and enjoy the process.
Once the music starts, you'll get lost "in the moment"... and the nerves will subside.

Some "butterflies" before hitting the stage is completely normal.
On higher-profile gigs, it's also normal to feel a little pressure to "deliver".

The best thing you can do is get on stage, hit the big E chord, and start the show.

Jim is spot on.

I just lived through the same thing in the last couple of weeks.  I started playing in the Worship Band at church, after not having been on stage for at least 18-20 years.  I was extremely nervous the first week that I got up there.  Now having played in front of the congregation for the last several weeks, it has been one of the most rewarding things that I have done in years.  If I can do this again after all of these years....you can as well brother.

As Jim states....be well prepared.
  • I got my music for the week, requested it early, from our WL.
  • I recorded the songs off You Tube, changed them to the correct key and imported them into Sonar.
  • I practiced every song at least once before going to work in the morning and then again in the evening before going to bed.  Longer on Saturday, until I felt I had them down, even if I lost my place live.
  • I got to Sunday morning band practice before every one else did that Sunday morning.  I had my Bass plugged in and ready to go before any one else was even there.
  • I had a binder set up for my music for the morning and had everything in order and easy to turn from page to page.
  • I made sure that I lowered my expectations for my first time out.  I was determined to preform mistake free, but told myself that if I made a mistake, it would not be the end of the world.  Truth is, I would probably be the only one that noticed.
So, how did it go.  I made one mistake in one of the 4 songs we played....no one noticed.  After the first service, the Lead guitar player, who plays every Sunday, turned to me and said.....man....that Bass sounds awesome....I love the tone of that Bass.  He also said that he really liked how I played with authority.  It has been one of the best things that I have done in years, as a musician.  To get back up there and play in front of people.  To see them reacting to the music in the crowd is just awesome.

Go for it Bro!
