I'm not in BFE but I can see it from here...

Its deer season. I'm hunting in Winnebago Nebraska, staying in Pender, and eating dinner in West Point. Way out in nowhere... :)

Wow, I re-read my post and realized I sounded like a jack ass. It was all contextual but there was no context provided.  Failed humor - sorry about that.

We did get our deer though. :)

So how many hunters did the deer get?  I mean, that would only be fair, ya?

I had a season where I hit a buck with my car at lunch time. $1,500 damage and the deer ran away - does that count?

Re: I'm not in BFE but I can see it from here... 2015/11/16 09:19:31 (permalink)
I fought a deer once when I was about 8 or 9. We were staying in a tent by a creek one summer and a young deer wandered into the camp. He clearly was accustomed to people, and was not too proud to beg for food. Someone handed me a handful of grain and told me to go feed the deer. I walked up close and he stood up on his hind legs. I held out my hand and he punched me in the face.

Now, I'm no millennial, so I'm not claiming PTSD, emotional trauma, or disability because I took a hoof to the cheek. It caught me by surprise. The deer got in a couple of body blows before I could react. I swung hard, trying to knock that cocky smile off of Bambi's face, but he dodged. I blocked a right hook and got in a couple of jabs to his little fawn snout. He dropped to all fours and I thought he was done, but then he sprang back up and charged.

I jerked my head back to avoid a blizzard of flying hooves and then swung hard at his unprotected belly. He grunted and belted me in the jaw. I reeled backwards and he dropped back down. We circled one another. People gathered around to cheer on the deer. My dad screamed, "Kick him in the head!" He wasn't talking to me. Money changed hands. I don't know what kind of odds I was getting, but it wasn't complimentary.

He jumped up and lunged. This time, I was expecting it. He really was a predictable fighter. I stepped back swung my arm wide, and slapped him hard enough to cross his little deer eyes. He fell sideways and scrambled to get up. He charged again, and I slapped him with the other hand. He landed several solid punches, but I kept knocking him off of his hind legs. We did this a couple of times before he wobbled on all fours, glared at me as if to say, "We'll finish this later, boy. I demand a rematch." Shaking his head to clear the cobwebs, he sauntered away, strutting like a winner. I fell down.

Oddly enough, you can't bolster your street cred by telling people that you fought a deer to a tie. My dad was angry because he had bet on the deer to win by a knockout. Even my dog was ashamed of me and pretended to belong to another family.

Since then, I've met other deer who were delightful. They were kind, thoughtful, and tasted great. I keep wondering, however, if I'm ever going to take a shortcut down an alley only to see an old buck step out out of the darkness and whisper, "Fear the deer..."

I hope you get your limit with no slashing hooves, lol. I didn't see the OP (unedited) so I didn't 'get it', probably wouldn't have and don't. On the other hand, it seems a perfectly normal post.
Get a picture of you eating the fresh liver... you need to do this right!
Do you still hunt or use a stand? What do you shoot, (gun)?
BTW, I hate to ask but what is BFE?

Seriously. Have good success. Cull the herd. Eat well!

We were definitely out in the sticks. I rifle hunt with my son - he's 17 and a senior in HS and he's been hunting with me since he was 6; it's a great bonding experience and I treasure it immensely! Hopefully he'll take time off from college next year to go with me.

We've always hunted in blinds but last year we put up a two person stand. Unfortunately, we got out there and the farmer hadn't picked his corn so we couldn't hunt. Lots of money and time wasted last year. :/

This year was CRAZY. Deer reports are way down - many people aren't even seeing any deer. I shot a doe at first light, then my son shot a good size buck within 5 minutes of that, then I shot a good size buck within 10 minutes of that - three deer including two bucks within the first 20 minutes of light! We've never actually gotten a deer together in any season - usually I get one or he gets one or neither get any. :) When we checked our deer in around noon at the Game and Parks station, they said we were probably only the 20th deer checked in yet - WAY LOW. There was only one other deer being dropped off at the butcher and usually there are multiple trucks and a line. Big memories made on this trip, and we were back home sleeping in our own beds that night.

We'll have piles of sausage and pounds and pounds of meat to eat and share. Lots of friends like venison but have no access to it (it's illegal to sell game meat in Nebraska), so we'll give out a lot as gifts.

On opening day Saturday a deer jumped in front of a car carrying 4 girls that go to school at Creighton University - about 15 minutes from me. They swerved to avoid it, rolled the car, and all four died.

Last year we hunters in Nebraska killed 52,000 deer. Females breed at least once a year, and twins are not uncommon. Think of the math on that.

Regardless of anyone's stance on hunting, population control is mandatory for so many reasons...

Only a little.  Killing for pleasure?  Can't condone it.  For food to survive?  Absolutely, go for it.  Of course, the main reason control is now required is only because we (man) have either killed off or pushed out most of the predators that would normally keep the deer population in check.

I DO think it would be more sporting if the opponents were carrying as well (fight for the right to arm bears! LOL!).

I don't have anything against hunting. Hey, it's not like the burgers I eat were volunteered by self-sacrificing cows. I enjoy my place near the top of the food chain. I can afford to be picky. Granted, I'm too lazy to go hunt my own food, so I can appreciate the skill, patience, and care required to be a hunter. Also, I'm hoping that someone will keep me supplied once the zombie apocalypse destroys civilization. My other option is to make sure I get taken out at the very beginning. I don't really like the taste of brains, even with melted cheese.
