Is there a way to synch individual tracks from a 4 track recorder to Sonar Platinum?

Hi,

I have several older demos that I had produced on my Fostex 280, which now stopped working and I am looking into either getting it repaired or buy one on eBay as soon as I see a reasonable price.  The demos were produced by a friend who I am not able to recreate the guitar work he did.  Is there a way to take each individual track and play them from the cassette multitrack recorder onto individual tracks in Sonar Platinum?  I tried this once a few years ago with the 280 and I forget what Cakewalk version I had at that time, but the tracks were not synching properly.  As soon as I tried to get the second track onto Cakewalk, I wasn't able to get it to play in time with the first track so I gave up on the idea.  I have a Roland Quad Capture USB Audi interface that I recently purchased and it makes a difference in the sound quality.  I was hoping to get some good analog demos and rather than mix down the entire demo from 4 tracks onto 1 digital, I thought I would look into getting each individual track again this time.

Thanks for your help!

If you have four outputs from the deck, and four inputs on the audio card, just hook them up and send each one to it's own track.

If the deck has a midi interface, you might could slave a midi sync to keep Sonar and the deck connected (set one to be the master and one to be the slave).

Other than that, I'd think you'd have to record each one onto its own track and then slide them around - read as much hard hand waving and slicing - to get them close.

    Good luck!

A rack of noisemakers is not a definitive substitute for creativity. (though it does seem to help)

The Fostex probably won't maintain sync, but that's okay. You can dump them into SONAR and then audiosnap them to line them up. If there's a lot of float it may require some editing of the audiosnap markers but that's relatively straightforward.

Maybe if you can snag a Fostex MTC-1 Serial Port MIDI Interface at a bargain price, it will make the transfer much easier. Being that the Fostex 280 has a serial port on the back, designed specifically for the use of this midi interface unit.

Also, IF you can do any further recording add a snare hit (or clap your hands) on all four tracks at once, and that makes it easy to line up.

Sonar Platinum | Windows 10 64-bit | 8 cores | 16GB Ram | Focusrite Scarlett 2nd generation 18i20 interface | too many guitars, way too much software  | Presonus Eris 8 Monitors (thinking about a Presonus T8 sub!)

    Hi,

Thanks for all the responses!  Actually, there is a Fostex 280 on eBay with the Fostex MTC-1 Serial Port MIDI Interface he is selling it for about $260.00 so maybe it is worth it.  The Roland Quad Capture only has 2 inputs, but that should be ok where I can get two tracks at a time and synch them.  Thanks to all for your help!!!
