Cleaning Up A Project File For Performance

Hello Everyone,

I have a project file with about 70 softsynths playing at once (i guess you can say I am not into minimal lol).   The playback and overall performance of this file is becoming very slow.

I understand I can bounce all my tracks to pure audio tracks.  I would then delete all the softsynth instances along with their respective tracks.   This way my project file would ONLY contain 70 AUDIO tracks and will be totally rid of any softsynths in the synth rack at all.

My question is, would this be sufficient?

Would it be the same as if I started a brand new project file and just imported these 70 WAV files in as audio tracks?   Would there be any left over remnants of the softsynths at all or would it really be like a new project file with just audio tracks?

PS:  I know I can also archive all of them, but I rather just delete the softsynths completely as it effects project-load time.

Thank You!

The best option is If you simply freeze all of your soft synths.

Do this from the synth rack where there's a dedicated Freeze button for each synth.

1 - they will be removed from memory/cpu
2 - you will be working solely with audio tracks
3 - to change any aspect of the midi, just unfreeze, make your changes and re-freeze
4 - load times will decrease significantly

Hello, thanks for the response.
I gave up with freezing softsynths, I have had issues where after a freeze, going back to the soft synth, the synth parameters have changed and now my original sound is gone (not sure why).

Also, i want to be able to work with the audio and manipulate it, so I think pure audio tracks is best, no?

So that still leaves my original question

Then bounce your tracks down to audio, save it as "project audio name" and then delete all the soft synths.  That should run better if you have a 2nd disk drive.

Of course, if you put 70 instances of convolution reverb you'll be back to a dragging project, but otherwise you should be fine.

I can't think why your synth parameters would have changed - I've never had that happen.

Also, if you're prepared to live with forever losing your synths & Midi by deleting it it once converted to audio, then you lose nothing by freezing the synth.

Also, by freezing you WILL be working purely with audio and can manipulate it all you want - it's just another regular audio track.

cool, so deleting the softsynths doesn't leave any remnants?  it would be like as if I never had them in the first place?

I bounce all of my soft synths to audio for live performance, then simply disconnect the Synths using the drop down menu in the synth tab of the browser (just untick synth conected). They are then completely inactive - you can even load the project onto a system without the synths installed without issue. If you need to make any changes, you can just reconnect the synths.

Once I have done this, I save the project as a cakewalk bundle, then reload and save the project as my final performance file . This cleans up all of the unused audio takes etc.

Make your edits, then save the file with a new name.  You can always go back to the original project, if you need to.
