Default settings...Global now Per Project? PROBLEM SOLVED
I recently upgraded from Sonar PE 8.1 to X3 and am now re-learning the Cakewalk software. (Yea I know, right? What a nightmare!) I have 2 questions: #1 It appears that several preferences (such as Recording Mode) that used to be global and permanent once they were set in Global Options are now "Per Project" settings and need to be reset every time you start a new project. Is this correct or am I missing something when trying to permanently set these preferences? #2 I like having all the track controls showing in the track pane while in track view. (It's just something I'm used to and like) However even though I select "All" in the Track Control menu it defaults back to "Custom" after closing and then re-opening a project. Is this just something I need to accept or can I change the default of the Track Control menu? Thanks folks, Pete

The per-project settings are stored in Preferences > Project. Note this section will only appear when a project or template is open. The rest of the settings are global. To store the track header setting, save the project. The setting is retained in the project. Changing this setting does not set the project dirty flag so you need to remember to save the project.

Thanks for responding scook. OK, so... #1 You're saying the Project Preferences must be set each time you start a new project and they can not be set permanently as a default? #2 I'm not comprehending your response to the 2nd question because even though I save the project with the Track Control set to "All" it defaults back to "Custom" every time I re-open the project. Is there no way to set "All" as the default setting for the Track Control? Thanks, Pete

#1 - Create a new project and set all of the per project settings to what you want for defaults. Save it as a project template. Use this new template to create new projects from.

Thanks BobF...Of course...Duhhh!...Sometimes the most obvious answers are the hardest ones for me to figure out. I guess senility/dementia is beginning to set in. LOL Thanks again. However I still can't figure out an answer for my question #2 above. Maybe #2 is something that is specific only to me and my DAW because apparently others are able to set the Track Control to a their desired setting, save the project, and then close the project, and then have the Track Control still set to their desired setting after re-opening the project. Mine continues to default back to "Custom" every time I re-open my project and I have to manually re-set it back to my desired setting. Is this happening to anyone else? Pete

I just checked X3e, and did not see a problem saving the status of All/Custom widget display. Have you applied the "e' update?

Thanks brundlefly No, I have not applied the "e" update. I didn't know there was one. I'll have to look into that. In addition to the update I may have found the source of the problem: I bought a new DAW before installing X3. It has 4 hard drives. C: To be used for programs D: To be used for projects E: To be used for samples F: To be used specifically for East West Quantum Leap samples because it's a huge library. Upon installation of Sonar X3 I selected to install the Cakewalk Content on drive E because that's where I wanted all the samples to be stored. I can now see that Track templates, Project templates etc. are also stored in that Content folder. Even though I mapped the paths in Sonar's file locations to the correct drive and folder I think that having those files on a separate hard drive may be causing problems. So I think I'm going to relocate those folders and then re-map them in Sonar's file location preferences. I'll give it a shot and see what happens.

OK... I downloaded the X3e patch and installed it. I also tried moving around the folders to a different drive and re-mapping them in Sonar's Preferences Folder Locations. It did not fix the problem. However...Since the problem was that the Track Control reverts back to the "Custom" setting every time I re-open a saved project, I simply reconfigured the preferences for the Custom setting using the Track Control Manager. So now, although it still reverts back to the "Custom" setting, all the controls are now visible in the Track Pane when I open the project. So...problem #1 is solved and ...problem #2 is kind of solved

I think that particular project file might be corrupted somehow, possibly due to originating in - or passing through - an earlier version that didn't have track control or wan't writing the flag correctly. Try creating a new project.

thanks brundlefly... but no..it was a new project and I tried creating other projects as well, all having the same result. Now I'm having another similar problem but I'll make a new post about this new problem.

Strange. Maybe time to subscribe to SONAR 2015 while it's on sale.

Problem Solved It has to do with Screensets. Keeping the Track View configurations must be done by saving them as a Screenset. Once you save it as a Screenset and then save the project, it will open again with that screenset. Also, Screensets can not be saved as a template and will have to be re-created each time you start a new project. However you can import screensets from previous projects. So now problem #1 and problem #2 have both been solved. Thanks everyone. Pete

But you can save screensets within a project template.

This shouldn't be an issue, unless there is a problem with the drive. I've been keeping these files & folders away from the system drive for years.

FYI - Having Cakewalk Content on drive E should NOT be a problem. I had mine on D for X3 and now Platinum with no problems whatsoever.
