Latest Sonar Platinum build keeps on crashing (Win7/64bit)

So, yeah, I updated my SONAR to the latest Platinum version just today. I worked on a small-scale project [in comparison to some of the leviathans I can still run on Sonar 8.5.3. without any problems).

The new Platinum worked for a while - the stuff I'm working on is mostly MIDI, 16 tracks of audio, and now, the software keeps on freezing and crashing constantly... It might be related to the new Drum Replace feature? I've checked all possible upgrades and what have you not. All in all, I have to give at least one thumb down for being really so unstable, once again ...

My computer is i7 Core, 16GB RAM, Samsung SSD as the system drive, RME Fireface 800 as the soundcard. Win7, 64-bit.

Here's the problem report:

Yep, even the auto-save backups seem to crash SP. Damn. I open up the project, press play, Sonar crashes with exactly the same error message each time.

Here's a screenshot of Sonar's own application error:

Thanks in advance for all possible help.

There is a confirmed issue whereby the first core of the CPU overloads. If you are using drum maps Sonar may crash (core issue not apparent until drum maps are removed). At least that is what I'm experiencing.

I've rolled back for now. If the issue persists on the next release I will get out my troubleshooting googles, but for now from my perspective there are issues with JP. I let cakewalk know via a thread they participated on, they chose not to follow it up so all I can assume is they have it under control...

Have you tried a memory test program to confirm that there are no ram issues? Sonar may be trying to write to a bad spot memory.

I would expect other apps to crash if there's a memory issue, inc the old version of Sonar. Generally windows throws an exception on a bad write (not SONAR.EXE) or just goes tits up.

Could be antivirus though blocking something...

    Cheers.

Tried disabling the antivirus also, been also trying to run Sonar in compatibility mode for Win7 + as an administrator. Tried using CCleaner, both using it to clean up unnecessary/temporary files and to see if there was anything in the registry that needed fixing. Tried giving my equipment a moment of mercy by powering them off for a while. Tried Windows cmd prompt sfc /scannow, no problems there either. No unwanted/dubious processes are running according to Process Explorer.

So, right now my project has like 10-12 audio tracks, no effects in any of them apart from the Drum Replacement Tool. Around 12 MIDI tracks are in use. The processor, computer temps, memory or any part of the rig is nowhere near significant levels of utilization. I would guess it has to do something with the multitude of MIDI channels going out, and one likely culprit would definitely be the new Drum Replacement tool IMHO.

I've never had any problems using a rackful of MIDI hardware in Sonar 8.5.3 that I've used for years as a steady workhorse in the studio, but judging from some comments that I found online it sure seems that a number of bugs related to the MIDI I/O:s came lurking with Sonar X1. For example: [can't give you the example, since URL's are prohibited ...]

OT: Then again, as far as I can remember, Cakewalk's Sonar software (I've used it since around version 6, 7 ... something like that), they've always just pushed out a new version regardless of the bugs it has and whether they've fixed them at all or not. The first few (2-5) release versions are usually filled with so many bugs that it's incomprehensible. For me, SONAR 8.5.3 Producer Edition has always been _the_ one, I've done countless of albums and other projects with it. When X1 Producer first came out, my inital thougts were that it was a horrible botox-bimbo makeover/botchery of 8.5.3 with not much more to offer than the destruction of the old shortcuts and such key elements in DAW workflow. I did upgrade to X2 Producer, didn't like that much either, and essentially I bought the X3 Producer upgrade just to get some overbloated 8.5.3-projects up'n'runnin' again :D So, a new SONAR version won't work properly straight out of the box - nothing new under the sun to me. :P

Cccleaner registry scanner often causes as many problems and it resolves.

Are you talking about running Sonar in windows compatibility mode? If so that could be your issue, that should be off.

In the case of CCleaner, it depends. I tend to be careful with it, especially with the registry cleaning part - however, the latest registry cleaning that I did after encountering problems with SP, it didn't find any problems.

I've tried Sonar Platinum with and without the compatibility mode, and trying to run it as admin or not. Neither setting or combination of the both didn't change the instability issue one way or the other.

By default, I've used all previous versions of Sonar without any special arrangements, but it could also be because of antivirus software (ESET+Malwarebytes..). Will have to look into it.

BTW: As I pointed out, the tryout project in question is mostly based on simultaneous MIDI outs, I'm running multiple hardware synths in the studio (RME FF800 <-> MOTU Midi Timepiece AV) thru MIDI I/O's. I noticed that every now and then Sonar says that my Midi I/O unit was disconnected. During the past years, I've used around 4-5 different RME soundcards from their HDSP series to Babyface, FF800 & UFX and such, and there's been such random MIDI disconnections in Sonar every now and then. However, the MIDI disconnection problem seems to be more persisting with SP than with any of the previous versions. The sudden disconnections have occurred with various setups and different RME soundcards. Could be related to MIDI clock or DAW/soundcard driver mismatches, but I've never have managed found the exact culprit.

Anyway, thanks a lot for your help and if someone has suggestions on this matter, I'd be grateful. As so kindly pointed out, I think I'll leave the edit rig running Memtest over the night. Cheers!

I'd try renaming (not deleting) the aud.ini file and allow SONAR to generate a new one.

I had a similar crashing problem and Stevec solved it for me.  Renamed aud.ini and problems gone.
