video on Sonar

I have been using my Samsung smartphone camera to record a few songs. I find the music usually comes out without any bass. I realize that part of the problem is that when I play it back, the speakers on the phone have no bass. But even when I play it with headphones, it  doesn't sound right.  Since point and shoot cameras and,  I believe, smartphones don't have a mike input for a better mike, I would have to first buy an SLR camera with mike input (+ a dedicated mike), or buy a video camera with a good mike or mike input. My  question is: could I just simultaneously record the audio on my Sonar X2, and then import the video to my recorded song in  Sonar. I'm never sure what video files are supported by Sonar, and what video files are used on most smartphones.
Thanks.

You will have better luck with video from smartphones in the latest SONAR since it supports MPEG4 and other formats. You can try out the demo if you want to test it.

    Hi,
I guess I should have checked this out on my own, but since Noel Borthwick had this "CTO, Cakewalk" title after his name, I assumed his answer was accurate (though I don't know what "CTO" means.) Since reading this post, I went out and bought an SLR (single lens reflex) camera, since that type of camera had an audio in jack, which can be used to attach a better mike to. The new camera says it  records in "mov" format, so I searched Sonar X3 to see if this file would be supported. I found the following few lines:
First, outlined in the preceding image is the drop-down box Files of type. Making a selection here will determine which video formats are displayed in the dialog box. SONAR supports the following digital video formats:

    Windows Media (.wmv and .asf)

    Video For Windows (.avi)

    MPEG Video (.mpg)

    QuickTime Video (.mov)

Thus, what this says is that Sonar X3 did already support a lot of files, and I prob could have simply used my old camera to record video, while simultaneously recording audio with Sonar. I then could have imported the video onto my Sonar recording. I bought the camera for other reasons, since, of course, it also takes greats still pics and is a nice thing to have. However, it just seems that perhaps Noel was pushing me to update to newer software that I did not need. Just wanted to put this information out here.

    Hello,

In reading Noel's post, not sure if he was pushing .... at all. The version that you referred to was X2 (post 1). Noel (to me) simply was recommending the latest supported version . This makes sense to me. Your post starts by saying that again you were using X2 but then the response to Noel implies that you are using X3. Noel also said to try the Demo first to see how it would work. I do not believe that any software vendor would direct you to use (without good reason) a version other than the most recently supported. Again without good reason I would hope. Thanks.

Thanks for that reply. I see that indeed I did say X2 in my first note. OF course, to me, your answer only makes sense if X2 does not support the type of video that I need. I just looked up documentation for X2 and see that X2 DOES support the importation of 4 different types of video formats. Thus, I believe it shares that characteristic with X3. As far as your assertion that a software vendor would not try to push the latest product version, I'm not sure I agree with that either. This is America, and salespeople everywhere are always saying that we need to buy the latest this, or newest that.
I love this forum and it has been very helpful to me over the years. I have also read that it's one of the best musical related forums around, by far. However, when one gets an answer that may not be accurate, I think it's our job to correct it. I would think it keeps the site true to its purpose. Sort of like a democracy.

Yes you can record the audio in Sonar and then import the video. You will want to look at sample rate and make sure it matches the video's audio sample rate. Normally its 4800 for video.

What Noel was saying is that the latest Sonar 2015 has better video support. This is something you should research. CTO means Chief Technical Officer. He is in charge of all Sonar development. He knows more about Sonar than anyone else.

A very high quality microphone can be connected to a Smartphone. If you are serious about making decent recordings this is the only way to go. The existing internal mic on a smartphone is not in this league.

It is stereo too. Start by getting things right at the source!

Just re read your OP and did not realise you are using a Samsung phone. Sorry for the confusion. The Rode is for the iphone of course. But for those who do have an iphone or if you were thinking of changing over at some point it is good to know that a decent microphone can be connected to it.

My response was based on the fact that you said you had X2. X2 supports quicktime through a special directshow filter that only works in 32 bit mode. X3 and higher have media foundation support for video that supports a lot of codecs such as MP4. Quicktime is also supported in 64 bit Windows which is new.
If you already have X3 you should be able to load your video's in SONAR.
