"Lady Luck" (Rock) Second Mix 11/20/15

"Lady Luck" (Rock)

NOTE: Second Mix Up - 11/20/15

Thanks for all your input so far, guys!

For this second mix, I freshened up the EQ on the bass with a little more high-mids after Jesse's suggestion (hope the volume level is still okay), and took Guitarpima's advice and added some quiet, clean Rickenbacker 12-string arpeggios to the second bridge after the guitar solo.

Greatly appreciate you guys checking it out!

Major thanks!
Bob

Me first! Like the roulette wheel sample Bob . Trademark huge, greasy riff here, got my head bobbing straight away. Love that change up into the pre-chorus (very cool after the short solo) and the descending riff into the hook, nice piece of arranging. Great effect right at the end too, like a stuck CD, like it! All sounding good to me on first listen, a worthy addition to a new album(?).

Nice rocker! My suggestion would be to add do some clean chord arpeggios during the second section where you  way "shine the light". Maybe a sound like Def Leppard uses in Bringing on the Heartbreak. Just to add another layer. The change from the solo back to the reprise of the second section seems weird to me but that's just subjective.

    Well done!

Notation, the original DAW. Everything else is just rote. We are who we are and no more than another. Humans, you people are crazy.

Hello Mr. Bob, I really appreciate the quantity that you are able to produce.  Not only do you produce a lot, but you produce quality goods.

I really like the use of the roulette wheel sound at the beginning.  I like the organ that drops in around 1:50.  Your chops on the guitar are tasty.  I definitely like the layers.  Nice and crunchy sound.  Are you using sims or micing it up?  What axe are you using?

The change at 2:25 is cool.

I also like the laid back nature of the drums, not to busy at all, just right there.  I did notice a weird timing thing at :35, it sounds like the drummer was waiting for something to happen.  It does add a very live feel to it.  I noticed it again at around 3:00, but I like it.

I really like the way the guitars come in off the vocals at 1:58.

I know this is a 128 mp3, so the sound is not the pristine one that you are saving for later.  For some reason it seems I always recommend turning up the vocals and backing off the effects on the vox.  I wonder what would happen if you tried this here?
The bass seems to be lost a little, but I like a little more slap in my bass, or a little more organic sound so that is just me being me.

How far along do you think you are with this track?  Do you plan on making a lot of changes or are you pretty happy with the arrangement , choice of effects settings, and mix?

Nice work, I imagine you heard this before, but your band reminds me of Robin Trower.

Thanks for this, you have given me a lot to think about.

    Hi, James,

Thank you, good sir, I really appreciate your input and kind words!

Yep, I was sort of trying to go for a slightly "modernized' Deep Purple/Whitesnake vibe on this one, after getting home from one of our local casinos at about 4:00 in the morning, and this all fell into place in a little over two hours or so.  Sometimes you get lucky!

Big thanks, James, I'm always grateful for your input, observations and ideas on my stuff, truly appreciated, my friend!

    Have a good one, James!

Yes, Sir, for this second mix, I took your suggestion and added a clean Rickenbacker 12-string doing some quiet arpeggios to the second bridge that comes in after the guitar solo.  I'm hoping I've got the levels right and they blend in okay without sticking out too much.

Big thanks for the good idea, and for taking time to listen and comment, greatly appreciated!

    Have a good one!

I only heard the 2nd mix and this was really nicely performed & mixed. I'm always impressed with your very clean vocal recordings........truly a fantastic job!!! Of course, when the guitars come in, it simply rocks to a nice groove with beautiful tone selections.

    Hey Mr. Bob,

I'm listening to this mix from your site as I type.  The bass has more presence.  Nice job, sure wish I could make adjustments like that.

I still like that organ in there.

Nice work, a very solid effort.  I didn't mention last time that I like the ending too.

Listening to "Falling Faster" right now.  I can see I'm going to have to chime in on that one when I get some time.

    Thanks for the inspiration!

    Hi, Jesse,

Thanks so much for taking time to give this a listen, and for your good observations and encouraging comments!

LOL, Yep, I’ve been kind of hammering the forum with song posts lately, because I’m trying to make up time for a really long six or seven month break from recording and producing, due to a super busy real life work schedule.  I usually only get to record and mix once or maybe twice a week at around 2:30 or 3:00 in the morning for an hour or possibly two at a time, so I tend to try to work really fast on my stuff.

Although I spent my whole life since thirteen years old playing out in a multitude of live rock and metal bands, there’s actually no band on my original stuff, it’s all just me playing and singing everything by myself.

As for the gear used on this one, even though I still have four “real” amps of various sizes and wattages, because of my recording mainly in the middle of the night, I always use POD Farm 2.5.  On this song, I used a customized virtual rig with a Cornford and a Marshall JCM 800, and the guitar was my Line 6 Variax with a Les Paul Junior dialed in.

I’m really glad that you like the drum track on this, because the drums are always the hardest thing for me, and I tend to screw them up a lot because I’m really a just guitar player forced to try to work out drum parts to sound like what I’m hearing in my head.  I just bang around on my Yamaha drum pads or my midi controller until I get something close to what I want for the main Kick, Snare and Hi-hats, then quantize the living daylights out of the parts and add my drum fills and cymbal crashes after the fact.  LOL, as the guys here on the forum can attest, many times I end up with a crazy, horrible, off-time swing and a miss, and once in a great  while I get lucky with the drums!

For this second mix, I took your good suggestion and beefed up the high-mids on the bass just to add a touch more presence, which I think worked out well, so thanks very much for your observations and input.

I see you’re fairly new to the forum, and I think you’re going to really like it here.  The song forum members are a really talented and helpful bunch of people, and it’s amazing how much can be learned from just experimenting and trying out some of the generous ideas, input, observations and suggestions that the members here offer on a regular basis.  I actually put a shout-out thank you comment to the forum members in the liner notes of my first two Cds, and will definitely be adding one again to this next CD that I’ll be releasing soon.  For me, this place is an invaluable tool for getting better at this stuff!

I also loved your Robin Trower comment, I was lucky enough to see him in concert twice way back when he first hit the U.S., and we did “Day of the Eagle” and “Too Rolling Stoned” off of Bridge of Sighs in a few of my cover bands over the years!

Thanks again, Jesse, I truly appreciate you listening to my stuff and commenting, it’s what makes this place so great!

Have a Rockin’ weekend, my friend!
    Bob

Hello Mr. Bob, It's folks like you that keep me coming back.  I wish for you to have more time recording.  I love your enthusiasm and prolific creating.

Thanks for the notes on your background and equipment that you used.  It just goes to show that the possibilities are infinite.  The notes on your life give the song more depth to me.  Now I know something about you and that always seems to make it more personal.

If my suggestions were of any help to you then that is great.  I did notice the eq adjustments, and I'm not sure how much you went in and tweaked, but whatever you did not only brought the bass forward, but it also seemed to make the guitar stand out better.

    Keep rocking Bob.

    Bless you

I'm also grateful that you also took time to check out "Falling Faster" on my Test Mix page, too.

Your first comment on the bass was a very good observation that made me want to take a closer look at the bass EQ and try to wring a little more presence out of it, and that really helped.  It's always so easy to get immune to minor blemishes in a mix after hearing it over and over again while working on it.  So, I always try to pick up on what the people commenting are hearing, and then adjust things from there to see what happens.

Thanks a bunch, Jesse, and have a great week!

This mix is punchy as usual, but seems a bit "bigger" than some of your recent tunes.  Could be me of course...   Anyhow...  cool song, great playing, nice hook, and as always, the vocals rock!!   Solid.

Yeah, I was going for sort of a thickened up, modernized classic rock vibe on this, not sure if it ended up that way, but, as I mentioned to James up above, it was thrown together quickly after a long night at one of our local casinos, LOL!
