IK - New Mic Room Software

http://www.ikmultimedia.com/products/trmicroom/

Introducing Mic Room for T-RackS

Re-mike your recordings with a virtual collection of over 20 stunning studio microphones

Mic Room is a powerful microphone-modeling tool for T-RackS that puts a world-class collection of over 20 classic and contemporary microphones at your fingertips. It gives you the power to process and "re-mike" your physical microphones to sound and perform like some of the most coveted microphone models of all time from ribbons to dynamics to condensers and beyond. It also offers a plethora of inspiring tone-sculpting tools that are conveniently ready for use in your favorite DAW.

Top Sound quality

Mic Room offers an astonishing level of detail and accuracy, each of its virtual microphone models boasts the true frequency response, nuanced character and specific sound of its counterpart. That means you can tap into the harmonic complexity of tube condensers, the "in-your-face" tone of dynamics and velvety smoothness of ribbon types. You can even fuel your creativity with Mic Room's quirkier options, like tube and telephone microphones.

Endless possibilities

Mic Room lets you effortlessly change the sonic profile of recorded audio to match the signature of a chosen microphone. Want to transform a dynamic into a condenser? A condenser into a ribbon? Well, Mic Room is a T-RackS module, so you can slap it onto an individual track (either inside T-RackS or as a standalone plug-in) and then change recorded audio from vocals and miked instruments and amplifiers. Once on a track, Mic Room lets you choose the original source microphone and then a new microphone to re-mike it with, so you can harness a new level of nuance, color and tonal character.

Creative tone control

Beyond its high-fidelity sound, Mic Room also comes packed with a number of additional tone control features that have been designed to enhance your recording experience. The Proximity effect less you play with the "proximity effect" that naturally adds bass when a source is near a microphone. Dial it in for a rich and deep "FM radio vocals" sound. Or dial it down to scoop the low frequencies out. The Harmonic control effect gives you the full power and rich harmonic complexity of a tube condenser. This control lets you add saturation, character and texture to your recordings.

Plug and play

Though Mic Room for T-RackS can liven up the character of any microphone, it works best when paired with iRig Mic Studio, iRig Pro DUO, iRig PRO, iRig Mic HD, iRig Mic and other quality microphones and interfaces from IK Multimedia.

Pricing and availability

Mic Room is available now via the IK online store and T-RackS Custom Shop for just $/€69.99* (or just 70 Gear Credits).

Some of you may be old enough to remember a wacky product that used to be hawked on late-night TV, a plastic magnifier you attached to the front of your television to make it look bigger.

That's what comes to mind when I think about "microphone modelers".

Mic Modeler EFX does a surprisingly good job.  It's like an amp sim...it's
not 100% of course...but it CAN make your mic sound better then it really
is...This is cheaper, and has a kewl interface...

But you can see where it's going...buy add on Mics..blah blah blah...etc...etc...

Lets examine those  "mic modelers" that have come before this one
the Antares, which Larry mentioned, all with all due respect to him, was snake oil
the Waves Kings Microphone really?
Slate has his mic modeler thing but it couples with a real mic..

so you can model a hardware compressor/eq/fx cause there is a certain amount of control over the  range 1s and 0s or AC fluctuating signals going thru said real hardware with relation to the modeling..

microphones, on the other hand .. so you model the frequency and plot of a highly prized German mic.
with what audio source?

I have an 18 y/o chick singer in the studio, or the Bass singer from the Oak Ridge Boys, or a mixed choir, yadda yadda yadda..so I engage the "model" hows it better with my particular source than the Bluebird mic I picked for the singer?

Isn't ALL of this just "snake oil"?

These plugins, while "close" are no where near what the REAL deal is...
Amp sims are nowhere NEAR what the real deal is...
Console Emu's are nowhere NEAR what the real is...

It's all basically "snake oil"...the question is...does it come close
and make the sound better...

I say it it does...I've used it...

Is it going to turn your AT 2020 to a Neuman?  Nope...but it will
sorta make it sound like it...just like the Marshall 900 Amp Sim is
going to "sorta" make it sound like it...

That's all I'm saying...

Mic Room for T-RackS couples with multiple real mics too.  You can use an affordable mic like iRig Mic Studio, or any of the modeled microphones' real-world counterparts (a couple/few are reasonably-priced home studio staples).  Even buying ours or one of the reasonably-priced mics we've modeled + Mic Room at $69.99 will set you back a lot less than the grand the option you mention would.

Of course many people would rather have a mic that costs thousands of dollars, and we're certainly not going to replace the massive mic lockers at studios across the world but Mic Room can be an excellent tone-shaping tool for a pretty reasonable price.

That's how Mic Modeler EFX works also..

You select your SOURCE real world mic...and then your
OUTPUT "Modeled" Mic..

Same concept....

It's the Ron Popiel Pocket Mic Modeler. "It puts hair on your vocals". When you open up the box it's a can of that baldo, spray on hair. Now I'm just playing around ubiquitous IK guy, I have no reason to think yours isn't a fine product.

Actually not always the case...that's the reason so many go to GREAT EXTREMES to
eliminate the ROOM...so they can add that later...that's the intent of a vocal booth...
eliminate the room sound...

And usually the magic IS the mic...it's combination of well designed circuits and/or tubes
and the way the dia-frag-me is done...all play a roll...

Then you add the preamps, the consoles, the outboard effects...and that's when the magic
happens.  The BEST thing is to have a GOOD CLEAN TRACK from the start...

But, yes...if it sounds good, it's good...

One fellers snake oil is quite often just not being able to hear subtle differences. Sometimes very subtle. But that's what makes a horse race. And, of course, it's also true that quite often that ol emperor is as neckkid as a jay bird. Pick em.

Good answer.

So which mic modeler do you use?  I reckon those Earthworks mikes are just too darn expensive, but if I can make my SM57 sound like one, then that should be just as good. I'm not sure where the frequencies above 15KHz are gonna come from, but I reckon that's the "mojo" at work, right?

Welp...like our pal Larry, I think it is pretty easy to hear that the Antares MicModeler makes a noticeable difference in the recorded mic "tone". In fact, if you can't hear the difference, I'd recommend a good "listening" course. That said, the difference that MicModeler makes is totally subjective as to whether it is "better" or "worse". Therein lies the problem and/or horse race. By in large it imparts a "warm saturation" on cheaper mics which might or might not be needed or appropriate for the project at hand. Personally, I'll use whatever I can to get my instrument or vocal tracks to sound just how I want them...front end or back end. Warm, full and fat to strident, harsh and distorted...the tools are available...you just have to know HOW to use them. And then USE THEM. YMMV.

Is it possible to save 70 bucks and get ballpark on plugs like this, by chaining an: impulse generator into a phase filter into a verb? Of course you would have to double the chain, split panning and adjust settings to attempt to emulate different mics and different distances. But just curious, as I can't see how they would be re-treating already captured audio with any kind of spectacular fairy dust?

I hear ya.  Or maybe I don't...
A few weeks back, I was sitting in a friend's home studio, and he was badmouthing the upcoming Mic Modelling thingie from Slate, calling it ridiculous.  I pointed to his Focusrite Liquid Channel and asked him why he thought Focusrite's modelling was credible but Slate's wasn't?  He actually laughed, 'cause he didn't have an answer.
