How to create / assign automation envelopes for Kontakt?

Sorry if this is something so basic ... at least that's what I hope it is ...Usually I have no problems creating and assigning envelopes. To automate an effect in Platinum (Hopkinton) -- for example, the ProChannel EQ-- I'll add an effects lane, and then in the drop down choose the EQ, and then in the sub-list I can see a full list in English of the automatable parameters. Ditto with an instrument, like Addictive Keys. This is how it should be.

But if it's Kontakt 5 (latest version), well, I do see Kontakt in the drop down, but that leads to a sub-list which is just numbers, from 0-511, in batches of 28, which only reveal further sub-lists of single values. No text at all ;-/

Am I missing something? I'd suspect so, as Kontakt libraries brim with midi-learnable parameters, there to be automated.

While I can automate Kontakt parameters with my midi controller keyboard, I don't always have that with me (it's big) and so would like to be able to create and assign envelopes just with a mouse.

Can anyone advise?

Grateful as ever for any help.

Hi. Are you using SIT (Simple Instrument Track) or MIDI and Audio Track (the latest with Kontakt 5 inserted as Soft Synth)? If so, try to right click, and choose Split Instrument Track. Then use the MIDI track for Kontakt 5 automation. Hope it helps.
Best of luck.

Thanks Zargg, but I don't quite follow "If so" -- which condition are you referring to?

Yes, it is a simple instrument track. A midi clip in a midi track is feeding it. I've never used VSTis including Kontakt any other way in Sonar.  Then again I'm still relatively new to some aspects of Sonar.

Actually , hold on ... I'm back home and can now read up a bit on what you describe.  I'll update. Thanks again.

Just try to right click in the empty space in Track View (somewhere), and choose split...
Best of luck.

Ps. If so (in this context) means if you are.
All the best.

Sorry again ... It means I am ... which one ?  Using a simple instrument track or not? I'm asking an either / or question, and you are answering "Yes" ;-)

I am also not sure exactly where and under which conditions I am supposed to be seeing what you say when I right-click, because I do not see it

I'm not trying to be slow but I don't follow you.

Do you know for a fact that what you suggest I investigate fixes the problem? Or is it just something you think might fix it?

I've just checked Scott's book, didn't see anything about this. I'll check the manual.

Ok, I think need to read the 20 pages starting on page 967 of the manual

This has nothing to do with Simple Instrument Tracks - lingyai obviously has access to Kontakt parameters in the automation lane's edit filter menu - you don't need to split a SIT in order to access the synth's automation parameters.

Lingyai - I think what's going on here is that you are trying to automate a Kontakt instrument that doesn't expose any of its parameters to Sonar. Try loading up something from the Kontakt Factory Library - you'll see that named parameters are provided for these instruments, or indeed anything else by Native Instruments. With 3rd party instruments however, it's pretty much hit and miss whether it exposes the parameter names to Sonar.

If this is the case, you need to assign parameters for automation within Kontakt. It's really quite easy.

The panel on the left hand side should have a tab labeled "Auto" - click on it. Here you can assign which parameters you wish to expose to Sonar. You will see the empty slots arranged into rows in the panel. Click on one of them and drag across to the control you wish to assign on the instrument, then let go. You'll see the name of that control appear in the "assigned to" row in the panel, and you should now be able to see it in the automation menu in Sonar.

Re: How to create / assign automation envelopes for Kontakt? 2015/11/27 19:34:37 (permalink)
Yes, every button, knob and slider in Kontakt is automatable, both built-in controls and those that are specific to the instrument. It's a matter of telling Kontakt which parameter you want to automate and what MIDI CC number you'll be using to do it, and then creating a MIDI automation envelope on your MIDI track that's also assigned to that same CC number.

Not as straightforward as other plugins, which present you with a tidy list of automatable parameters, but still not too difficult - once you've done it once. Kontakt does it this way because there can be literally hundreds of automatable parameters, different for each instrument, so Kontakt generalizes the process for any control on any instrument.

If you tell us specifically what instrument you're using and what parameter you want to automate, we can give you specific step-by-step instructions.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

Hi Bitflipper, sorry, for some reason I didn't get an email that you'd replied.

Thanks. In this case I'm using Soniccouture's Imogen Heap's Box of Tricks. However it is sorted now, though I'm slightly puzzled as to why.

When I wrote the OP, the problem was as described. I then followed the advice to click on the "Auto" tab and actually saw that it had a list if pre-named English parameters. I didn't have to assign anything. I went back to the automation lane for the Kontakt synth track, and in the drop-down list ... boom, no more meaningless numbers, rather, I could now see the same list of English parameter as I saw in Kontakt.

Happy ending, though I don't really understand why it happened. I swear I was looking in the same place! Maybe my seditious nephew spiked our turkey stuffing which some special herbs , dunno...
