OK I bit the bullet and picked up a Black Friday Dell lap top w Win 10 on it
It's not like I have money to throw around , I sure don't , but I felt that this was my best approach rather than messing around with my current Windows 8 computer …it seems to be running like a champ knock on wood . My plan is to get familiar with Windows 10 in a somewhat safe environment ( a new beater computer that cost peanuts ) and decide if I will eventually port over to Win 10 on my main Win 8 .0 computer … I am doing this reluctantly , by that I mean I have no idea if I'm even gonna be able to set this thing up even though this thing already came with Win 10 on it … I have no idea what I will have to compromise on regarding how to set this thing up to where it is usable ….That is in part due to my lack of experience as a computer tech , and on another level it seems to me that a majority of the people here that have made the jump seem to be in separate camps ..Some folks love it …some folks have rolled back … I won't have the option to roll back , so if any one here cares to point out some threads of posts that would be helpful I would appreciate the suggestions … My short game is I haven't even plugged it in yet ….I figure before I do that I would ask for help here.Maybe gain a few pointers My long game would be once I have it set up I was planning on running an install of SONAR X3 from my disks and leaving out the third party stuff that need me to put their license apps on my computer ..stuff like Addictive drums and Melodyne I don't need that stuff on this computer ..I just want to get a feel to see if i can be comfortable going there sorry for the wordiness , thanks in advance Kenny

Prediction: You'll be entirely happy with Windows 10, which is a major improvement from Windows 8, and you'll be used to it within a week or less. I usually find with a new OS that I spend a few days being slightly confused by a handful of things that aren't where they used to be, after which I've entirely forgotten about the old OS.

Honestly hope that you are right sharke . I didn't care much for 8 at all , it took me a long time to warm up to it . In Win 8 I kept upgrading my software applications and third party plugs to where I seem to have gotten to the point where if I can get behind Windows 10 on my main computer I will probaly have a nice little setup once I make the jump thank you Kenny

@dlesaux Over the years I've heard many people on this forum speak of Win 7 as a truly great Windows OS . I feel sort of sad that I missed Windows 7 . In my journey , I went from XP to OSX Lion and then eventually wound up with Win 8 … Thank you for the kind words of encouragement …. ampfixer Holy Crap! They got Kenny!
Hey John , Yes, it's true , they got me … I have been conflicted about this switch in OS for a long time . So far the past few hours have been good . Mustered up the stones to turn the computer on and set it up . I have to say I'm surprised at how much I'm enjoying Windows 10 so far . I think it was a smart move for me to have left my main computer on 8 and do my little experiment on a blank slate where I would have nothing to loose or have to reconfigure . thanks , cclarry

Hey, cclarry , I resemble that remark i was doing my best to hold out for a B F deal or two . It seemed that everything that was on sale that I wanted was way out of my wallets comfort zone . Yeah , I'm liking 10 so far much better than 8 .. Now watch all the good deals are gonna come down after I spent my all years worth of coffee can saved loose change the good news is , at least I can always do the monthly plan on SONAR once I get used to 10 Kenny

Live and Learn , I had tried the same drivers I had for Win 8 for my 2i4 (Since I had the installer saved on an external HD …) OH man , I was worried there for a while because I could have won a Grammy for The Best Rice Crispy's Up Close and Personal Sound Track It took a bit of jumping through hoops to get my 2i4 working properly in Win 10 . Thankfully Focusrite had current drivers for it .. Still trying to figure it out because the control panel for the 2i4 drivers in Win 10 only seems to be showing a slider . Nothing else appears to be showing up . I'm like how do I set it to ASIO ? Kenny

I went from XP to 8. Installed 10 last night on my StudioCat computer, and has been nothing but great. Glad to "lose" the MS fly in windows that was in 8, that you got when sweeping the cursor off the screen edge. They'd pop up all the time when I got close to the edge of the TV or CS screens in Sonar. I have had NO issues with 10. Doing wife's computer as I type.

@mixmkr , It sounds like I took the same OS path as you . XP to 8 to 10 . Wow ! you have a StudioCat computer , that must be nice . Yeah , that fly out window on a 15 inch laptop LOL . I was getting tagged on the right constantly by it. Between that and all the nagging Win 8 put me through, I felt like the ghost of somebody's else's mother in law decided to move in and haunt me through my computer . Already , even on this consumer grade lap top I picked up , I like Windows 10 much better than Windows 8 . I'm having a really good time w Win 10 . So far , I put a lot of my lighter musical applications that I use for study on it . Stuff like BIAB , Transcribe , and a few other music programs that I use all the time any way … Have a good one , it was nice rapping with you , Kenny

Hello Zo , According to the type of information put forth in this presentation , I would venture to say yes . A great deal of the Win 10 push could be because "Folks " for lack of a better term at all levels of the music business are trying to get ahead of the loop to level the playing field concerning improving Windows way of handling audio . BTW, Cakewalk gets mentioned numerous times in the video . http://www.synthtopia.com/content/2015/07/29/windows-10-promises-better-audio-midi-performance-easier-app-development/ As far as me personally goes , I have my reasons to at least try to keep an open mind . A big one is I wanted to find out for myself if I could Gell with Win 10 . It was very important for me to do it in a totally safe way where I would have nothing to loose . Over the course of time I had noticed a lot of guys on the forum were making the jump to 10 , some where happy , some were having problems and rolling back . I was not willing to take that chance on the only Windows computer I own that will run all my current music software that's PC only . I had become overly protective of my one computer with Win 8 . It had X3 and a ton of expensive music software applications on it and it took me a couple of years to get that sucka running to where I was happy ..lol Picking up the Black Friday Dell helped give me the freedom to try something new and take a chance .Because of that safety net I felt comfortable enough to upgrade to SPlat and install it on my Win 8 machine minus the updated 3rd party stuff . The Win 10 machine also has SPlat on it now (minus the 3 rd party stuff ), it is obvious that I will probably hit a brick wall on the Win 10 machine when I push it …I'm OK with that , in the mean time I can use it to learn the new features in SPlat and use it for the net … all the best , Kenny

Thanks for the info Ham N Egz Zo , I don't think it would even be fair to try and compare or evaluate the performance differences between your Win 8 i 7 Dell to my consumer grade Win 10 lap top . It may be a good idea for you to find someone on the forum with a closer spec machine to yours running Win 10 . I feel that will give you a better idea . Having said that , I was surprised to find out that after installing SPlat on my way under spec'd Dell Win 10 computer that it was able to open up some former projects that I have done and run 35 tracks of mostly audio ,there was no heavy lifting or heavy CPU plugs or synths were involved . That one got me by surprise considering that I had kept my expectations pretty low and I would have just been happy to have been able to use the machine to learn the new features in SPlat and surf the web .... all the best Kenny
