Blinded and Blue
Looking for constructive crits. Any "cringe moments"? https://soundcloud.com/m_glenn_m/blinded-blue-dec-015 Also what genre would you call this? I can't seem to judge my own stuff. Thanks in advance guys. (Updated per suggestions Dec 1)

My constructive critique as requested. The guitar work is great. I like the clean sounds. You vocal is fine. What did you do with the vocals, at 2:00 they sound layered to me. I think the bass and the percs at the beginning are a little busy. It took me about thirty seconds to get into the groove. Maybe it was the reverb on the guitar that was covering up those sounds, can't really say without seeing what you processed it with. I think the opening might be better served by building the percs in slowly. What you do around 2:20 might work well at the beginning too. I like the tune, thanks for posting. Jesse

Great guitar sounds! Really nice mix. I don't hear anything I'd cringe over at all. Really like the fill licks you spin out, very tasty stuff. Cool song too with a really nice chorus. I agree with Jesse's comments on the opening part, but if you're committed to the way it is, I'd consider bringing a bit more punch to lay down the groove by maybe bumping the bass up a bit, or rework the part to provide some percussive reference. All in all, though, a really nice track with a really interesting vocal treatment. Great work!

Really, really good things going on here. A bit of Mark Knopfler’s Hill Farmers Blues atmosphere (although it doesn’t sound like that tune at all – it hits me hard like that song does). This is awesome. I love it. Absolutely wonderful job. Looping it and listening over and over. Once in a while you hear something that just pushes your buttons – this is one of those tunes.

Ha ha - I am laughing - "feel good comment" - dude, it's a really wonderful song - you don't need me or anyone else to tell you that (or I guess it validates it on some level). Enjoy the fact that you've written something that resonates with others - what a joy!

Well thanks again. Truth is, this is the first song I've written for a long time. I thought I'd lost the muse, so this IS validating. Seeing as I don't sell my songs, this is as good as it gets for me. So glad you liked it.

Hi Glenn, the song is good, well written and a good idea followed through. The mix sounds odd to me though. Everything is very brittle, and those nice guitar licks disappear to nothing every time they go under the vocal - sounds like you've perhaps overdone the volume automation then compressed the whole thing too much. Feels like the song needs to breathe, it's definitely worth it.

Thanks James I did "duck" the guitars under the Vox. Perhaps overdone? My wife was complaining the guitars were muddying up the vox. Perhaps it's a matter of degree? The brittle is a common crit I get, perhaps due to my age where highs (and lows) are disappearing for me, so I tend to boost them. I forgot to check with a master analyser. The overall waveform doesn't look too compressed to me, so the ducking is probably the culprit. Thanks again. https://dl.dropboxusercon...683934/wave%20form.jpg

Yes, I think so Glenn. It sounds un-natural to me, and distracts from the song somewhat. It gives the illusion of the track 'pumping' which made think it had been over-compressed. If those nice fills were mixed down a little they'd sit with the vocals OK without the tail end of each one disappearing completely, like at 0:43 and 1:14 for example.. Still a good song though.

Thanks James I could also use a softer knee on the ducking comp.

Real nice sounding tones and musicianship. Certainly nothing cringe worthy, but I did find the quick volume change on the guitars to be a tad distracting. Pristine sounding mix though.
