Windows 10 and lots of POPS!

Hey guys:
Just upgraded to Windows 10 and all of a sudden I'm getting pops a plenty with projects that ran fine under Windows 7.  So far I've:
1. Updated my Roland Quad Capture drivers.
2. Disabled McAfee anti-virus.
3. Disabled onboard sound cards.
4. I would disable wifi but can't figure out how to.  Ditto with Windows Defender.

Anything else I might try?

Thanks!

    Hey Jude!

    1. I just wrestled with this.  Try going through your projects and silencing various soft synths (if that's what you're using and that's what's popping).  My problem was KONTAKT.  Not sure the reason for this cuz I'm not much of a computer whiz.

    2. Of course check your buffers.  Experiment with settings under preferences in Sonar and the settings on your asio panel.  Win 10 was  supposed to streamline audio handling so it was  an improvement, not a step back updating to win 10.

    3.  The easiest way to see problems is to get dpc latency checker http://www.thesycon.de/deu/latency_check.shtml
See what's causing the page faults and that's your problem.

Thanks for the fast reply.  I'll definitely check on Kontakt since it's on almost every project.

    Again, many thanks!

No I think it is because WIn 10 is updating a lot of stuff in the background.
Just be patient. Nothing else, WIn 10 is faster and has lower latency than previously.

Dan Le thats a very insightful point. It may fully account for the poor performance the OP is seeing.

Try and get that wi-fi shut down as it's a known trouble maker. Leave windows defender alone. Many people are using it and have found no issues. Also remember that the upgrade to win 10 will change lots of services in the background and won't necessarily honour the preferences you used to have. It turned on many things that I had turned off such as the onboard audio and audio drivers related to the video card I have.

You guys are all making excellent points.  I'll leave my computer on for a few days and let Windows do it's thing as well as check and see if any new processes are running.

kitekrazy1: good question.  Buffer is set at 2048 samples/42.7 msec.  It's the max my drivers will go.

Thanks to every one of you!!

I've bad experiences having them set too high. Best solution is to revert back to W7 if possible.  I haven't come across high end users claim W10 is better.  I have it on a legacy system and really haven't play with any of the DAWs on it.  I'm afraid to have my new builds run W10.

    Hey Jude,

    Go here:  http://www.sweetwater.com/sweetcare/articles/solving-dpc-latency-issues/

if you have latency with usbport.sys (which I did) and you have a multi card reader attached (which I did) try disconnecting it.  It'll work! Also, I think new Win 10 installs automatically index your drives. Go to drive properties and turn indexing off.   Finally, turn Cortana off.

This is a great recommendation for Windows 7, not as useful for 8, 8.1 or 10.  It runs and the readings are relatively correct but are too high by a thousand.  They know it and still haven't released an update.

A good alternative, also free, is Latency Monitor.

Only use the free Latency Mon on Win 10.  It has been updated for Win 10.

I have been using Win 10 for a long time as I'm in the "insider program" which gets me pre-release versions. I haven't had any problems and even have lower, reliable, latency settings with my Roland Octa-Capture (and Studio-Capture) than I could use with Win 7 or Win 8/8.1.

With Win 7 and 8/8.1 I could use the 6 ms latency setting.  With Win 10 I can use the 4 ms latency setting.

Remove video card drivers and let the video card run on stock MS drivers.

Whenever I wrote an email or an article, I found the cursor would lag, which signaled to me that my data input was being recorded. I should mention that data input in Windows 10 is recorded for various reasons - one of them being to make Cortana useful. Since I don't use Cortana and because I hate a laggy cursor, I decided to do a bit more research to see if I could find a program that could disable Windows 10 tracking and have the ability to undo the changes if necessary.

    Hi Guys:

For what it's worth I had a project I had to get finished so I reverted back to Windows 7 for the time being (if you don't know, after you update from an older OS to W10 you have a month to revert back).  I'm sure down the road I'll try W10 again.

Sincere thanks to EVERYONE who tried to help me.  I appreciate you all!!

Allow me to contradict sorry. I've done multiple windows 10 installs and the stock drivers are pretty crappy. Most were rushed out for win10. Update to the latest from AMD's or Nvidias site (or whatever it is). Make sure you do clean custom installs, and just install the driver itself.

I had an issue (prob posted on here, Win 10) where I noticed pops and clicks on my renders.  THEN upon closer listening, they did not occur at the same point in the recording... I looked at the waveform in detail, put markers on a track when I heard a noise, tried different players and concluded that my system was causing it in random places. Still working on it but now that I know it is not my recordings, I can live with it.   Focusrite has a list on their site about reducing artifacts and playback noise.
