I need a mentor

I have a school project where i'm gonna write songs and record them on sonar professional over the next few months. I need a mentor to teach me how sonar works. If you are interested, i will need your real name. Three of our conversations will be printed out so I can prove that I actually have a mentor. Reply soon if you're interested. Thanks in advance!

Ed's just the guy. But he'll want a percentage. Just half of your "A" should do it. Offer him a "C" and a stick-on gold star.

Seriously, though, what's your objective? Do you want to learn SONAR well enough to create a project, or just want to know how records are made with a computer?

You can also use "Flat Reading Mode" in the upper right of the forum page to print out forum threads, so can easily take advantage of multiple people contributing. You could fly that one by your instructor as well, or give him or her a guilt trip... "Am I limited to only one mentor? What if I choose the wrong one??? "

It would definitely help to know the scope of your project. If you can and decide to use the forum, a nice descriptive post title with a detailed question in the body will get a lot of feedback for you (and easily printed or even linked).

ASUS ROG Maximus X Hero (Wi-Fi AC), i7-8700k, 16GB RAM, GTX-1070Ti, Win 10 Pro, Saffire PRO 24 DSP, A-300 PRO, plus numerous gadgets and gizmos that make or manipulate sound in some way.

My objective is really to know how to use SONAR well enough to make songs for my project. I'll handle the writing process by myself, but i need someone to teach me how SONAR works.

You need to decide very quickly whether you want to work with Audio, Midi or both.

I definitely want to use Midi (I have a keyboard for that), but I don't know if I'm also going to sing and record that. I think I might use both.

A lot of the processing and effects you'll probably want to use on synths/samplers are the ones used for working with audio, because while the synths are triggered by MIDI instructions telling them what to play they output to audio tracks. Things like compression, eq, delay, reverb etc. are applied to audio rather than MIDI.

So if I were you I'd anticipate using both MIDI and audio even if you don't need to record audio.

Assorted real synths, guitars, mandolins, diatonic accordions, percussion, fx and other stuff.

Next question: do you want a mentor or a tutor? The difference is the former is someone you can turn to for advice or to get you out of a jam. There are a few thousand of them on this forum, all willing to help.

A tutor, OTOH, is a private instructor who walks you through everything from the basic concepts on through advanced techniques. You'll have a harder time enlisting the latter because it's a major commitment. I believe that's why you haven't had a lot of responses to your thread: folks are afraid that's what you're looking for.

If you're starting at zero, you may not be ready yet for a mentor. What have you accomplished so far on your own?

IF you want a tutor maybe you should start with Karl's SWA videos and a month or two subscription to Groove3. Keni is a good helper too. He puts out albums that sound pretty darn good using Sonar and what came with it. He has also been involved with some pretty high powered music people. I like him and he is easy going. He helps me along. Keeps me from getting in the weeds.

    Good luck with it.

I need a mentor (according to bitflipper's definition). I can watch tutorial videos to learn how to use sonar, but I'll still ask for advice if needed. I already made one song with sonar. It doesn't have any effects, but it's pretty good.
