"The Stars At Night" v2
Many thanks for the helpful ideas on this one! Absolutely great forum! Lower voice lowered so the vocal is less weird. Snare lowered, drums panned, sparkly bits brought out more. All good suggestions! Any comments are very welcome, particularly if you help me mix it better! it's the first one in the player on the right side . . . http://www.songsbytom.com thanks, -Tom

Different sort of material – very original (Bruce Hornsby meets David Byrne?). Nice groove – bass and drums establish a relaxed yet bubbly pace. Piano sounds are really clean and clear – no over-playing, very tasteful. The strings drive the rhythm as well. The chord changes are what make this so good to listen to. There is one instrument that comes in around :51 – not sure what it is but I like it – the little melody works really well. Vocal treatment is unusual – melodyne? Simple, direct lyrics - almost childlike in a way. It works, whatever it is. It’s not Hey Jude, but I like it.

I cannot help mix it better it was fine as is. Or perhaps the bass was too loud. Probably not. The song was very nice IMO. Just about perfect pop song.

Very nice Tom! I really like the instrumentation you chose for this. My only crit would be that the vocals sound like they are coming from a tunnel. I'd like to hear them more up front (not louder, if you know what I mean). The bass is right in my head, along with the strings and the horn (duduk?), so the vocals just sound too separated from everything else. I'd say this song is well worth investing more time in... Regards, Dan

Really like this. I also think the vocals are sitting a little strange in the mix. Everything else seems great.

thanks a bunch for the ideas and comments! Manny - thanks much! That instrument at :51 is a sampled Kontakt version of an Armenian Duduk! It's one of my favorites, from Ilya Efimov. Thanks for the nice comments on the piano - if you want to hear some overplaying, just listen to any of my other tunes! :) and speaking of that, thanks for the "not Hey Jude" reference! Much obliged! Kakku - thanks, and the bass being loud is something I'm getting more paranoid about, because bass is probably my favorite tone in the pallette, and I apparently like it louder than most people. I'm going to go back and re-mix some of my posted songs specifically to bring the bass down to a level more people can appreciate. Thanks for the thoughts! Dan - thanks, and yes the vocals! As the vocals are the experiment here (for me) I'll say I was replicating a trick (or TRYING to replicate) the Steve Miller thing where he sings the line an octave apart and then blends it together. I'll try to bring it out of the tunnel before it collapses in on me! I very much respect your ears, so thanks for the heads up . . . Slumbermachine - thanks, I'll keep chipping away to make it even better! cheers, -Tom

Excellent Tom - I really like this - it is really free flowing and is totally unpredictable. Love the voice and ll of the ear candy. Mix-wise, my only crit would be that the main drums start off very narrow which is great to build tension but it would be great if they were set free around the middle of the song and opened up in the stereo field. Going back for another listen - great stuff.

Hi Tom. Very nice song indeed! It has a very laid back groove but has a tempo that really keeps it moving along. I don't have much to add to the above comments. Actually, you must have improved the bass I because I don't notice it as being intrusive. It is probably the cheap system that I listen on but to me the bass foot pedal (drums) sounded a bit strong compared to the rest of the percussion. However, as I said that is probably an artifact of my system. Excellent number and well done!

Daryl1968 - great idea on the drums, I'll open them up a bit. That's actually something I fail to attend to, it's easy to focus on melodic things and just have the drums kind of be there. Thanks for the idea. Freddy - many thanks, glad it's workin' for ya! cheers, -Tom

Very sweet sounding track Tom. Not my cuppa musical tea (a bit too Coldplay for me), but I appreciate the work that has gone into mixing and arranging this. Piano sounds beautiful, and reminded me of the 'Hill St Blues' theme towards the end

Cool! I think I will also take the suggestion of pulling back the lower vocal a bit, thanks Mark. Rimshot, thanks much! Hope it translates! Wookie, thanks and I hope this one got baked a "little" less hot? I intend to go back to some others and ratchet down the limiting a tad! JamesG, it's a good reference to Coldplay because like you, I'm not obsessed nor particularly impressed with them, but after writing this song, I could see them doing it, much much better of course, and at the Super Bowl! Ha Ha. And if anyone knows who Jon Hopkins is, he's one of my favorites and he has written all kinds of stuff for them. cheers, -Tom

Great tune, excellent pop and the chord changes and the vocal lines weaving through them are just great. Everything sounds pretty great to my ear, except that I agree with the comment about pushing the lower vocal back some to get some clarity with the main vocal. Great song!

Hey eSoul, very dynamic song. I like the way it changes around. It forces the listener to focus in. The french horn sounding thing is nice, and then the piano comes in, cool. Then it all kind of winds down, and the driving beat comes back in with the staccato strings, Well crafted song fella. Inspirational to me as to how to mix thing up a bit. A lesson in what is possible. Jesse Q. Screed

Vocal has a weird effect. Not sure it's really needed. Would love to hear the song with less of the FX. The drums seem a tad to high in the mix for this type of song (or maybe just too dry). All personal taste mind you.

Not much to add to the mix comments above - vocals and drums are mainly it for me. The song itself is really well done. The chord changes and melodies are very nice, and I like those repeated staccato string lines (Coldplay-ish). Overall I think it's different yet still familiar.

Hey emeraldsoul, I really liked the song, I'm digging the vibe. Some aspects are reminiscent of Coldplay, some of their less dramatic songs. The content of the lyrics definitely reinforces that feeling. My ear was kind of hoping for a more intense arc to the song, but that's just my conditioned expectations I suppose. Anyway, awesome job and keep it up. Amine

I had this on my desktop while doing some other stuff and went back to it several times. I finally hooked up my Boston Acoustic speakers complete with subwoofer, so I think I got a good representation of the music....actually listened to several of your other ones. I came away from it with the feeling that nothing sounded out of place to me. The music itself is really relaxing. Very creative mix. I think this is a good example of a musician who is good at musicianship AND good at mixing. You wove the mixing and the music together in a pro way that I would be hard pressed to pick out from a lineup of anything else similar out there being sold for profit. One personal thing that struck me was the lower vocals are not something I'm accustomed to hearing all alone. I didn't dislike it, it was just a difference.

A few fixes are in place, thanks to some great forum contributors! Starise - excellent, sir, glad you liked it, and thanks for the blog comments along the way! Much obliged - and keep it up, the world needs more deep thinkers! Amine - you sure nailed it, my feeling too is that this song lacks that "arc" , but it's more of a groove-out kind of tune. It just kind of flatlines, I guess! SteveC - many thanks, I think there's something to these chords, just kinda works for me, too - glad you like 'em. I know we all try to find that sweet-spot match between chords, melody, and rhythm! Shouldn't it be easier? :) Bapu - good call on the drums being too loud, I lowered the snare a fair amount but now that you called my attention to it, it still seems on the loud side? I dunno. Too close to it now to make the right call. Jesse - your songs are good examples of "making your own rules" as far as arrangement goes, and I totally respect that! Keep up your excellent work . . . KevinWal - yes good call on the vocal weirdness! Thanks for liking the song, it was fun to do . . . Beagle - Clearly you know a thing or two about this stuff, and thanks, I dropped the lower vocal to where it's barely audible. I wonder if I may have cut it too much? Thanks again for the comments . . . happy holidays to all of y'all! -Tom

Hey eSoul, I had to listen to this again. I wanted to focus on the lyrics. "We both watched the stars at night." Is that your lover you're talking about? "I'm blind without you anyway." Where did they go? I feel like that sometime too, when I'm away from the one I love. Maybe I'm reading to much into it. "I miss the shimmer and the glow, even the moonlight seems to know." I hadn't noticed the sax in there before, very realistic. "our hearts behold the stars at night." This is a great love song.

Hey Tom, very well done ...the arrangement is creative and keeps the listener's interest throughout. The vocals are also spot on but something about the reverb bugs me a bit -- just a bit though. Nothing else to critique -- very fine work...bravo.

Tom, I've always enjoyed your wide range of musical styles. The songwriting and performances are excellent. I like the way you panned all the elements of this mix to make it sound wide and large. Everything is crystal clear, yet warm, like an analog recording. I don't get as much time to hang out here on the forum as I used to, but when I can, I always listen to your latest tracks. Much obliged (as Festus would say . . .) GusRogers - thanks hombre. I'm fighting the vocals a bit on this tune, it seems. To be honest I'm not really hearing the "vocals coming out of a tunnel" effect, but as four or five of y'all have made the same comment, I know it must be there somewhere. Hey, actually, the vocals DID come out of a tunnel - my mouth is a tunnel! It's old, leaky, about to collapse. It's attached loosely to my brain, which is a Bridge to Nowhere. :) Jesse Q - thanks, yep it's about me wife. Ready? 1 . . . 2 . . . 3 . . . . "awwwwwwwww!" Now back to the music. :) ABull - many thanks, you certainly know a thing or two or three about songwriting! I'll eventually figure the vocals out. there is a very light doubled vocal track, 1 octave lower. It used to be completely audible, but I've tried to tuck it waaaay under the main vocal . Maybe it sets the reverb off - I'll check and see if both vocals are going to the same reverb. hmmmmm. Lynn - very kind compliments indeed, thanks very much. You are always very open with your praise, and I like your work, too. When you hear the Radiators, you will think you are singing for them. Maybe! Cool Bass line .... and keys! The percussion is nice, clear and appropriate. (That snare really snaps) The vocals are interesting. Not crazy about the eq'ing on the vocals in the middle but it does work. Lovely little keyboard runs!!!! Tastey and the violin works well. Great stuff! Kudos!
