Phone jacks

How many of you still use them?

I have to as part of my DSL service.  I don't think it's a technical requirement.

I haven't had a land line since 2005. Superficially, I regret getting rid of it because it was a prestigious 212 number which you can't get in Manhattan any more. Practically, I haven't missed it once.

Three phones on the landline. At least 75% of call are on the landline. We tend to only use the mobiles when out of the house.

I prefer the ergonomics of the house phone.

Centurylink/Centurytel is who I get internet and DSL with as well as SatTeeVee.  Dish kept the rates creeping up a bit at a time, so after 9 years I called CenturyLink to have Dish turned off.  They made me such a sweet 2 year, no contract deal on DirecTeeVee I'm giving it a go.  My total bill dropped $75/mo and is locked for the 2 years.

In 2 years I figure my virtual cord cutting options will be even better - but I'm liking DirecTV right now.  I already have NetFlix that I use primarily for my work-out time.  Exercise goes better for me with a A/V distraction.

I do like the regular, cordless handsets better than cell phones so I have 3 as long as I have the service anyway, plus one older corded TT handset for power outages.

They swear we'll get be getting Big City-like internet service next year when the fiber installation is completed.  They're claiming 20Mb down/10Mb up.  If I get half of that I'll be screamin' joy in comparison to the 3.8Mb down/.75Mb up service I have now.

Come to think of it, I do have a telephone here. It works, but I've never used it. Used to be a landline, later retained for a DSL connection. Nowadays it's plugged into my (FiOS) modem.

I should try it and see how well it works. It's gotta be better than my cell phone. Two cans and a string would be better than my cell phone, if they could take snapshots.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

Cable is no option here.  Maybe I'm further out in the boonies :)  I'm they're planning to constrain to minimize facility requirements.  I don't blame them.  I did a stint in wireless years ago that obviously req'd interface between cell sites and terrestrial facilities.  There are never enough facilities.

    Hi,

All jacks here. We even wired the apartment so you can get cable and internet in the main bedroom and small bedroom.

Trouble is we have "Fiber" internet. But the fibers go to a box a quater of a mile away. Its copper from there.

We have "up to" 38 mb/s but in reality get half that. Seems to be fine for everything but the Grandsons X-Box. Boy do they eat some bandwidth.

Land line is for fax. We get about 20 spam faxes a month and send about 5 a year. When I upgraded to FiOS with Verizon, they just let me keep the land line as a "bonus". It used to cost $40/mo along with $65/mo for 10/6 DSL.

FiOS cost me $95 for 75/75. Of course NI's site is still throttled at about 3.2. Sheesh.

I can't believe it's been 9 years already, but when we were building this house I wired Cat5e and 3G coax throughout the house.  At the point of presence from the telco, the DSL goes into the modem, then to a gigabit switch.  Everything inside goes to the switch to keep intranet traffic for NAS & peer-to-peer off of the modem.  The only exception is SWMBO's work machine that goes straight to the modem for it's VPN.

It's worked very well for almost a decade now ...

    Hi,

Comcast here in Vancouver, WA is almost $80 bux ... and there is no competition here, as Clear came and went, with their prairie patty kind of service.
