Seagate Hybrid Hard drive...

Hi there,
when I built my custom made PC, I bought a 2TB hybrid hard drive. One of those that has 8gigs built on SSD to the regular hard drive that has NCQ and SATA 6gbs speed, but I have run latency check tests and it seems the culprit of having real time audio issues with Sonar Platinum is due to this hard drive.
I thought this was suppose to be a super duper fast hard drive that can keep up with the OS and to do real time audio capabilities.
does anyone else use these and have issues too??
The hard drive is plugged into a 6Gbs sata port with the latest drivers and Intel drivers, but still no go...
the only thing short of me doing is buying a 1TB actual true SSD drive...
Thanks..

No one uses hybrid hard drives here for their DAW???

I was ignorant that there even was such a thing. I haven't built a computer in about 7 years. I guess it's time to brush up a little.

That's quite alright....these hard drives are suppose to bridge regular hard drives and true SSDs.....

I hope you get it sorted out. Sounds like it'll be a real scorcher once you get it figured out.

I have those seagate hybrids- 2 T same as you- no problems to report. I am using an intel sdd for the OS- the rest on the sshd. maybe the sata cable or a switch in bios- if you just installed and built it should be no fragmentation- what OS ?

IIRC, that 8GB is static data to accelerate the Windows boot process only, so once up and running those drives are essentially standard HDDs. 8GB is not much to begin with, and it is not intended as a cache.

ahhh....well...I'm running windows 10 pro and new install with all of the latest drivers and using it as the boot drive.....I have double checked the bios and even made sure that in the PCH settings, it was set for hybrid drive which is was, even experimented of turning it off with no results, just the same...turned it back on and cables are fine....
I mean it's fast and all, but when I actually start inserting Omnisphere and other synths into Sonar, the sound starts glitching and very static...

I do not own Omnisphere, does that stream samples? I am also not sure which hybrid you are running, and spindle speed/fragmentation of a drive can make access times noticeable. Tweaking disk I/O buffers can sometimes help, but an SSD is almost night/day for the purpose of "primarily reading data." That hybrid drive is most likely functioning as a "generic HDD" once it has been booted and online.

My SSD is very old now, and for fun I popped open the SONAR X1 reference manual (30MB) at work (both on the OS HDD)... took like 45 seconds to start Acrobat and load that file. After I installed my SSD at home, double clicking that file was less than half a second for the same test (although CPU was also superior). SSDs excel at getting data to the CPU, but they also have specific maintenance and "don't dos" associated with them. Windows and utilities have become smarter to recognize the disk is an SSD and act accordingly, but if you get one, please research this info.

Yes, omnisphere can stream samples, I even turned that feature off and let it load the whole sample, same thing...so yeah...I am definitely looking at getting an SSD in the near future to help with this.....
I am concerned though of the life of SSDs, they usually are only good for a year or two and then they start getting corrupted and bam...one has to buy a new one, unless someone else here has had longer life with their ssd's than what's been reported with them..

Actually the Samsung 850 pro has a 10 year warranty but is a little more costly as well. I have two 850 evo's that have been working flawlessly. One never knows the life span of any drive really. http://www.samsung.com/gl.../support/warranty.html

thanks for the info....that's good to know...
I have been researching a lot about SSDs and the reports and posts say that after a couple of thousand hours, the actual memory cells start getting corrupt and can't write anymore to those particular cells...this has been a known issue since SSDs first showed up a few years ago...

I too bought a Seagate hybrid, and have decided it does not offer anything good for an audio environment.  I use it for storage, backup, and little used programs.  SSDs are great for read speed, but you don't want anything trying to write to them many times a second ....

I am starting to realize that......definitely going to have to go with a true SSD drive:)

Now the "writes" are involved in the longer warranties.  There are probably some old WD 30GB IDE drives that haven't died yet.

that's good to know that most manufactures warranties are now including writes into their warranties....
