Sonar with Waves Tune - Anyone Using It?
I have used V-Vocal since it was released and and more or less happy with it. But I know its only a matter of time before it fades into the horizon on some future Sonar update. Plus I imagine the sound of Waves Tune might be better than V-Vocal. Waves has a sale on Waves Tune, and generally I like Waves plugs, but I thought the re-wire would really be difficult. I always figured that Sonar does not work with Waves Tune, or at least it would be misery. A scan of prior forum threads makes it sound like Waves Tune is not for Sonar. I have the Waves Tune Lite from a package deal, so I gave it a quick try, and it does not seem so difficult to get along with as a plug in re-wire. You need to insert a rewire (one time) into the project and scan the clip, but after that it seems intuitive and solid. I notice that Waves Tune can pickup the more quiet passages unlike V-Vocal and also does not seem to skip octaves on difficult notes like screams or falsettos. The Lite version cuts most editing features so I cant say much about that. I much prefer the presentation of V-Vocal that shows the actual note on the grid, as opposed to Melodyne or Tune, which shows a lane that the note should be centered in. It is really a pity that V-Vocal is not being developed and updated. It is simple and powerful. But the pitch correction technology cannot be up to date. If you are wondering why I don't use Melodyne, I of course have the entry level version that comes with X3 pro. I have tried it and every time I sign on to Melodyne I get angry. It just does not work for me. I have no temptation to upgrade and go deeper with Celemony. I admit ARA is really a good system but I just can't seem to use Melodyne's interface. All I really want to do is vocal pitch correction with a goal of realistic sounding vocals, not create harmony parts or make strange vocal effects or edit anything but single track vocals. Any thoughts? I only tested Waves Tune Lite for a short period, perhaps there is some deal killer I have not discovered.

I'm using Waves Tune. It works a bit different from some of the other vocal processors I have, but I still think it is good. I really haven't had a chance to exploit in earnest yet, but I plan too. No matter what you use, I always use the graphical portion of any pitch correction rather than using the automatic mode. The graphical side gives me a lot more control as well as being able to pick and choose what to correct. It takes much more time to do it this way, but it pays off. Regards

I just can't seem to enjoy Melodyne, like I mentioned in the original post. Celemony's vision of what is right and wrong is different than mine. I could give you the details but it would be just complaining. I don't think I am the only one who is not happy to use Melodyne.

Well OK Waves just got another $99 from me. I picked up the Waves Tune. Here is my preliminary mini review: The software functions in X3 and in Platinum. It is not as sweet as ARA, but it works. You have to insert the Waves ReWire device, once per project. Then you need to "scan" the clip, which means play it in real time. I have not been able to figure out the CPU load caused by Tune. The editing screen is very confining (small) by today's standards. If you click to go to full screen it does not enlarge the view. I hope Waves fixes this some day. The editing tools are just what you would expect if you like V-Vocal, only a little better. You can read the manual if you want, but you will not have to. It all makes sense. No endless staring at how-to videos. The main thing you will need to read in the manual is how to do the "scan" Waves Tune tracks very well. In V-Vocal quiet passages were not tracked, and gritty voices would not work well in V-Vocal. In Tune, it seems to track just about anything. No octave skips. It is nowhere near as fun to use Tune for quick analysis as V-Vocal. With V-Vocal, I could practice singing and easily look to see how accurate I was. In Tune, it is a production because of the Re-Wire/scan necessity. I recommend V-Vocal strongly for vocal practice. Back to Tune, I admit it is kind of long-legged to use with Sonar. But it does work. Probably frustrating for quick short clips. I plan to use Tune for final vocal editing. After I have done all of the Take Lane editing. I figure I will copy the vocal track to preserve the original, then merge to one clip. Then do the Waves Tune. I tried to exit Sonar and then come back. It seems like the Waves Tune editor will remember the last session, so you can come back later and modify. Like opening the V-Vocal editor on a previously edited clip. But I don't see any way to un-do Waves Tune once you end a session (there seems to be no way to just go back to the un-edited take once you save and exit). Sound wise I think it is a big step up from V-Vocal if what you want is natural sounding but in-tune vocals. This is the main reason I purchased. For reference, I am a passable singer, I have arrived at the level where I am usually pretty close to the target note. But singing is always a struggle. Especially fast soulful passages. One of the problems I see is that now I am more or less married to Waves Tune. Once a project has a track with Waves Tune, it is forever, unless you bounce the Waves Tune track to a clip. I hope Cakewalk continues to support Re-Wire. That's my report. Suerte.

I agree with all your observations, I had Tune LT, and based on the comments, picked up the main version. Yes the manual is cryptic, the gui terribly small, but it sure does work well. I have Melodyne, and AutoTune Evo and this seems to be the simplest of the three. Oh BTW I paid 84 USD for mine, its on sale at the usual discounters..but JRR still lists it for $400.

Waves TuneLT is included the Waves Gold bundle (which I recently purchased on sale). I struggled with it until I watched a video on Waves website. They show it being routed to an aux track. I did the same in Sonar thanks to our new track routing options, and everything worked great. I think it works well enough to finally let go of the V-Vocal plugin. If the full Waves Tune comes up for sale again, I will likely upgrade. I also spent some much needed time with Melodyne, and feel much more comfortable with it. I find I am much happier with it if I disable the "snap to pitch" options, since Melodyne sometimes makes questionable decisions about what notes are actually in tune. Melodyne's interface could use some work, but it can do everything and more.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but shouldn't you just be using the VST version of Waves Tune as opposed to the Rewire version? That way you can just bypass/delete the VST if you want to revert to the original.
By the way, I only have Tune LT, but it seems awfully similar in operation to Melodyne, just less modern (tiny GUI, no ARA). I know you seem set on this course, but I would really urge you to consider Melodyne again and perhaps share some of the problems you've been having with it.

The problem with Melodyne is that Melodyne Essentials (which is what ships with X3 Producer) does not include the pitch drift tool that lets you flatten pitch drift within a blob or change the angle, it just lets you choose the amount of drift (0 - 100%) - you need to buy the more expensive version to get that feature. That is why I continue to use V-Vocal -- it provides complete control over pitch.

What was the answer to this, please? Can Waves Tune be used in SONAR Platinum as a VST3 plugin? The Waves list of supported DAWs does not include SONAR.

It does not work fully. Waves lists those hosts that work. I tried a couple of years ago - and you can get Tune to scan. If Waves rewire was loaded on a track - message that no connection disappeared - but it does not really work. I could position of a few places - edit - and then render and it worked. But you usually want to listen through a passage in a loop over and over and listen to what you did - that does not work. And something with position on timeline clicking from Tune(I think it was) did nothing - so navigating is a pain. It's not really usable in Sonar - at the time two/three years ago when I tried. Otherwise I use Tune for many things. Convert audio to midi - so I get notation in a smooth way later etc. If doing on bass line, I used Waves Ultrapitch to transpose audio one octave and could do midi from that too with Tune.
